First off I'm a girl :-P. Second Obama merely passed versions of Bush's planned bailout. Third, in a time of economic downfall the state can promote growth by investing in infrastructure and giving people extra money to spend. It's like greasing a creaky engine. The investments in infrastructure and new technologies now will, additionally, make life easier for everyone when the economy picks back up and we have shiny new roads, train lines, electric grids and the like to handle the new business.
It's not "taxing our way to prosperity". It's having the government, which has a huge credit line, invest money in the country. It's the way we got out of the great depression with the new deal. This is one of the ways that governments can dig themselves out of depressions and it worked for us. Also most of the rich nations are much more socialist than we are and they have standards of living higher than ours. You'd be blind to think it can't work.
Yeah but conversely why are Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, France, Japan all prosperous? And why are so many countries in Latin America that attempted total free markets basket cases? I think reasonable intervention can help the economy. There was a long period during the great depression when the government did nothing and waited for the market to recover itself... it didn't help. A "do nothing" approach isn't always the best solution.
Free markets are great for economic growth, but they can also be very harmful if they are not kept in check and if the state doesn't help those that get screwed by the system on economic slowdowns. There is also difference between socialism and communism. I don't think anything Obama will do could even be called socialism, he will just turn our balls out capitalism into a milder version of itself. The Right's free market, deregulation policies, brewed the financial crisis.

GW expanded the deficit for years to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Where was your concern for the deficit then? He inherited an enormous surplus from the Clinton years and then ended up with a trillion dollar deficit. If there is a high deficit now under Obama it's because he's trying to fix the economy. Where was your outrage against Bush when he ran up the deficit?

The bailouts were meant to limit the suffering caused by the crisis, under the republican plan the money would have all gone to the rich and to corporations. Under the democrat's plan half of the money went to the little guys most affected by the crisis.

Yeah except he spent it trying to save people's jobs, whereas Bush took us into deficit over a really poorly planned war. Without the bailouts hundreds of businesses would have collapsed, and banks would not be lending money for transactions. If banks don't let money for transactions no businesses can operate. Because businesses have to pay for most things in advance, before they make a profit. If the Right hadn't messed up the economy though, bailouts would not have been needed.
I'm not drooling over him, but you have to admit that getting into the hardest and most prestigious law school in the country and being an editor of the law review (which only the top 10% of the class at Harvard Law can join) is pretty damn impressive. If you consider the low numbers admitted into Harvard, and the fact that he's one of the smartest students, there's pretty good evidence that he's -really- competent. And at least he didn't get into college because of his daddy like GW.

Ok so why didn't you get upset about Bush getting into school because he was rich and his dad was the president? Why didn't you get upset when a C student led us to Iraq with lies and screwed up our economy? Obama's grades were better than GW's so it doesn't really matter does it? Why is affirmative action any worse than rich kids getting into college because their dads donate a lot of money and get good grades because they went to the best primary schools and get a ton of other benefits?
I'm not saying he has the right to make mistakes (five times worse is a little much though... Bush accidentally took us on a war that's killed thousands of people and damaged our credibility). I think Obama did the right thing, and I think that time will probably prove that what they did was correct. I don't think that doing nothing but raising tariffs, if that's the alternative, would have been enough. Especially since the crisis is not a local US problem, it's an international one.
I think that Obama and Bush's major responses to the economic crisis are already done and over with. I don't think that we can change the past. And I think they did the right thing. However, over time the economy will recover regardless of what anyone does. (As long as nobody does anything retarded). Investing in education, infrastructure and new technologies could provide a huge boost if it increases our intellectual and technological dominance.

I think the stimulus was needed. I think further investment might be needed too. When the economy crashes so bad it's necessary for the government to do things to alleviate not only the suffering of those worst hit, but also to create conditions where people can start spending and investing again. Besides there is no way in hell that any of the stimulus packages will "destroy" the economy as a lot of you have pointed out. Just wait 4-6 years, the economy won't be "destroyed". That's just BS.

