There is an interesting thing to this too. The pipa came to Japan during the T'ang Dynasty. At that time in China, the pipa was played with a plectrum, but this survives in Japan nowadays. The modern Chinese Pipa uses the fingers now and is said to be based off the techniques of the Guqin. If you take a look at art from around the T'ang era in China, you will see people playing the Pipa similar to hos this lady is playing it in the video (with the plectrum and such).
