@Ebajpai I could only give you figures from Oz, which is $899 for the 64GB version. Office is not available on this but you'll find most functions are duplicated on Polaris Office.
Why the older prime didn't do that?Or android needed a powerfully hardware to show it's serious face?Sorry but a light linux didtribution like android should handle better my tegra 2 lg 2x.hardware's software is the 50% of the final result and since Windows 8 will give right support for many choices like cheap AMD Trinity APU tabs with crisis gaming or official promise for X86 app support for arm tabs, make W8 a 100 euros worth of buying instead of expensive marketing apple like products.
@vaghoust In this financial climate, value for money is important, but so is ease of use, functionality and styling. Products will end up at the level that the market can bear, and we're also looking forward to seeing what Windows 8 models do eventuate.
@RitchiesRoomTV ive only used it on my android phone to mostly edit documents as well, but have been able to do a little more on it with power points that i haven't found any other program can .
@darknight11ish At the end of the day, these apps are all trying to emulate the benchmark productivity suite, and can only get close to what we normally use on our desktops. They are not bad for casual document creation.
@aasdsasddasd No, unfortunately not - Android currently does not support the drivers, and vice versa, for Dongle-based 3G modems. It's either embedded 3G or tethering to a smartphone.
@jcyber777 At this stage you can't as it isn't available. Polaris seem to be doing OEM deals, which means they are licensing the software to tablet manufacturers to be pre-loaded, which guarantees income based on tablets sold. I'm sure they'd be looking at the greater Android tablet market and planning on a wider distribution though.
@todayiamglad When you set it up for first time use, there are options to choose other languages. I haven't done that but will find if Cryllic is indeed supported.
@TheShingiskhan thanks for the feedback, yes it probably would have been better to write and format an entire document but for time's sake we wanted to show the basics of what was being asked, which was to write a document then email it to someone.
@dimmddr1 You have one too? Mine is gathering dust. I have seen some emulator apps being mentioned but they would be Android in general, not specifically Prime.
@deyu888 Totally different propositions, this is a touch screen detachable tablet running a very different OS. Macbook Air would be compared more to Ultrabooks than tablet products. For everyday computing the Macbook Air is still a strong alternative in style and spec.
@deyu888 The folder and file system is much more open that the iOS environment, so it's easier to drag and drop and move files around. Although iOS is still a very reliable and robust system, Android 4 and the Prime combined are a strong contender. Plus the keyboard kinda seals the deal for productivity.
It looks like there is a small delay when typing is that just the camera or is there realy a delay ? My galaxy tab 10.1 does have that to and it is disturbing me.
@Themakrala As mentioned below, there might have been a delay but I didn't notice is as distracting. But we'll go through it again with our second Q & A round.
@Mohaamadq We'll be getting a new unit as soon as we return from the CES in Vegas, so we'll be answering these kinds of questions then. Being Flash, I would imagine it should be able to handle flash in browser games. The big question is control - would you use touchscreen or the keyboard dock? We'll look into it.
I've tried using the Polaris Office through the older version; Transformer, it seems as though features such as 'ctrl a', highlighting with 'ctrl+shift+up' or 'shift + up' so on, doesn't work on Polaris yet I've read on a forum that those button works on 'most' app, ironically, not on Polaris Office which is a app that most users will prob use when it comes to typing.
@Briiannn1 If you come over to the Ritchie's Room site and check out the comments area on the Prime articles you'll find a few people that now own the Prime. Given we had to return the unit and are still waiting for it back, you would probably get a pretty quick answer from one of our readers there. Just look for the article called "question and answer time for the Asus Transformer Prime".
@zachsmacapps Short answer is no. I'd be using the Prime as a secondary device for use in the field and away from the desk/home. Ultrabooks might be a more realistic replacement for older laptops.
Hey, thank you a lot for this video. I am waiting for my transformer, checking amazon every day.
Can you tell if the feedback from the dock is as direct and swift as on a notebook? I have the impression that the key detection was slightly laggy in the video, when using the polaris office. Am I right about this one?
@trollhammar we didn't notice any lag and if there was it would be more a Polaris software issue because it tries to workout the word you're typing, so that slows it down a little. On Google Docs it was fairly instant.
Thanks for the info :) I really can't wait to get one of those. Unfortunately Germans is not blessed with taiwanese hightech as much as America is atm.