Let me use a defense that Bush often used, you don't know enough about economics to know all that is going on right now, you don't have all of the information that congress and the president have. Trust them to represent you. You live in a democracy, Obama won the election. And to my mind there was very little good done by the previous administration, so I have no problem waiting and seeing what happens. If you guys feel so strongly about it vote for someone else in the next elections.
Problem is honey, Obama wasn't elected off of presenting this spending policy. If he did, he never would have won election. On top of that, we do live in a very complex society where economics are concerned. But, it really isn't that complicated. If the government is withholding information that have to do with our economic status, then this isn't a democracy anymore. Plus, Bush did terrible, and Obama will be doing worse. As I said, deciding to wait and see, is to give your freedom away.

That the government should keep it's hands off the economy and that it's better to let private industry work these problems out. The problem with that so called "leave-it-alone" approach is that it didn't work. Recovery from the great depression didn't begin until FDR and his heavy legislative stimulus (bailout) programs. We should learn from history.
Oh, and if you'd like to do some REAL research, you'd learn that both political parties were nearly identical. The major differences only occurred during the non-conformist movement in the 1960s. Which was a dark turning point for this nation's history.

It was due to the fact that the demand for steel increased dramatically. Not by some stupid bailout. FDR is a great man, but WWII "bailed" us out of the great depression honey. You don't understand, watch the video. His spending is not an investment. It goes to the people's medicare and retirement plans. The government should not be paying people to live. That is why people obtain jobs to begin with. Its the fundamentals of Capitalism. FDR invested in creating jobs to create roads, power source, and to clean up cities. The Great Depressions was different, we don't need that now. All Obama is doing is spending money on us, we can't afford. Watch the video.

You don't understand the gravity of the economic sinkhole that Bush left the country in though. A heavy handed FDR style approach is the only thing that's going to get us out of the economic quagmire that the last administration left the world in. Besides, when Obama said that, it was criticizing GW's huge deficit during a good economy. It was hard back then to predict that the guy you voted for would screw up the economy so bad that an FDR style intervention would be needed.

I agree with government intervention, and I think that when the economy recovers the added tax revenue from increased economic activity will pay for the debt. Anyway there's no way that john McCain or anyone else could have gotten away without passing some kind of legislative stimulus package, that's just impossible. If you'd been president you would have done the same thing or been protested out of office.
McCain, Kerry, Gore, Bush, Obama. I don't care, such an economic spending policy NEEDS to be protested out of office. The solution is a tough one, and requires a sacrifice of luxury which most people are not willing to give. Increase taxes on imports, release taxes on exports, invest in nuclear power (become more energy dependent like France), and slowly revise welfare, medicare, and social security.
I agree with the nuclear power point. But I really don't think that raising trade barriers is going to stimulate international trade. If we raise our tariffs, and every other country does the same then international commerce would slow to a crawl, just like in the great depression. That's not a solution, that's a recipe for disaster.

Not necessarily, we are exporting services. We design, we make the plans, market, finance and other countries build the things cheap. There's more $ in the design/service side than there is in the manufacturing side. Think about it in terms of a city and the country. A city doesn't need to produce its own food and materials. It produces services and products that are worth a lot of money and buys whatever cheap stuff it needs from the country. That's exactly what the US does (like a big city).
I think it can work, ordinarily, the problem is that the banking crisis was essentially a giant outside wrench hit to the gears. These "AAA" banks were trading bad loans and were often leveraged 1/30 (that means that their debt was in many cases nearly 30 times the money they were bringing in). It was just a ridiculous situation totally outside the norm (which could have been prevented with tighter regulation of the banking sector, especially with stronger international banking oversight).

