Okay, I have to be a nerd and make a comment on Valkris' death scene at the beginning. The scene, I feel, is supposed to give us insight into the Klingon's culture which is later expanded on in the other movies. For Klingons, honor is vital and the only way to truly achieve it is to die nobly. Valkris, the Klingon woman, understands that her death is necessary because she viewed the Genesis info and she welcomes it because she will achieve the highest honor in her society by doing so.

Death is not treated as something to be feared, but instead welcomed so long as one does it nobly. To plead for one's life is to show weakness and frailty and have one's memory shamed.

Because the Genesis device brings dead planets to life, it brings dead Spock's body back to life too. At first, Kirk doesn't know Spock's body is there but figures it out and goes to investigate.