@PimLansingerland Now days lots of mobile phones and most smart-phones allow you to turn your phone into a WiFi hot spot and in turn connect the prime. This is one of the reasons we feel USB wireless internet is almost redundant now days. Checkout our YouTube Channel we have a couple of videos where we create Hot Spots on an Android and iPhone smartphone and then connected a Galaxy Tab 7.7 to the internet via the Hot Spot created. It will also work for the Prime, so take a look.
How will Prime/Android 3.2 handle google docs editing?
How is the experince with an external mouse, e.g. a bluetooth mouse?
Do you have any recommondation for cases/sleeves? Dunno if I wanna get the Transleeve, or just a cheap neopren case. Im going to use the tablet both with and without the dock. Transleeve doesnt work together with the dock...? and a normal neopren case dosent protect the tablet itself.. this is the best solution I've found on the web.
@kunddizzles We use Google Docs because of its portability and it worked like a dream. The mouse we used was a Logitech USB wireless mouse and it worked perfectly...just like a normal mouse would on a desktop.
Hello. First and foremost, thank you so much for the incredible feedback you've given by answering everybody's questions.
I am sorely tempted to get this beauty for my medicine studies. I have heard wonderful things when it comes to customisation and the Android OS, but was a little disappointed that you could not have Windows OS on the Transformer Prime. To your knowledge, would you be able to install a custom OS (such as Windows) on this machine in the future, or is it "stuck" with Android?
@Selxis You can only have an Android on this tablet. I am wondering if there are some custom roms with superuser and if yes, how fast is screen capture software?
@krzysiekmie We didn't try screen capture, we should next time we have one. We haven't delved into custom roms but there is plenty of discussion on the XDA forums - perhaps look up for the original Transformer.
Hello! I'm a student and I'm buying this tablet soon but I'd like to know how would it work to take class notes. Is it fluid or does it jams when you type quite fast? Thankyou for the videos.
@Michudejaimichu We didn't touch type, but we did type fairly fast. We didn't notice any lag or delay when we were inputing lots of text via the keyboard.
@chingalinga808 I bought a leather folio case for the 1st Transformer. I'm hoping the new one is so thin that both the tablet and keyboard will fit. Also, It shipped! Today! Overnight!
@chingalinga808 On a hardware base, absolutely. From an apps base, that is very much a market driven issue. But, with 10 billion app downloads, the Android Market is definitely maturing into a real contender.
Thinking of having this be my laptop. Think it's enough for basic college classes and computing? or should i just buy a 15.6 inch pos for $500? let me know what you think.Would buy a zenbook but don't have the funds.
@Stereodeliparts I'm still a firm believer that tablets, even with keyboards, can't yet replace your main PC, these are more of a secondary device. I think you'd have to look at your full set of needs and functionality. For a main PC, the keyboard and memory are a little small, for example.
@daknappkin There are two colours - “amethyst gray” and “champagne gold.” We've only seen the gray in person and it looked great, a bit on the industrial cool tech side. We haven't seen the gold yet but we'll give our impressions if we do end up seeing it.
@Totorosushi We've been asked this a few times, and it never tilted so far as to fall backwards. The dock is a little lighter than the tablet but not to the extent that there is a severe imbalance. It might tilt if you have the tablet extended all the way down, but that's probably not practical anyway.
@angellaverda You can download files from the internet and save them on your local directory in almost the same fashion as a desktop platform, so music, being just a file for all intents and purposes should work just like any other file.
@RitchiesRoomTV hello. I have a question. How does the speaker sound on the transformer prime? How does it sound when holding the tablet with both hands? How loud? And if capable how well do they compare to the original transformers? (Tf101l
@JC5301 Not sure what the original Transformer sounded like in comparison as it's been a while since we played with that one, but the one speaker vent has stereo output. It is quite loud and defined, and the shape of your hand when holding the Prime actually changes the sound. It's something you'll definitely have to try in a store when they arrive.
Great video's mate. I am almost convinced to get this one. But one thing i need to know: can i goto this site and can it work with live chess? (and similar sites)
@Bredadarts I've tried that chess site with other Android tablets and it works just fine, you touch the piece you want to move then select the square by touching the destination square. I imagine it should also work on the Prime.
I saw your responce, but i mean to say that there, on Android Market, and some others, after surching, i dont find anything capable of some extreme editing... most are not considered extreme , but for a tablet... so is there something on ths 5-cores tablet to do that. i.e. is polaris office or something else is capable of doing it?
