  • The very last part sounds like the Father Ted theme.

  • @TheHumanBong LOL! Thanks for that.

  • That Variax sounds amazing...thanks for the lesson. This intro has been confusing me for ages.

  • Thanks for the video! You help me out a lot. Ive been trying to get this part for awhile and thanks to this vid I finally got it!

  • @falcoris321 Cool! Good on you for working through it!

  • @twist3dmet4l, obviously you're the greatest bass player that all of us have had the pleasure of meeting here on YouTube. Ah yes! I do now remember all your instructional videos. You're our hero! What great technique you have at talking out your ass! Do us all a favor and keep your annoying comments to yourself and you keep playing for tips because nobody will hire you as you're just too awesome on bass!!

  • what a bass line!!.are there any pull offs in this line?.thanks for the lesson!

  • hey what are you using to mute your string?

  • @aqrzproductions A strip of bath foam. Cut down to fit. Try and have less foam touching the G string than the heavier gauge strings.

  • does nathan watts also use the muter?

  • @labbern That I don't know - but when I listened to it I heard that big, flat wound type sound. So I think I'd just recorded a Jamerson line for a student and just left it in. Have a listen to Sir Duke and see what you think - doesnt' sound like a roundwound type of vibe to me....

  • @howtoplaybassdotcom FWIW I agree with you. However, I recently saw an interview with Nathan Watts where he says that he used roundwounds.

Really appreciate the work you put in and the explanations - particularly naming the notes rather than just fret numbers. Thanks a lot.

  • @3rduncle That's interesting - it doesn't sound roundwound - though back in the day the roundwounds wouldn;t have been as bright as they are now (I don't think). Also the electronics wouldn't have been so 'trebly' either. End of the day - you go with what you think is right I guess. Thanks for dropping by with the info though.

  • Sorry man, but I don't think you're in time at all. It's quite sloppy through-out the whole fast run. I know it's difficult but I don't think you should have a video on YouTube until you yourself can do it correctly. Needs to be a lot tighter and funky.

  • @twist3dmet4l You don't have to apologize. I've got no beef with people making constructive critiscisms - how about you make a vid and post it as a video response so we can see how it should be done?

    Paul

  • @twist3dmet4l People like you make me sick. This guys broke it down and taught this very complex riff to the letter. Just like a "TEACHER" should. If you for whatever reason didn't like then just STFU and don't comment and pass it up, or as he said post your own vid if you think you can do better. You need to apologize for being an asshole!

  • @1bIgFaTsOnOfAbItCh

Bit harsh man, I'm just saying it really is an annoying run and it's really difficult to learn and took me ages to learn for a function. Unfortunately being a music student I've got quite a lot of equipment to buy rather than buy a HD cam otherwise I'd totally do a vid as it's only fair.

It's my opinion and I'm happy someone is teaching on Youtube as it gives bassists a chance in the world. Maybe you should apologise for being an arsehole.

  • @twist3dmet4l Ok, sorry. But I've been playing this song well over 10 and bass much longer than that, and I think this gentleman did a good job of articulating this to the novice and intermediate players.

  • Perfect! By watching this video and the first part I learned the song in a few minutes. :) I was trying to learn it and with this lesson it was a lot easier. :)

    Thank you!

  • @gaulitrecos Wow - if you learned the song in a few minutes you're doing really well - the riff alone is a bad ass line! If you enjoyed the challenge of learning the riff you should learn to play some heads of some be bop tunes. That will really stretch your capabilities, take you to new parts of the fret board, and get you playing 'patterns' and sequences of notes that don't get played very often on fretted instruments.

  • @howtoplaybassdotcom I really wanted to learn the song, that's why I learned it so quickly. But I don't play it perfectly yet. I still miss some tempo and specially some groove. But I'm working on it. :)

    Thanks for the advice!

  • hey Paul, great tutorial man. I am a beginner and play pretty well but only with my index and ring finger sometimes the first three but the pinky is really hard. is this common or is it just me lol

  • YAY! Been waiting for this one for a long time!!!!

Thanks for the great lesson, I will start learning it immediately after work today :)

  • @Bootvi Have fun- apologies again for the delay! Remember to start out SLOWLY and work it up to tempo SLOWLY. Most common mistake beginners and intermediates make is they try and play something at performance tempo too quickly. Get teh notes in your brain before you even think of taking the tempo up....Paul

  • awesome lesson! Thank you for this.

  • @basskuru you're welcome- thanks for the comment. Hope it helps you!
