Lucy and Jack Benny were neighbors and friends. His appearance on her show was not a problem in any way. But I have heard that Joan Crawford was drunk on the set and Lucy was not happy about that.
@SymphonyBrahms I said it before and I'll say it again......imagine if Bette Davis was the guest star and not Joan Crawford. I mean it would've been constant bickering and bitching between the two actresses......cause I read that Bette stated that Lucille Ball would never make it in this business. Obviously she was wrong....lol.
@SymphonyBrahms I always loved the episodes with Lucy and Jack Benny. They were a riot together. Finally in Season 6 we get to see the episode where Lucy gets Jack Benny's bank account.
Lucy was a total bitch to Joan during this episode. Lucy could be a total bitch and among the people who had really bad experiences working with her besides Joan Crawford were Jack Benny, Joan Blondell and Tom Bosley.
@MySushiBear From what I've read is that Joan was late a few times for rehearsals, or something similar, and Lucy blew up at her and threatened to fire her. Joan insisted on fulfilling her contract and Lucy made the experience a living hell for Joan. As strong a personality as Joan was there were times when she didn't fight back, especially in later years. To quote Joan: "They say that I'm a bitch, well Lucy can outbitch me any day of the week!"
Joan knew her daughter was writting a book about how she was treated growing up. And I love how the script has the studio begging joan to take a movie when she was actually realeased (fired) from metro because all the excecs said she was box office posion
@pummieb- well, keep in mind she was called box office poison in 1938, 30 years before this, and in between had like 4 successful comebacks, 1 Oscar and two more nominations. By this point, however, the studio "begging" her to do a movie is pretty much fantasy...lol
I know Lucy was pretty harsh on Joan...Shame on Lucys part for inviting Joan and then not treating her properly!!!!! I love lucy... have every single episode of the lucy show and I love lucy on DVD and adore her and know everything about her!!!!! but in all do respect the queen of comedy should have had more respect for the ill-fated queen of Hollywood.
@wannabeangel83 She was harsh on Joan because all Joan did was drink on the job. Read Jim Brochu's memoir. There was a reason for such actions - Joan Crawford, as wonderfully talented and beautiful as she was, was a boozer.
Half way through this video, I read up on Joan Crawford's abuse toward her children. This woman was a fucking bitch and I'm glad she is dead, and burning in hell. Fucking abusive cunt, I can't watch the rest of this episode.
And if anyone says that her daughter is fabricating the stories of abuse, why the fuck would anybody make up such vicious rumors?
@changl72 You don't solve problems and cruelty in the world by turning around and showing that same sort of hatred and abuse. No matter what the woman may have done, or how bad she may have been, you should never celebrate the death of another.
@changl72 - i suggest you do some more reading. She had two other daughters who have said she was a tough but loving, caring mother and that Christina wrote the book for money, and out of jealousy ("Christina wanted to be the one thing she could never be, and that was mother", one of them later said").
Joan crawford NEVER ONCE beat her kids with wire hangers she yelled at them not to use them, she never fucking 'beat her daughter' with a wire hanger, that movie is complete bullshit, and Faye dunaway even thinks so herself, thats why she never talks about ti and refuses to becuase she regrets it. so all of you should learn your facts and stop trashing Joan's name just becuase her daughter was an attention seeking jealous brat.
Lucille ball could actually be a REALLY big Bitch,Worse than Joan Crawford ever was,so many people said Joan was generous and freindly, sure she had her times when she was cold and bossy, but Lucy was more hard to work with, she fought with almost EVERYONE who guested on her show.
I love Lucy and when I was a little girl I loved watching yoy for you I knew that i was In love with you and the things you did for all us gay ppl thanks for you love we will all be grateful for you Thank You MY Friend <3
@2ndteam No, it's not. Gary Morton, Lucy's second husband, did play a few parts on "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy" over the years. But this actor is Lew Parker, best known for being Ann Marie's father on "That Girl."
Joan was not a horrible person, and Bette Davis eather. The case is,Christine got jealous of her.Joans son never criticized his mum and plz, don´t forget the age of Christine as she got pregnant while she have been on a collage.
I wonder if these stars of yesteryear had any clue that they would be entertaining people for centuries? Can you think of any current tv show that could say that? I can count the movies on one hand that will be considered still watchable in 20 years.
@bootsamou Oh no harm done. Sorry I get a little defensive when it comes to Joan. She's taken so many hard knocks. There is so much people don't talk about, how she paid the medical bills for screen guild members for 30 years who could not afford medical care, she supported tons of charities. She reached out to people who were struggling and gave them a helping hand.
I remember reading Esther Williams' biog a few years ago & she said that, at 5' 8", she towered over Gene & Frank in "Ball Game" coz they were so much shorter. (Apparently they treated her real bad coz they didnt think she had much talent apart from swimming. I think they'd wanted Judy !). According to most records now, it seems that both Gene & Frank were 5' 7" ish.
@bootsamou I remember reading somewhere that Gene was 5'10" but I could see that he may appear shorter simply because of the way he danced. He was always lower to the ground as apposed to Astaire who stood so tall when he danced.
@belpomp Lucy and Joan had more in common than people thought--while Joan was "whippin" the kids, Lucy was giving Desi verbal whippings. And when Joan was working for Lucy, Lucy was so demanding and captious, Joan broke down and cried and said that people who thought SHE was a "bitch" should look at Lucy.