@Rohanmishra26 I'm not sure how "extreme" you need it to be, but for me the purpose of the Prime is to compliment your PC, not replace it. It's definitely progressing to a strong gaming alternative, and the keyboard definitely provides the functionality for improved productivity. I think that as more high-powered tablets are released developers will offer those powerful editors that you are looking for, as they need a reasonable installed base to get a return on their investment. Thanks again!
@CoxWouter We're currently collating all the requests and we'll try to cover as many functions as possible in the next round of videos featuring the Prime.
@RitchiesRoomTV Thanks, I really like how you are doing in-depth and hands-on review, instead of all of the reviews saying "Prime has this display, and that processor, and ...".
I do understand that you won't be able to fulfill all requests. So I'll just keep an eye out for your new videos.
@MuNii4 Release date is still not firm and many pre-orders have closed. If you Google pre-orders for the Prime you'll find lots of places like Amazon but it looks like orders are closed in many places due to the high demand.
@hongphucbui88 There will be a USB adapter available that will connect where the dock normally connects. However, only pen drives are readable, not HDD because it can't power the drive.
@Rohanmishra26 We'll do some productivity examples using the pre-loaded Polaris Office when we next have the unit in our hands - make sure to subscribe to stay up to date on all our Prime videos.
sure you can e-mail something you wrote on it, but you need a full-on desktop version of office to get that perfect final copy with headers page numbers sources and fonts.
with that aside, i would get this for everything else.
@bmw2go11 You're right, what we did was fairly basic and we didn't try to dress it up or format it in any meaningful way. That is a good topic - how far can you emulate desktop productivity tasks on a tablet with a keyboard. Keep an eye out for more on this, thanks for the note!
@Micklol With Windows 8 at very early stages, I'd say no for now. The main thing to watch for will be Android 4.0 - this is kind of hardware power, we are keen to see what the new platform update is capable of. Expect a full review of that in the near future, so subscribe if you're interested. Hopefully we'll even have some early Windows 8 tablets to show off to you as well :-)
@babopoper we didn't test that. But yes we use DocsToGo on an ipad and do that all the time. Can't see why that wouldn't work with Polaris and if it didn't there always something in the Android Marketplace you could use instead. I'm pretty sure it does though because thats the whole point of Polaris.
@realeasysuccess yes we are however the addresses do not include the name but an ID number only.
plus.google.com/b/115982317613322833644/
Bare with us on that one we haven't really got that up and running as yet but definitely put us in your circles and we'll get that up to speed soon too.
This might sound like a silly question, but can you type on this tablet without the dock extension? For example, can I write documents and send them without the keyboard dock?
@Kimyumoto16 I don't have it here anymore, when we get it back I can check that. I'd be surprised if it doesn't. However we do all our docs on Google Docs and that definitely has spell check.
I have also a question regarding the 3g capability on this tablet, i know that it doesn't have an internal 3g modem, but would it work with a specific external 3g usb dongle?!
@xandrosdesanto A few people have asked this. Personally I don't think you can because I haven't seen a Android specific one out there yet. But we have some here that we'll give a go when we get it back and see what happens.
@capudera Funny thing is we're all electronics geeks here in RitchiesRoom but none of us knows how to type correctly. Will ask someone who does know what they think when we get it back. For us it seemed ok. Be sure to subscribe so to get the follow up videos.
would this make a good laptop replacement for a college student? does it do the things a laptop does well? would you recommend it to a college student? i want a laptop replacement as well as a tablet to take around.
@saaddaahmed Yes we think it is. Highly portable and the Android Marketplace has a plethora of productivity apps for students ro take advantage of. The only thing you would need to confirm is that you/they don't need a specific program loaded that is not available in the Android marketplace. So always check that first.
Hey, I'm really wondering about this: Can you transfer pictures from a USB or SD card straight into cloud storage or (using USB hub) to another external device (like an external hard drive or other USB) WITHOUT first copying it onto the tablet? Or can you even view it without having to copy it? One of my worst problems with the ipad 2 is that you have to have the pictures ON the device in order to view it or transfer it! I'd love to hear a response about this!
@sterlingsilvermist We were able to view files off the USB and SD cards no problem and save to can't see why we couldn't transfer from to the cloud either. Will check when we get it back (sometime next week).
Can i store the presentation files and document files in a pendrive or something else to be opened on Microsoft in my other windows laptop?

