I've been lonely my whole life, even in my last relationship. When you've had nothing but pain as far back as you can remember, it's hard not to be. Being raised by a raging alcoholic, and having many friends and family members die in freakish accidents might have something to do with it. Beautiful song, no doubt.

@polosolo2007 This song was written as a response to Roy Orbison's "Only The Lonely". It has the same chords and it's awesome. It also came out at the time of my divorce in 79.

Thanks helen1434 for your comment and your love. I was the lucky one who had Cindy from 1979 to 1982. She came back to see me in 1992, then she left. Then Dec 28th, 2002, Cindy died at the age of 46 of AIDS. Now I'm the one who"ll be calling out her name, When I"m Only Lonely.

I used to have the 45 on the COLUMBIA label. I also used to sing this to my late girlfriend Cindy in 1980 whenever I was on the road away from home. I called her on the phone and say to Cindy " When the world is ready to fall on your little shoulders, And when you"re feelin lonely and small, you need somebody there to hold you. You can call out my name, When You"re Only Loney, Now don"t you ever feel ahshamed, when You're Only Lonley". She died in 2002 at the age of 46, I miss her so.

This song got me through a really rough time in my life back in 1982. And it has been my favorite since then. JD Souther has one of the sweetest smoothest voices I've ever heard. And for me, this song was truly heaven sent.
