How to change gear knob Golf 4

You need the gear knob with a long neck to fit it on golf IV kind of gear stick. Not the "short gear knobs"

Hey, when i took the cover off there is plastic casing around the the actually stick, and this gets in the way of the new gear knob i bought. It says its the right knob but im having trouble fitting it.

Do you need to put a new brass ring on under the clip when refitting after you've cut it off?
