Is any of these methods practical for real ancient combat? Or is it just as an art and exercise? I am very interested in learning how to do this someday. But I dont want to practice some kind of art form. But real combat training as if they would have done it in the past.
@TheMedievalMan It is an art, an exercise and combat fighting. It is an art because of it's control, balance and fluid movements. It is an exercise because the weapon act as an intrument in attaining proper posture, strengthening joints and muscles improve flexibility, concentration and coordination of hand and eye movements. It is combat because all it's movements and techniques are combat related and that is why it is called Martial Art!
@PakDaeHan Those are performance blade, it can easily be replace with real sharpen combat kwan dao and it comes in different weight and size to suite the soldier strength and abilities. Example; a 6'6 soldier will have an 8 ft kwan dao, a 5'5 soldier will have a 6 or 7 ft kwan dao.
For the infantry it is carry by hand. For the cavalry same thing. Usually for the officers they will have an aid or squire that carry their long weapons for them. Having a strap would probably been use as an option too.
I didn't like the form because forms are like your fighting with someone or someones. Your's didn't catch my attention, but I got a couple of ideas with it in my form.
Check out the video response. She's 9 here and using a heavier blade than most of the men competitors. This is a 5.5 lbs 9 ring kwan dao (no it's not a pudao). Most of the wushu weight kwan dao's are abou5 3 lbs. She has one of those, too, but you can't use them in a traditional competition b/c they move too much. Not bad for a kid!
One of the biggest difference between CMA (not all ) but most notably Wu Shu and JMA is that JMA use real weapons the only thing that is remove are the sharpness.
holy crap, that looks hard to use. imagine doing those clinically-precise movements with an actual blade. I think that while wushu steel is kind of satisfying when you hear and feel the fa jin effect, it's more authentic and realistic with a full-weighted blade.
your talking about those battle ready one's huh? but obviously you're not gonna go carrying those out in the mall or something, those things are pretty frightening lol.
Just imagine carrying that 20-40 pound monster with a perfectly keen edge XI
oh yeah just to mention, a chinese broadsword would also be pretty deadly too
the first guy was the best, more strikes, thrusts and slashes and blocks, less spinning and flahy moves. his quan dao looked stiffer as well. There are plenty of guan dao on the market that have stiffer, albeit unsharpened blades. there is NO reason to use these cheesy looking 'wushu' weapons
people need to start showing up to these competitions with real guan dao and smash the shit out of something at the end of their routines, just to show the real power of the real weapon, and yes, you can buy them, they are on the market
The original kwan dao wieded by Gen. Guan Yu is said to weigh about 15-20 lbs. 7-8.5 feet long. Gen. GY alone is a tall strong person 6+ ft. The kwan dao equivalent the cutting power of a battle axe and thrusting power of a lance. The use of lighter kwan dao now a days is basically to demonstrate what it would be like or how it is suppossed to be on a real kwan dao the way Gen. GY wielded it with power, control, accuracy and balance that is what makes him invincible and unstopable in combat.
The original kwan dao of Gen. Guan Yu is unique and not every soldier were capable of wielding it efficiently and effectively to use in winning battles. Yet, the design of kwan dao is ideal as a cutting, slashing and thrusting weapon against heavy or light infantry and cavalry. Because not every soldier has the physique of Gen. Guan Yu the weapon has to be modified make it more manageable by regular soldiers with out losing too much the capabilities of the kwan dao.
sounds fantastic. thank you very much for the information. i have been involved in historical reenacting and the revival of european martial arts. for some reason everyone thinks medieval whites were unskilled thugs with sharp tools. but there were actual learning centers called "colleges of the arts, martial" similar to the temples in asia. some of the the text books still exist from these schools. if the guan dao is as effective as a broad ax, it is one seriously dangerous weapon.
Wushu-steel gives light and wobbly weapons that give the wrong type of power and technique. If you're used to a non-flexi blade and its matching weight your flexi-blade forms are going to look like crap and the air is going to bend the shit out of your blade. IMHO a demo in front of audience or judges should show everything extremely correct, form and power, not a showy dance. Sifu said a Kwan Dao should be between 7 and 11 kg (pounds?) to be practical and powerful.
those be the flimsy kwans mine is at least nice heavy and doesn't bend like that. it would scare me to be near them with those kwans they look like the blades are gonna break off and go flying.
Out of curiosity..how much do the blades way for the people saying their blade is heavy? I haven't even seen a Kwan Dao that is more than ten lbs over here.
This is horrible. they are already using a flimsy lightweight version of the kwan do and it's still slower than me with a baseball bat. the problem with modern day chinese martial arts is they stopped keeping it real.
Exactly, they're using cookie-cutter blades, and calling it a heavy Kwan Do. It looks as though someone made one them out of tin foil. I much prefer the Kwan Do which I made with an ash shaft, and a heavy iron blade and counter-weight.
i swear the chinese are the coolest people to ever use a bladed weapon

These were good! The only thing I didn't like were the flppy tal kawn dao they used. I wish the would use real ones (not sharp though).

@TheMedievalMan the Kwan Dao blade he is using is fucken fake! It rattles, and is flexible, real Kwan Dao blade is made of forged steal.

Do you mean like bringing your weapon from one venue to the other?

Thank you for responding.
I mean, how would a warrior have taken this weapon, from place to place, in ancient times?
Did a strap go over the shoulder? Did he carry it in his hands?

Forms are suppossed to be executed with combat emotion and feeling like fighting with someone in order to make the forms work in actual combat.

I dislike wushu steel because it looks like crap, it too slobby lol. Can't be much of power in that steel.

I agree it takes away the true essence of the weapons.
