Great memories I finished 6th in this race! Somebody else on the Mark Salle YT tribute page thinks I was killed racing and this is the reply I left to somebody called Ian who used to race:
Thankfully I am still alive although I did have a serious accident at Donnington's Craner Curves in the CBR 600 Challenge in 1987. I finished 2nd to Geoff Johnson in the VFormula 500 Cup final standings and won 2 rounds at Oulton Park and at Donnington (2nd race) but neither were televised :-( Mark Kilner
I have one of these with 56k on it which has given me three trouble free summers.
The analysis of "getting the best" from the VF500 by getting a smooth fast line is spot on because with 70 bhp from a middleweight there is enough in hand to get you into big trouble if you overcook it (as the tank slapper shows)!
First time I made a similar mistake I was lucky not to go down, fortunately only my pride was injured as I time to back off... and get overtaken GaH!
Best race ive ever seen. The Le Mans start rocks, and the crash was very intense, too bad he lost his first place :( Seemed like the front fork broke under the hard pressure?
@InstantChicken No, it looks like a tank slapper; when the bars twitch back and forth slightly and then it builds more intense until you lose control. Thats why modern bikes have steering dampers. Anyway, This is a GREAT video and I cant wait to get my '86 500 out to a track day.

Ack - is there a part 2?? Who won?
Fun race. That backstretch was really bumpy - you could see the guy's rear suspension bouncing right before he lost it.
Announcer gets props, too - every bike the same color, all with the same (really aerodynamic) number boards, and he never missed a beat.
