What if a veteran dies without surviving family members? Can he still request military funerah honors? Can the funeral director request the honors on behalf a veteran who has a pre-planned funeral agreement with the funeral home mandating these honors, or does a member of the family always have to come forward with the request, even in that case?
You do not have to have a surviving family member to be eligible for military honors. If you served one day active duty you will get military honors. The funeral director will coordinate everything.
That's how my grandfather's military part of his funeral went

Good video for those who will have to plan a military funeral for someone. Just lets one know who to contact, if nothing else.