@shadejford Imagine if it was Bette Davis guest starring and not Joan Crawford. I read that Bette Davis said that Lucille Ball would never make it, picture the on air fighting with the two, I'm not sure if they could or couldn't tolerate each other, I could be wrong though.
@adamdicy There would be some tension. Lucy, along with her then husband Desi, eventually bought the old RKO Studios lot on Gower St and keep it solvent as "The Desilu Studios" for about nine years, whereas Warner Brothers had set up Davis with her production company and that lasted only a short time. Unlike Lucy, Bette was not a business person.
I. of course, meant "DESILU". One more Lucy/Joan story. Joan kept showing up late to rehearsal. Lucy called her, finally, and Joan said she'd "overslept". Lucy: "Well, listen- if you're not here at 10:00 on the nose tomorrow, you're FIRED! You GOT that? FIRED !!" When Lucy stormed back to the set, she told Gale Gordon, "Do you know what that broad SAID to me? Joan cried, 'But, no one's ever fired me before!" Gale Gordon said that Lucy was SO mad, her hair was "literally sranding on end".
@rockergirl145 - here's one 4 u : One day on the set of "Here's Lucy", Vivian Vance was doing a guest shot. Lucy was being "made up" by Hal King, & in a BAD mood. Vivian had had a stroke, and she was kind of "out of it". She came up to Lucy, held up 2 dresses, and asked, sweetly, "Lucy, which dress do u think I should I wear?" According to the director of the show, Lucy screamed, "What DIFFERENCE does it make?!! U look like a COW in ANYthing U wear!" And "Aunt Viv" ran away, weeping.
@fusock -- It's called "DesiLu", by Coyne Steven Sanders, & Tom Gilbert. ... even Lucy and Desi's children say that this is the best bio about their parents, and the most accurate , ever written. It's almost the perfect book!
According the the great book, "Drsilu": Lucy saw Joan with her head down in her purse, with TWO straws in her mouth. Lucy said, "What'cha got in there?" It was 100 proof vodka- and Pepsi. Then, Joan was doing the Charleston, but she was nervous. Lucy: "OMG! You got your break dancing, and YOU CAN'T DANCE! I don't BELIEVE it!" Joan ran away, weeping hysterically. Later, Joan told the director, "And they say I'M a B----... Lucy can out B---- me ANY day of the week!"
@BigDickMcGirk thats cause Crawford was drunk all the time and she didn't remember her lines. Very unprofessional but it sounds just like her. I would believe Joan was a bitch before I believed it about Lucy.
It's true that they were friends then during rehearsals & air time, Joan supposedly drank too much and wasn't too great during her stint on The Lucy Show. Lucille Ball was a perfectionist and was all about timing which made her TV series so popular. I love when Mr Mooney says, "Good Heavens! It's the Smother's Mother!" and they do that funny look by moving their head to look at the audience after a punch line was delivered.
I love The Lucy Show and I Love Lucy, and she's just playing her part, she reads script, so if your thinking about dissing Lucille Ball, you should do that somewhere else, or post it on your channel.
@309hey I love Lucy and I love the Lucy Show much more the Her's Lucy. Also I love Vivian Vance when she was with the show. CBS' color is brilliant by this time. Lucy looked amazing surrounded by the Blue colors on the show since her red hair and anything blue really looked greatI'dliek to start getting the seasons on dvd.I Haveall of the I love Lucy shows and specials.
@keithcop You're right, that's Marlo Thomas' father on That Girl.
Also: We have here two Lucilles. Lucille Ball and Lucille LeSueur (Joan's real name)
Don't know exactly why but I heard Lucy wasn't too happy working with Joan, that she (Joan) was difficult. Maybe because Lucille Ball was a perfectionist? [Richard Burton didn't care for his guest spot in the Here's Lucy show.]
Vivian Vance was still a great comic partner! Note her reaction on 4:34 Lucy relies on Vivian's timing.
@xxcharmed1xx NO! Smartiepants! I was not there! Haven't you ever seen the movie called, "Mommy Dearest", Faye Dunnaway played Joan Crawford in this movie.
And it was a true story based on her life. I chose NOT to cuss because Iam a Christian woman! You got that!!??
@LizzielovesJC Yes i saw that movie and thought it was a true story until i researched it more and realized what kinda person christina crawford, just like bette davis's daughter B.D. Just b/c its based on a true story doesnt mean it really happened that way it did in the movie, there are two sides to every story and unfortunately joan never got to tell her side.
@xxcharmed1xx Ahhhhh. I see. So sorry hun if I offended you with my remarks.
My remarks were, "You got that!!??" and I called you smartiepants. Iam so, so sorry hun. You seem to be really, and trully nice. :) I deeply apologize to you.
God bless! And yes, you are right about the movie. Some of it might NOT have
@maddddyalice I was just about to type that... lol... I'm uploading "Mommie Dearest" on my channel and Faye Dunaway gave me the impression that Ms. Crawford was rather tall..
Thats also prolly why lucy acted clumsy and broke her glass, she didn't want her to drink on her show! lol but joan didn't hesitate to pull her drink back and save it!
haha, if u notice, joan's lemonade is slightly a different color right b4 they begin to cheer, wonder what she spiked in her own drink, lol. LOVE U JOAN!
Does anyone notice that Lucy's voice is normal here. There is not a hint of horseness or anything! Her voice sounds just the same as it did in the begining seasons. Maybe because Vivian was around. lol.
@steven1660 If you ever get the chance, check out an old Lucille Ball movie, " My Left Foot". I can't tell for certain, BUT, I think, it's actually here singing voice.. Anyway, check it out, have fun.
Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance have always had great chemistry together when they were filming episodes - Vance was once considered to be a regular on Lucy's third series, "Here's Lucy" but she was really ill at the time and could only do occasional guest episodes-
She speaks like Baby Jane Hudson, lol...

