I find sickening how the US media has to make propaganda and sensationalism out of events like this to justify the troops there, because they are simply "savages" who cannot rule themselves, and this is exactly what it causes: racism, prejudice, bigotry.

Perhaps I did misunderstand, but Thomas Jefferson is long dead, and also had a long standing affair with Sally Hemmings, a slave-woman with whom he fathered several children, what ever he said about the Haitians is hypocritical, and you're right, colonialism is one root cause as is the government there. They didn't do too much for its people, even before this disaster. So they run and hide like the cowards they are. Its not a racial war anymore, its a war between classes.

The haiti embargos and the century-long debt Haiti had to pay, colonialism, the coups, the rice politics of Clinton, the maquilas and Disney, and so many factors had already decided that Haitians are the "weak". I don't think things can be blamed on a whole population when there are despotic, dictatorial regimes backed up by US military forces. There is no chance Haitians can rule themselves.

Haitians have little experiences and knowledge of the world and you have expressed quite well the reason why, which is not because they are supernaturally evil and ignorant, but falling in a paradox, you admit that it is because of colonialism and neocolonialism.

Any government wants the masses to remain poor and as ignorant as possible, but when there are successful movements to counter this, there are laws to prevent despotism and fascism.
