  • and I meant "there" not "their"! such mistakes can be taken to disregard the point I am making!

  • everyone's opinions are so childishly surfaced based! sometimes people can be eccentric and not of the norm for NO reason other than Because! but most likely their are hidden reasons! stop being Naive! this is seriously stupid to compare an empowered woman such as Madonna with a woman whose Independence was stripped from her in an era that she narrowly had a fighting chance!

  • Fuck Madonna. There is more talent in Little Edie's safety pin than in Madonna's entire being.

  • did that work ?

  • VERY ENTERTAINING!!!!

  • yes yes yes !!!!!!

  • Oh how I love Edie Beale!! I believe she would have loved this video. I can hear her now, "I think whoever made this video is a very gifted individual, verrrry gifted! It's a classic!"

  • Madonna???? You can't be serious! I think I'm going to be sick!

  • love her!

  • Such a beautiful woman. Your missed Little Edie <3

  • I always wear this costume when visiting the Hamptons!

  • And this woman is older than my mother ?

  • I thought this was very cute...just that I couldn't hear the last things Little Edie said, before the dance number. IMHO, if Little Edie had been born a little later, she might have enjoyed Madonna and her music. They might have even become friends...knowing Madonna, I'm sure she'd realize she could get a lot of mileage out of being the friend of fascinating Little Edie.

  • GAH! The only (vague) similarity between these two is their non-conformism. Little Edie was (and I believe still is) mocked for hers. Though I can't say for certain, I highly doubt Little Edie would have liked this video, let alone 'just loved' this video. Why? Because she had a fire in her that just couldn't be put out. Let's not conflate motivation and greatness. The short sightedness of this generation is something that makes me ashamed of being a part of it.

  • How fun! Little Edie would have just loved this video. :) What a great tribute. Cute.

  • Still love you Edie girl!!!!!

  • Little Edie would LOVE this.

  • Wow could Madoodle please stay out of something that is great in it's own right and not exploit it ?

  • she is amazing

  • Brilliant! Love it !!

  • Oh please every time I see her I think she gave up and just was waiting to die

  • aww give me a break , i mean i don`t have nothing against the video, but don`t put madonna title on it

  • THIS WOMEN IS REALLY CAUGHED UP

  • true uncomformity!!!!!! viva edies

  • Those of you who know nothing about Edie should keep your pop psychology diagnoses to yourself.

  • God bless Edie! A gentle soul.

  • i don't like the spirit of this because I loathe Madonna, and don't like the idea of people turning sincere things into cool things

  • This is insanely fantabulous! Pun intended.

  • LOVE IT/YOU!!!!!

  • Love Edie! Love this! Thanks for putting a smile on my face (I really needed one)!

  • Long live Edie!

  • Her tits are too big to be madonna.

  • I don't like Madonna, and I've never actually seen Grey Gardens, but this woman is fabulous...in a crazy Anne Heche, Margot Kidder, "cat lady" kind of way

  • Little Edie was a natural, unique creative mind.... ...madonna is a jerk

  • How did she lose her hair? Does her mother cut it off?(so she won't leave)

  • I don't think she lost her hair. In certain scenes you can see through her scarf and see that she has grey hair. However maybe it was thinning, and for both of these things she covered up.

  • Edie suffered from a condition called alopecia, hence her hair that has grown back is short and whispy and she has no eyebrows either.

  • no no, this is the revolutionary costume. i never wear this in east hampton.

  • Oh god it works!

  • Darling! how Madonna's song works with Edie's movements. They couldn't be more different as people.

  • so funny!

  • Little Edie is sweet and endearing the way a 7-year old girl spins around and says "look at me! Look at meeeee!" Madonna has always done the same thing, and it has always been tiresome. There's just nobody like Little Edie.

  • Long live Madonna!

  • LOVE the segment 2.06 to 2.17

  • She shows her vulnerability over what people may think at the end of this clip-you can see it in her face when she tuuns from the camera

  • ??? Madonna is the antithesis of Edie Beale!

  • If you like Edie and Madonna...check out the video response I sent you with my song They Say...

    Keep Shining!

    Laura

  • Madonna is an idiot. She claims to be Jewish, yet NOT ONE Rabbi would see her when she came to Israel because she has turned Judaism into a mockery. What an asswipe.

