Nobody can touch that! There's no words to describe a voice that amazing! When Mariah debuted, the record company said "A Voice came down from the heavens", that's about as close as i can get to describing Mariah!

The reason I love this performance is because she sings the "Tell me how to stop the rain" like she does on the studio version. In most performances, she does "Lord I'm needing you now, won't you tell me how to stop the rain..."

I don't that Christina could sing in this keyrange. And if she can, it would be very annoying, sometimes when Christina sings she yells too much, like she's straining. Christina's voice is close to immitating Whitney, but still doesn't come that close to Whitney when she first came out.
Mariah back in the day sang very controlled, without straining. I do think that Christina's music is underrated cause 'Stripped' was a good album. But i cannot listen to her live performances..

And I really don't get why she is constantly compared to Whitney - I guess people compared them because of the vocal acrobatics in which they were especially proficient. But their voices are very different - when Whitney came out, she had this clear, soprano timbre to her voice while Mariah arrived with a dark, husky and alto-esque timbre. They even use different techniques, and they are vastly different when it comes to live performances.
I really, truly, think that this was Mariah's voice at its best - or at least, it was this voice that I like best among all the voices she used during her career. Some prefer the glassy texture of her 1995-1996 years; I, meanwhile prefer this lower, darker and more soulful tone. This performance actually surprised me; although, again, I could do away with her hand gestures which were better then than they are now. It's sad to think that her skills as a live performer decreased from then to now.
i know i think she has the potential to do so much more with her voice and its like she has given up to try and fit into todays society she was wayy better back then

the only way we are going to hear the difference in mariahs voice is if she sings in a small club like this one. it is sooo much easier to sing in a small venue rather than huge stadiums.
i disagree i have sang in front of a 6,000 strong audience and i hafto say it's much harder to sing to a 100 strong audience because you focus on them individually rather than just a mass of people
Yeah but during her charmbracelet "shining through the rain" exhibition she said its easier and better and preferable for her to sing in a small venue because it allows her to connect with her fan in a more "intimate" setting. Doesn't sound stressful to me
I disagree. Smaller venues feel like you are singing to individual people, especially if you are singing to a group of your peers. That is the most frightening thing to do, at least for me it is.
Larger groups, oddly enough, give you more anonymity, because, to the performer, the audience appears as if it is just a wave of people, rather than individual faces and bodies.
For someone like Mariah who has obviously overcome stage fright, it would indeed be easier to sing in a smaller venue because you can hear your voice soo much better. When your singing in a huge stadium you have to compete with the huge band behind you and then you have to deal with the echo that a stadium causes. When your in a small venue with a 5 piece band you can hear yourself so much better. Its almost impossible to sing in a low falsetto when you can't hear yourself.
at 3:01 very clear strong whistle! And she didn't struggle. She was perfect at doing high notes in those days, she can still but it seemed stronger back then in the 1990's.
No it doesn't beatmania, that's a very common misconception. People say the same thing about using the whistle register. It's a ridiculous assumption.
I'd have to agree with ChERrYPiE209 that she is the best singer in the world. Too bad she had to change her style to being slutty. The 90's were the best for her.
Mariah was gorgeous at this time in her life. Perfectly thin and trim with really pretty soft curly hair. I haven't liked her image as much since she took on more of a slutty look and attitude.

One of my favorite things about Mariah is that you can see in her face that she really cares about how she is doing. She tries hard ! Especially in these early videos, I can feel her passion and determination .

she was amazing in the old days! I was 12 when I heard her sing "without you" for the first time. I thought "wow, this is what really good singing should sound like, this is the kind of music I want to do". Well, I am not Mariah, nobody is, she is so unique, but she's been an idol to me for years!

I don't that Christina could sing in this keyrange. And if she can, it would be very annoying, sometimes when Christina sings she yells too much, like she's straining. Christina's voice is close to immitating Whitney, but still doesn't come that close to Whitney when she first came out.
Mariah back in the day sang very controlled, without straining. I do think that Christina's music is underrated cause 'Stripped' was a good album. But i cannot listen to her live performances..

sexyslim1982 wow, I agree 100%, I think the same. Christina has a superb voice, but most of the time is just annoying. I wonder what is the key to know when you're using a powerful voice or a yelling voice, because sometimes christina is just pure yelling, at least to me, and some people just stand up and give her a round of applause and I say what?, that was horrible

@sexyslim1982 I think this is especially true during the "Back to Basics" era, and around the time of her first album.. her voice was amazing during the Stripped era.. but I agree: she always struggles with the higher notes.

And I really don't get why she is constantly compared to Whitney - I guess people compared them because of the vocal acrobatics in which they were especially proficient. But their voices are very different - when Whitney came out, she had this clear, soprano timbre to her voice while Mariah arrived with a dark, husky and alto-esque timbre. They even use different techniques, and they are vastly different when it comes to live performances.

I really, truly, think that this was Mariah's voice at its best - or at least, it was this voice that I like best among all the voices she used during her career. Some prefer the glassy texture of her 1995-1996 years; I, meanwhile prefer this lower, darker and more soulful tone. This performance actually surprised me; although, again, I could do away with her hand gestures which were better then than they are now. It's sad to think that her skills as a live performer decreased from then to now.

the only way we are going to hear the difference in mariahs voice is if she sings in a small club like this one. it is sooo much easier to sing in a small venue rather than huge stadiums.

i disagree i have sang in front of a 6,000 strong audience and i hafto say it's much harder to sing to a 100 strong audience because you focus on them individually rather than just a mass of people

Yeah but during her charmbracelet "shining through the rain" exhibition she said its easier and better and preferable for her to sing in a small venue because it allows her to connect with her fan in a more "intimate" setting. Doesn't sound stressful to me

I disagree. Smaller venues feel like you are singing to individual people, especially if you are singing to a group of your peers. That is the most frightening thing to do, at least for me it is.
Larger groups, oddly enough, give you more anonymity, because, to the performer, the audience appears as if it is just a wave of people, rather than individual faces and bodies.

For someone like Mariah who has obviously overcome stage fright, it would indeed be easier to sing in a smaller venue because you can hear your voice soo much better. When your singing in a huge stadium you have to compete with the huge band behind you and then you have to deal with the echo that a stadium causes. When your in a small venue with a 5 piece band you can hear yourself so much better. Its almost impossible to sing in a low falsetto when you can't hear yourself.

at 3:01 very clear strong whistle! And she didn't struggle. She was perfect at doing high notes in those days, she can still but it seemed stronger back then in the 1990's.

Mariah was gorgeous at this time in her life. Perfectly thin and trim with really pretty soft curly hair. I haven't liked her image as much since she took on more of a slutty look and attitude.