Temperature does correlate with solar cycles. The question is if the sun is responsible for the recent increase in temperature. Solar activity confirms most of the rises in temperature for the past few hundred years, but not the recent one.
Well temperatures have been dropping over the past decade, and the recent temperature rise (over the last hundred years) is 1 degree C. (if rounded up)
The thing is a slight increase in temperature will set off a chain of effects that will lead to more CO2 being released and a greater increase in temperature. The commonly accpeted hypothesis by scientist is that our industrial output of
CO2 is what is causing the most recent increase in temp.
A ten year period is not enough time to account for climate change.
Logic: As I understand there is no dispute that in the distant past have been period with even greater CO2 levels than today. The idea = unusual warmth = release of CO2 from oceans = greenhouse gas = chain-effect of warming. BUT something is clearly missing. BC noone explains how and WHY in the past this chain-reaction reverses itself, as it clearly has numerous times, and the climate gets colder again. Do you have ideas or info?
There are many factors that can cause chain reactions to warm the planet after an ice age. As I've said before, it only takes a slight change in temperature with help from CO2 to set off a huge reaction. As for things that cause and end these cooling and warming periods, things like dust in the atmosphere reflecting sunlight, a shift in earth's orbit, and decreased solar energy are just some of the things which can initially change the temperature.
Let's also hope the democrats keep pushing the torture issue that way it sets Obama up to be judged the same way for killing innocent people in Pakistan where then the media can turn right around and use his race to attempt to protect him....If you are so concerned with what Bush had done taking away liberties and starting a socialist bailout then why is it ok when team Obama ratchets up phone tapping and cranks spending and bail outs up?

Third, in a time of economic downfall the state can promote growth by investing in infrastructure and giving people extra money to spend. It's like greasing a creaky engine. It's not "taxing our way to prosperity". It's having the government, which has a huge credit line, invest money in the country. It's the way we got out of the great depression with the new deal. This is one of the ways that governments can dig themselves out of depressions and it worked for us. Also most of the rich nations are much more socialist than we are and they have standards of living higher than ours. You'd be blind to think it can't work.

I think reasonable intervention can help the economy. There was a long period during the great depression when the government did nothing and waited for the market to recover itself... it didn't help. A "do nothing" approach isn't always the best solution.

Without the bailouts hundreds of businesses would have collapsed, and banks would not be lending money for transactions. If banks don't let money for transactions no businesses can operate. Because businesses have to pay for most things in advance, before they make a profit. If the Right hadn't messed up the economy though, bailouts would not have been needed.

I'm not drooling over him, but you have to admit that getting into the hardest and most prestigious law school in the country and being an editor of the law review (which only the top 10% of the class at Harvard Law can join) is pretty damn impressive. If you consider the low numbers admitted into Harvard, and the fact that he's one of the smartest students, there's pretty good evidence that he's -really- competent. And at least he didn't get into college because of his daddy like GW.

Ok so why didn't you get upset about Bush getting into school because he was rich and his dad was the president? Why didn't you get upset when a C student led us to Iraq with lies and screwed up our economy? Obama's grades were better than GW's so it doesn't really matter does it? Why is affirmative action any worse than rich kids getting into college because their dads donate a lot of money and get good grades because they went to the best primary schools and get a ton of other benefits?

I'm not saying he has the right to make mistakes (five times worse is a little much though... Bush accidentally took us on a war that's killed thousands of people and damaged our credibility). I think Obama did the right thing, and I think that time will probably prove that what they did was correct. I don't think that doing nothing but raising tariffs, if that's the alternative, would have been enough. Especially since the crisis is not a local US problem, it's an international one.

I think that Obama and Bush's major responses to the economic crisis are already done and over with. I don't think that we can change the past. And I think they did the right thing. However, over time the economy will recover regardless of what anyone does. (As long as nobody does anything retarded). Investing in education, infrastructure and new technologies could provide a huge boost if it increases our intellectual and technological dominance.