  • YES! I heard about that! Just proves Madonna is a fake as always. She has a severe identity crisis. You need to go through years of study with an Orthodox Rabbi, go in front of a Bet-Din, and Mikveh before you are converted. She did none of these. The Rabbis refused to see her. That was funny as hell. What a moron.

  • What a shame you don't have the respect and tolerance that Edie and her mother tried to show the world in their film. I can't believe you have the venom to criticse some else's belief system, just because a religous leader chose not to see them. Our spirituality is within each of us, to interpret for ourselves, not for others to decide if we are 'real' or not. I don't believe you have a window into Madonna's Soul do you?

  • amen!

  • Very clever I loved it, both edie and Madonna make a great duo!

  • Adorable- keep in mind, this was a woman pushing 60 with that lovely figure- she's gorgeous.

  • Perhaps if I knew what Grey gardens was,lol...

  • It was a documentary about Jackie O's (aka Jackie Kennedy) relatives who lived in the Hamptons. They were reclusive and very excentric. They lived in deplorable condition and never left the house. It was very interesting and sad at the same time.

  • Wow, thanks...sounds like something I might like to experience viewing...

  • How many women almost 60 have their own teeth & are that thin? I hope I am that thin when I am that age. I just wonder why she wears the scarves all the time.

  • She lost most of her hair when she was young.

  • I love the giggle after her description of 'the costume of the day". Almost like, I know it's mad but what else can I do? She was far from mad and I would so loved to have known her

  • Little Edie was life as performance art.

  • Love this- it is so uplifting!Edie looks so happy in it.

  • "Mother wanted me to come out in a kimono, so we had quite a fight!" Love it, timeless woman.

  • amazing how she made the most simple things so bizzare, intriguing, and timeless.

  • I love Grey Gardens. This is a cool twist!!

  • haha! This is fantastic. I love Little Edie and this goes together marvelously.

  • Brilliant idea and brilliantly executed!

  • <<<< wearing bright yellow high heels, black stockings, a lime green skirt and and orange halter top... made up to the gills with a loud paisley scarf... Like Edie this woman lived with her mother. Now after hearing about the filth the Beales lived in I wonder what was this womans story.. Again I say, even the best bred of the top wealth in this counrty has its black sheeps.. In case your wondering, Bryn Mawr PA is the setting of "Philadelphia Story" Like I said not much unlike E Hampton NY.

  • What is it with Blue Bloods? I grew up in a town (Bryn Mawr PA)not that much diiferent from E Hampton. We had our own version of Little Edie. Never knew her name, although she was very well bred. Drove around in an orange VW Beetle... Has a striking resemblence to Joann Worley... Plus dressed like she was stuck in her mind on the set of Laugh In... And this was the late 70s early 80s... Always wore a scarf like Edie.. I will never forget the one day she was in front of me in the ACME>>>>>>

  • Love watching Little Edie. She's so entertaining and original. Too bad she wasn't able to attain "stardom" before her death. She's wonderful. Thanks for posting.

  • Genius. Who'd have thunk it?

  • This is the best thing I've seen on this site. Brilliant!

  • love it, it's like madonna hand picked that song just for this, it fits so well!

  • fabulous

  • Excellent. Great editing. Thank you.

  • This woman was 57-58 in this video. She is stunning and amazing in every sense.

  • I still can't believe that the footage is around 32 years old. I did not know this woman existed beyond today.

  • I know this video gives Edie a smile up in heaven; God bless her!!!

  • I'd date her...(censored)

  • Absolutely brilliant! God bless the Bouviers for giving us two icons of style. Anyone else out there ever notice the fine line between religious ecstacy and secular lunacy? Seems the facial expression is exactly the same.

  • I love this video! Thank You!

  • wow. how the Hell can sum1 "steal your moves"

  • "They can get you in East Hampton for wearing Red Shoes on a Thursday, Did you know that? It's a horrible little Republican town."