@chingalinga808 On a hardware base, absolutely. From an apps base, that is very much a market driven issue. But, with 10 billion app downloads, the Android Market is definitely maturing into a real contender.

Thinking of having this be my laptop. Think it's enough for basic college classes and computing? or should i just buy a 15.6 inch pos for $500? let me know what you think.Would buy a zenbook but don't have the funds.
Stereodeliparts 2 months ago
@Stereodeliparts I'm still a firm believer that tablets, even with keyboards, can't yet replace your main PC, these are more of a secondary device. I think you'd have to look at your full set of needs and functionality. For a main PC, the keyboard and memory are a little small, for example.

Are these the same steps as the tf101 to create and send an email?
slimey93 2 months ago
@slimey93 Transformer One came with basically the same platform and Polaris app, so the steps should be identical.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago
@daknappkin There are two colours - “amethyst gray” and “champagne gold.” We've only seen the gray in person and it looked great, a bit on the industrial cool tech side. We haven't seen the gold yet but we'll give our impressions if we do end up seeing it.

Did you find that the unit with the keydock to be overly top heavy? Did it tip over easily?
Thanks and great video!
Totorosushi 2 months ago
@Totorosushi We've been asked this a few times, and it never tilted so far as to fall backwards. The dock is a little lighter than the tablet but not to the extent that there is a severe imbalance. It might tilt if you have the tablet extended all the way down, but that's probably not practical anyway.
Thanks for your kind words too!

@RitchiesRoomTV Thank you sir!

How is polaris office? Can you do things that Microsoft word can do such as line spacing, different fonts, alignments, etc?
SUP3RM3TROID 2 months ago
@SUP3RM3TROID We didn't try it to that extent but will keep that in mind for the next time we have one in our hands. Thanks for the suggestion.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago
is this able to run ms office ?
77youdoc 2 months ago
@77youdoc Not MS Office, but there is a suite called Polaris Office that comes pre-loaded that is compatible with Office documents.

Can you download music from a site right from the prime ?
angellaverda 2 months ago
@angellaverda You can download files from the internet and save them on your local directory in almost the same fashion as a desktop platform, so music, being just a file for all intents and purposes should work just like any other file.

@RitchiesRoomTV hello. I have a question. How does the speaker sound on the transformer prime? How does it sound when holding the tablet with both hands? How loud? And if capable how well do they compare to the original transformers? (Tf101l
JC5301 2 months ago
@JC5301 Not sure what the original Transformer sounded like in comparison as it's been a while since we played with that one, but the one speaker vent has stereo output. It is quite loud and defined, and the shape of your hand when holding the Prime actually changes the sound. It's something you'll definitely have to try in a store when they arrive.

Great video's mate. I am almost convinced to get this one. But one thing i need to know: can i goto this site and can it work with live chess? (and similar sites)
wwwDOTchessDOTcom
i hope you can check this, ;-)
cheers
Bredadarts 2 months ago in playlist More videos from RitchiesRoomTV
@Bredadarts I've tried that chess site with other Android tablets and it works just fine, you touch the piece you want to move then select the square by touching the destination square. I imagine it should also work on the Prime.

Thanks alot man, youtube needs more active reviewers with answering questions.
Great and keep up the good work.

Rohanmishra26 2 months ago
@Rohanmishra26 I'm not sure how "extreme" you need it to be, but for me the purpose of the Prime is to compliment your PC, not replace it. It's definitely progressing to a strong gaming alternative, and the keyboard definitely provides the functionality for improved productivity. I think that as more high-powered tablets are released developers will offer those powerful editors that you are looking for, as they need a reasonable installed base to get a return on their investment. Thanks again!

Can you test how well Adobe Photoshop Touch works on this?
Perhaps with a demo version?
CoxWouter 2 months ago
As well as Adobe Proto.
I'm a webmaster, those tools on a tabled would be enormously useful. But I'm interested in the performance on the Prime.
CoxWouter 2 months ago
@CoxWouter We're currently collating all the requests and we'll try to cover as many functions as possible in the next round of videos featuring the Prime.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago
@RitchiesRoomTV Thanks, I really like how you are doing in-depth and hands-on review, instead of all of the reviews saying "Prime has this display, and that processor, and ...".
I do understand that you won't be able to fulfill all requests. So I'll just keep an eye out for your new videos.
CoxWouter 2 months ago
where can I order this and the release date?
MuNii4 2 months ago
@MuNii4 Release date is still not firm and many pre-orders have closed. If you Google pre-orders for the Prime you'll find lots of places like Amazon but it looks like orders are closed in many places due to the high demand.

how can I connect this prime to a vga-monitor?
hongphucbui88 2 months ago
@hongphucbui88 you could get a converter from hdmi to vga... but why vga? The picture wouldnt look as nice :\ Upgrade your monitor! :D
jxcxtxl 2 months ago
@jxcxtxl My bad, I mean Projector. Just in case we must do a presentation.
by the way is that possible to connect the Prime to a usb without a dock? Use a converter?
hongphucbui88 2 months ago
@hongphucbui88 The prime does not have a USB port on it, so no. youll have to buy the dock if you want USB
jxcxtxl 2 months ago
@jxcxtxl Thanks, so there is no way to connect my HDD to prime? I thought I could, to watch movies
hongphucbui88 2 months ago
@hongphucbui88 There will be a USB adapter available that will connect where the dock normally connects. However, only pen drives are readable, not HDD because it can't power the drive.

