@Morgy09 "Listen" was definitely written for the movie. It was *not* in the original production. In fact, Beyonce was nominated for an Oscar for it (she co-wrote it) and they only nominate song written originally for a movie. However, this version is very different than the movie. Instead of being Deena's breakaway song, it is about Deena and Effie's reconciliation after many years apart. It's so much more effective and emotional than the movie version!
@ferosha99 You are absolutely correct Ferosha! "Listen" was originally co-written by Beyonce for the film and brilliantly modified for this latest stage revival. Beyonce performed "Listen" as a solo in the movie, but she and Jennifer Hudson sang the song as a duet as part of a Dreamgirls medley at the Oscars.
@ferosha99 Yes, "Listen" was written for the movie, but Beyonce was not nominated for an Oscar for writing the song. There is a limited number of writers that can be accredited for writing nominations. Being that there were too many writers accredited she was nominated because they decided that she did the least amount of writing, so she was not nominated. But she was nominated for the Golden Globe.
why are they singing songs from the film and why are the costumes from the film ugh i hate when the production team takes the easy way out and follow the movie i am very against this new production
"Listen" is among several songs added for the film, including "Love You I Do," "Patience" and "Perfect World." "Listen" however was the only song included to the new onstage production of dreamgirls. The 4 songs mentioned was never part of the original Broadway play which one of the original cast then was Jeniffer Holiday.
I feel like you guys are misinformed. These are the original lyrics to the Broadway play. The movie screenplay was adapted for film. The Listen Beyonce sings is the edited and amended version.
I don't think this is as good as the original lyrics used in the film. The phrasing is awkward and doesn't serve the music as well as the sincere ones used in the film.
I went to school with syesha, And im so honored to say that because she is an amazing person, SO funny and obviously talented and deserving of all she has.
And anyone who knows anything about the play would know that Deena wasn't the "power house" Effie was. Hence the fact that at the beginning of the play Effie was lead, not Deena.
The play was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! Why can't we just support these young ladies that are actually fulfilling their dreams unlike most of us criticizing them!!!! I went to college with Moya and she was power then and still is!!!! Famous people have studios to fix flaws in their voices; this is just flat out RAW TALENT!!!!
No body sounds like Beyonce on this video. I don't hear what you folks hear. Thanks WonderGirl732 for pointing out to everyone that this Listen is a revision. Why compare these ladies to Beyonce and Jennifer? In order to do a real comparison, they would have to sing the same song and the same words. Effie in the movie didn't sing Listen and as WonderGirl732 said this is revised. The words are different.
I just went to this show in Chicago... I was impressed with everyone, it was my first broadway show! Moya really knocked it out of the park though! She was the only one who received a standing O. Her "And I'm Telling You" was truly remarkable singing/performing! Excellent woman.
@sxcjoe18 I really disagree with you. This is a totally different Listen than the once Beyonce sang in the movie version. This one Deena is apologizing to Effie in the one on the movie it is Deena singing to Curtis.
Moya Angela`s a very good friend of mine & I want everyone to know she`s gonna be a STAR!!!!! She`s also a very nice girl. I would also like say it think the world of Syesha as well...
I love it!!!!

shes meant to, Effie is meant to be a better singer, which is why she doesnt like it when Deena is made lead singer.

I saw this in pittsburgh. Moya rocked the house! Syesha was VERY disappointing. The girl that played Lorell was the best in the show by FAR.