Much love for Body Beautiful Beal, and Christine Ebersole

  • Wow! The world is full of Buffoons and MORONS! Anyone who cannot appreciate the BEAUTY and sincerity of this GORGEOUS woman at the age of 57 and all that she has endured and she still GLOWS with fabulous CELEBRITY...is a lost cause! AND at the same time...ALL is VANITY...ALL is in vain....Forever LOVE Little Edie Beal AND Big Edie Beale!!! Jackie doesn't hold a candle to these TRUE beautiful women!!!!Big hugs and kisses>>>>>>>>>>ALWAYS>>>>Mike Erskine Johnson

  • WOW! I LOVE LITTLE EDIE & BIG EDIE! I once wrote them in the 70's...but never received a reply! They must have been bewildered at the time...SO MUCH ATTENTION AND NOTARIETY!!! I hear Jackie "O" immediately got Landscapers and Trash Haulers and Painters out to the House in East Hampton to make it appear that they were not living in squalor in their 28 room manision overrun with 52 pussycats, etc! What a FABULOUS piece of United States History.... Truth is indeed STRANGER than Fiction!

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • I love this woman...she is so amazing...actually more talent than any star today! She was so original and she had so much fun.

  • Thank you, that was genius!

  • SHE is brilliant. WE are the ones who don't get it.

  • disgusting...

  • Love you Edie !

  • ABsolutely TerRIFic!

  • Love it. Just saw Grey Gardens on B'way. Fantastic show. Sad it's closing.

  • what a treat-thankyou.

  • Very clever and fun. Love Madonna and Grey Gardens!

  • OMG SO FUNNY!

  • That's hilarious how they took elements from this movie directly and implemented them into the broadway production. Like how the kimono bit at the beginning is an actual line. xD

  • Brilliant. If you haven't seen "Grey Gardens"...SEE IT!!

  • Does any one think she looks better then madonna doing this?

  • this is really good

  • where is the madonna original hung up music video?!!

  • anyone ever tried synchronizing pink floyd to this??? OMG!!!1 its so eerie!!!1

  • what the hell...no comment!

  • I watch this for inspiration nearly every morning. Those women were incredible. This vid is brilliant.

  • tell this to Robbie Williams. !

  • This clip put me in such a good mood! RIP little Edie!

    UR FIERCE gurl!

  • Little Edie, Madonna, a little ABBA sample......I'm in Heaven!!!!

  • Good one!

  • *tilts head to side* O.o...Huh?

  • Wonderful , upbeat , happy, sentimental

  • (continued) So in this world of expression, and her "safe skirt meets super cape meets chic turban", Go Girl! Just don't sit next to me on the plane. (Kidding!) -Genevieve Gallen, Model and Fashion Designer/Stylist.

  • Hey, Prada sent bright silk turbans down the runway, Spring/Summer 2007 that have been selling out of all US boutiques at $700 plus each, while the US is in "terror" of the Middle East. A "traditional" Muslim/Islamic turban on the airport runway rather the catwalk would cite alarm not a fashion fury!?!

  • OMG I LOVE THIS! TRULY AMAZING! GREAT JOB! AMAZING!

    xoxo

    W

  • simple fucking brillance.

  • FReakkkk

  • I ADORE this! it's amazing! You're the best! love it!

  • uh, this is not a "mashup". lol, it's pretty weird though i'll give it that.

  • Long live the 'revolutionary costume' and little Edie too!

  • Absolutely brilliant! This has inspired me to watch Grey Gardens again this evening, followed by Truth or Dare.

  • That is amazing, thank you for sharing your efforts. Little Edie is my fashion icon.

  • i LOVE this! its amazing!

  • I love her 'pantyhose over pants' fashion theory! I have to watch Grey Gardens again! Brilliant!

  • I wish if you stop some disrepectful thing who hurt some other feeling like by their religion please stop do that

  • No disrespect was intended. This is from a very famous documentary, "Grey Gardens." It was shot in 1975 and is about a very eccentric mother and daughter who live together in a dilapidated 28 room mansion from which the title comes from. They also happened to be related to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Little Edie who is featured here was not poking fun at Muslims, the virgin Mary, Catholic nuns, or any one else for that matter.

  • Little Edie and Madonna, two of my favorite women. BRILLIANT. It's a shame Madonna and Little Edie never crossed paths.

  • that video very idiotic nothing ve this woman nao is q I I am old but it very was delayed.

Traduçao:que video muito idiota, nada ve essa mulher, nao é que eu so antigo mas ela foi muito retardada

  • It never occurred to me that she had probably shaved her head. All this time I thought she was a muslim.

  • Funny,interesting idea.