Can you print a document ? And pictures ?
With an USB printer ? On a local network ? With Google Cloud Print ?
qallincha 2 months ago
@qallincha Haven't tried printing at all. Never actually done that on an Android tablet yet, so this will be a good test when we get it back.

I was wondering if you could make a video showing the Transformer Prime running an app like gotomypc or logmein ignition while hooked up to the dock.

@pixelpopphotos We'll look at a remote desktop app when we get the unit back, good idea!

Rohanmishra26 2 months ago
@Rohanmishra26 We'll do some productivity examples using the pre-loaded Polaris Office when we next have the unit in our hands - make sure to subscribe to stay up to date on all our Prime videos.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago
what sucks about this is correct formatting.
sure you can e-mail something you wrote on it, but you need a full-on desktop version of office to get that perfect final copy with headers page numbers sources and fonts.
with that aside, i would get this for everything else.
bmw2go11 2 months ago
@bmw2go11 You're right, what we did was fairly basic and we didn't try to dress it up or format it in any meaningful way. That is a good topic - how far can you emulate desktop productivity tasks on a tablet with a keyboard. Keep an eye out for more on this, thanks for the note!
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago 2
@bmw2go11 Well, couldn't you do this with the full web version of Google Docs?
deejaylobo 2 months ago
any chance you might load windows 8 on this?
Micklol 2 months ago
@Micklol With Windows 8 at very early stages, I'd say no for now. The main thing to watch for will be Android 4.0 - this is kind of hardware power, we are keen to see what the new platform update is capable of. Expect a full review of that in the near future, so subscribe if you're interested. Hopefully we'll even have some early Windows 8 tablets to show off to you as well :-)

Hey Ritchie, me again, another question, if I put or download Microsoft Word or Power point doc into the tablet, can I open them in Polaris Office?
babopoper 2 months ago
@babopoper we didn't test that. But yes we use DocsToGo on an ipad and do that all the time. Can't see why that wouldn't work with Polaris and if it didn't there always something in the Android Marketplace you could use instead. I'm pretty sure it does though because thats the whole point of Polaris.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago

This might sound like a silly question, but can you type on this tablet without the dock extension? For example, can I write documents and send them without the keyboard dock?

@ashhhjx of course you can, like any other android device
plgenereux 2 months ago
@ashhhjx Most likely yes; the keyboard dock is probably just for convenience.

Does Polaris Office come with Spell check??? That's the only thing that's kept me from choosing this over a regular laptop.
Kimyumoto16 2 months ago
@Kimyumoto16 I don't have it here anymore, when we get it back I can check that. I'd be surprised if it doesn't. However we do all our docs on Google Docs and that definitely has spell check.

Great review, loved it.
I have also a question regarding the 3g capability on this tablet, i know that it doesn't have an internal 3g modem, but would it work with a specific external 3g usb dongle?!
Thanks,
xandrosdesanto 2 months ago
@xandrosdesanto A few people have asked this. Personally I don't think you can because I haven't seen a Android specific one out there yet. But we have some here that we'll give a go when we get it back and see what happens.

@capudera Funny thing is we're all electronics geeks here in RitchiesRoom but none of us knows how to type correctly. Will ask someone who does know what they think when we get it back. For us it seemed ok. Be sure to subscribe so to get the follow up videos.

would this make a good laptop replacement for a college student? does it do the things a laptop does well? would you recommend it to a college student? i want a laptop replacement as well as a tablet to take around.
saaddaahmed 2 months ago
@saaddaahmed Yes we think it is. Highly portable and the Android Marketplace has a plethora of productivity apps for students ro take advantage of. The only thing you would need to confirm is that you/they don't need a specific program loaded that is not available in the Android marketplace. So always check that first.
RitchiesRoomTV 2 months ago
Hey, I'm really wondering about this: Can you transfer pictures from a USB or SD card straight into cloud storage or (using USB hub) to another external device (like an external hard drive or other USB) WITHOUT first copying it onto the tablet? Or can you even view it without having to copy it? One of my worst problems with the ipad 2 is that you have to have the pictures ON the device in order to view it or transfer it! I'd love to hear a response about this!
sterlingsilvermist 2 months ago
@sterlingsilvermist We were able to view files off the USB and SD cards no problem and save to can't see why we couldn't transfer from to the cloud either. Will check when we get it back (sometime next week).