I think the stimulus was needed. I think further investment might be needed too. When the economy crashes so bad it's necessary for the government to do things to alleviate not only the suffering of those worst hit, but also to create conditions where people can start spending and investing again. Besides there is no way in hell that any of the stimulus packages will "destroy" the economy as a lot of you have pointed out. Just wait 4-6 years, the economy won't be "destroyed". That's just BS.

Let me use a defense that Bush often used, you don't know enough about economics to know all that is going on right now, you don't have all of the information that congress and the president have. Trust them to represent you. You live in a democracy, Obama won the election. And to my mind there was very little good done by the previous administration, so I have no problem waiting and seeing what happens. If you guys feel so strongly about it vote for someone else in the next elections.

Problem is honey, Obama wasn't elected off of presenting this spending policy. If he did, he never would have won election. On top of that, we do live in a very complex society where economics are concerned. But, it really isn't that complicated. If the government is withholding information that have to do with our economic status, then this isn't a democracy anymore. Plus, Bush did terrible, and Obama will be doing worse. As I said, deciding to wait and see, is to give your freedom away.

Hah! No one could do worse than GW. The first responder to the great depression back in 1929, Hoover, believed in what Republicans believe today. That the government should keep it's hands off the economy and that it's better to let private industry work these problems out. The problem with that so called "leave-it-alone" approach is that it didn't work. Recovery from the great depression didn't begin until FDR and his heavy legislative stimulus (bailout) programs. We should learn from history.

It was due to the fact that the demand for steel increased dramatically. Not by some stupid bailout. FDR is a great man, but WWII "bailed" us out of the great depression honey. That is why people obtain jobs to begin with. Its the fundamentals of Capitalism. FDR invested in creating jobs to create roads, power source, and to clean up cities. You don't understand the gravity of the economic sinkhole that Bush left the country in though. A heavy handed FDR style approach is the only thing that's going to get us out of the economic quagmire that the last administration left the world in. Besides, when Obama said that, it was criticizing GW's huge deficit during a good economy. It was hard back then to predict that the guy you voted for would screw up the economy so bad that an FDR style intervention would be needed.

I agree with government intervention, and I think that when the economy recovers the added tax revenue from increased economic activity will pay for the debt. Anyway there's no way that john McCain or anyone else could have gotten away without passing some kind of legislative stimulus package, that's just impossible. If you'd been president you would have done the same thing or been protested out of office.

The solution is a tough one, and requires a sacrifice of luxury which most people are not willing to give. Increase taxes on imports, release taxes on exports, invest in nuclear power (become more energy dependent like France), and slowly revise welfare, medicare, and social security.

I agree with the nuclear power point. But I really don't think that raising trade barriers is going to stimulate international trade. If we raise our tariffs, and every other country does the same then international commerce would slow to a crawl, just like in the great depression. That's not a solution, that's a recipe for disaster.

Not necessarily, we are exporting services. We design, we make the plans, market, finance and other countries build the things cheap. There's more $ in the design/service side than there is in the manufacturing side. Think about it in terms of a city and the country. A city doesn't need to produce its own food and materials. It produces services and products that are worth a lot of money and buys whatever cheap stuff it needs from the country. That's exactly what the US does (like a big city).

I think it can work, ordinarily, the problem is that the banking crisis was essentially a giant outside wrench hit to the gears. These "AAA" banks were trading bad loans and were often leveraged 1/30 (that means that their debt was in many cases nearly 30 times the money they were bringing in). It was just a ridiculous situation totally outside the norm (which could have been prevented with tighter regulation of the banking sector, especially with stronger international banking oversight).

Increased temperatures leads to CO2 that is dissolved in ocean water being released.
With increased temperatures, gas solubility decreases.
That is why CO2 lags temperature.

There are many factors that can cause chain reactions to warm the planet after an ice age. As I've said before, it only takes a slight change in temperature with help from CO2 to set off a huge reaction. As for things that cause and end these cooling and warming periods, things like dust in the atmosphere reflecting sunlight, a shift in earth's orbit, and decreased solar energy are just some of the things which can initially change the temperature.