  • Inspired editing. I love the film (for a LONG time), and feel no disrespect's been presented. Somehow, I think Little Edie would have loved this.

  • 2 very sexy, sassy women (and 1 classy woman) in perfect harmony.

  • this is PURE GENIUS BEYOND GENIUS!!!

  • ke pretenden ¬

  • HIlarious. Madonna wishes she had such originality in matters of dress.

  • scary, i will not sleep tonight

  • Amazing! Great stuff. :) Has everyone seen the new Beals of Grey Garden? The original filmmakers go back to their footage and made a second movie of additional material and its amazing.

  • hey dewds, i made this video. probably the high point of my short-lived film editing career. i definitely love edie and mean no dishonor in this video...

  • Awesome work! I don't think its disrespectful. I think it celebrates here.

  • Hey Edie-

Great video, and well adapted to Madonna's HungUp. Although Caroline Contillo made this video, and perezhilton just linked to it....it's a fun video and will maybe encourage folks to watch GrayGardens!

    MikeDracut (from Dracut, MA)

  • genius!

  • Very cool. I just saw "GG" on Turner Classic Movies a few weeks ago, so I appreciate the video all the more!

  • Little Edie is magic in this video.

I was afraid you were trying to make her look rediculous but, she looks perfect and very happy.

    Love ya Edie!

  • Little Edie is my hero! Her individualism is something I aspire to.

  • hahahahahahar 'no non no this is the revolutionary costume I never wear this in the hamptons" is absolute GOLD!

I named my cat Edie after little Edie

  • I LOVE THIS!!!! I watch it for inspiration regularly!!

  • I wear my revolutionary costume every single day. Thank you Edie for inspiring me again. Madonna...well, We're both from Michigan, both raised Catholic, but...I'm cuter.

  • Little Edie has the type of style and class that Madonna, with all her millions, could never buy. I love ya Edie!

  • Caroline Contillo made this video, and perezhilton just linked to it.

Anyhow, what's brilliant is the implicit critique that Madonna has become Little Edie. You can't deny that their dance routines are pretty similar. The elbow popping on the porch is basically identical to a move Madonna does in her official Hung Up video. But most importantly, they share a certain tragic impulse to hang on to yesterday forever.

  • Yea...Madonna was the first to "pioneer" the theft of Marlene Dietrich's, Marilyn Monroe's and Peggy Lee's style, and have a close-up of her vagina in the center of her 'SEX' book, to make up for extraordinary lack of talent and vocal ability. Now Edie from 'Grey Gardens'...THAT's a true original in all ways. A wonderful woman.

  • ...Not to mention this "pioneering" song of Madonna's used here is HEAVILY sampled ABBA.

  • Great mash-up.

  • ...are you kidding? Little Edie is having a fab time dancing to Madonna. GO FOR IT EDIE! WE LOVE YOU! xx

  • The Grey Gardens documentary is, although voyeuristic and disturbing, a fascinating examination of intruiging women. Madonna is facile, and this pairing of her music to the various clis is unnecessary. Just watch the original film.

  • Viewing this I have to put aside my considerable dislike of Madonna's music because seeing the fabulous Edie dancing to something contemporary is so enjoyable and the song somehow fits.

  • Clever idea I must admit...but a master parodist would have developed it more fully.

  • all credit goes to caroline (el corazon), for making the magic happen: http://www.vimeo.com/clip:30761

  • This is revolutionary. I'm mad about this video.

  • Thank God She never got arrested for wearing red shoes on a Thursday!

  • i don't get it

  • Grey Gardens is superb - not sure whether the sound track cheapens the whole experience somewhat .....

  • Also - can anyone upload more of Grey Gardens as we cannot get it on DVD in UK ???

  • yeah EW was right. this is good.

  • Thanks for making this video, makes a perfect pre-show for my Grey Gardens movie night tonight! Or should I show it after?

  • That's hysterical! The best send-up of Hung Up I've seen

  • Perfection.

  • Agreed. This is absolutely brilliant!

  • Agree with revboi & dynamohumm6 - pure genius

  • Wow. From what I've heard about Grey Gardens, you've really captured it with this! Now, if only I can find a copy to watch!!!

  • 100% PERFECT!!! Completely brilliant. Long live Little Edie.

  • OMG. This is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen!!! Pure genius.