NFitalianGuy 1 year ago
@koln1996 only because joan showed up drunk to rehearsals and was drinking in front of the children on set >:/
sephirothx1339 1 year ago
I love The Lucy Show and I Love Lucy, and she's just playing her part, she reads script, so if your thinking about dissing Lucille Ball, you should do that somewhere else, or post it on your channel.
309hey 1 year ago
@309hey I love Lucy and I love the Lucy Show much more the Her's Lucy. Also I love Vivian Vance when she was with the show. CBS' color is brilliant by this time. Lucy looked amazing surrounded by the Blue colors on the show since her red hair and anything blue really looked greatI'dliek to start getting the seasons on dvd.I Haveall of the I love Lucy shows and specials.

I agree, her voice sounds like Bette Davis, it's uncanny!

It's not Gary, but Lou Parker, from "That Girl."
keithcop 1 year ago
@keithcop You're right, that's Marlo Thomas' father on That Girl.
Also: We have here two Lucilles. Lucille Ball and Lucille LeSueur (Joan's real name)
Don't know exactly why but I heard Lucy wasn't too happy working with Joan, that she (Joan) was difficult. Maybe because Lucille Ball was a perfectionist? [Richard Burton didn't care for his guest spot in the Here's Lucy show.]
Vivian Vance was still a great comic partner! Note her reaction on 4:34 Lucy relies on Vivian's timing.
corfan99 1 year ago
@corfan99 i read that Lucy had a problem with Joan's drinkng.
MsKelliGIzaStar 1 year ago
I know that's Joan Crawford, but it sounds like Bette Davis. The man Joan is talking to is Gary Morton who married Lucy after Lucy and Desi divorced.
Beautifulmusiclistnr 1 year ago
@Beautifulmusiclistnr there is no mistaking Bette Davis` voice.

@LizzielovesJC were you there?
xxcharmed1xx 1 year ago
@xxcharmed1xx NO! Smartiepants! I was not there! Haven't you ever seen the movie called, "Mommy Dearest", Faye Dunnaway played Joan Crawford in this movie.
And it was a true story based on her life. I chose NOT to cuss because Iam a Christian woman! You got that!!??
LizzielovesJC 1 year ago
@LizzielovesJC Yes i saw that movie and thought it was a true story until i researched it more and realized what kinda person christina crawford, just like bette davis's daughter B.D. Just b/c its based on a true story doesnt mean it really happened that way it did in the movie, there are two sides to every story and unfortunately joan never got to tell her side.
xxcharmed1xx 1 year ago
@xxcharmed1xx Ahhhhh. I see. So sorry hun if I offended you with my remarks.
My remarks were, "You got that!!??" and I called you smartiepants. Iam so, so sorry hun. You seem to be really, and trully nice. :) I deeply apologize to you.
God bless! And yes, you are right about the movie. Some of it might NOT have
happened the way the movie is. :)
And ofcourse I was NOT there. lol!!!
God bless you! :)

sillbill94 1 year ago
Does anyone notice that Lucy's voice is normal here. There is not a hint of horseness or anything! Her voice sounds just the same as it did in the begining seasons. Maybe because Vivian was around. lol.
steven1660 1 year ago
@steven1660 If you ever get the chance, check out an old Lucille Ball movie, " My Left Foot". I can't tell for certain, BUT, I think, it's actually here singing voice.. Anyway, check it out, have fun.

Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance have always had great chemistry together when they were filming episodes - Vance was once considered to be a regular on Lucy's third series, "Here's Lucy" but she was really ill at the time and could only do occasional guest episodes-
