I have a similar engine but you started it in gear, it would of started alot easier if it was in neutral with lowish revs and choke on in cold

could you tell me where you got the gasket to that motor from??? I have a similair model and im dying to fix this gasket but i dont see any online.

it is troo a 1971 Merc 500 Merc outboards had red trim from 1968 to 1971

that is not a 71 it is a 1965 mer and u will not get water coming out from the hose that motor needs to be in a tank of water it sucks water from the bottom of motor and u will out get a lot of water coming out of the water hole at idl it will snow moroe water at higher rpm and mix that motor 50.1 u will burn up the head thay run hot i have 64 50hp mer and my motor runs great nice motor

nice merc, check your water pump and the waterpump outlet. a steady stream should be running out. what, no electric start ? but sounds good after sitting for 3 years
