I have never had a problem training a Siberian Husky, in fact I own four of them. By far one of the most wonderful breeds you'll ever see. With Huskies though, training should be started at a very young age. The guy in this video does offer good advice with the leash walking and exercise, that's very key to most everything you'll do with them. Everyone who watches this video, feel free to check out my page which shows me doing obedience training with my 9 month old Husky.
i have two huskies.....one had food aggression, worked with for a while, no aggression at all now....however, i went to put him outside tonight....he did not want to go and snapped at me.......? they know that when i go to work (12 hour shifts) that they go outside.....usually when i put my jacket on they both run out.....very odd...he is the stubborn one out of the two..but this was unexpected...advice?
The negative comments plaguing this video must have been made by idiots who can only train a dog that's soul desire is to please the people who feeds him, because huskies are amazing, intelligent animals that need an intelligent master to keep them happy, and therefore, attentive to their commands.
My husky is brilliant and gentle, and I believe that is because from 8 weeks old, the day I brought him home, I had him off leash at my side in my backyard (which is 65 acres of field). He is now eight months old, and I take him for off-leash walks at night in quiet neighborhoods in my city. He doesn't leave my side. He has helped a 5 year old in my family get over his fear of dogs with his gentle play. He cuddles with my grandmother's 10 week old kittens.
if ur able to train ur husky the whole escaping can be control...believe me, mine would want to leave, but with the proper training and establishing that ur the alpha....we even walk off leash and he stays by me.
i got my husky when she was a baby at the age of 2 months.. she listens to me perfectly, always comes back, I NEVER and I really mean NEVER needed a leach, I spend a lot of time with her, taught her a lot of things, she is an amazing dog,
so many negative comments.. Ive had my husky 3 years and shes the best dog Ive ever owned. listions to every command. has never once snapped at me. very quiet and lovable. and I live in AZ they can live here. Just cant keep em outside. keep em like a giant lovable house cat lol.. then let em get some exercise in the evenings once it gets cooler out.
I love my husky but he can be troublesome at times. He prefers to be outside so much so that he broke a window inside two different times after I left for work, he never did run off like everyone claims they do though. You have to let them know who is boss or they will not obey you. I got him as a puppy and he has always had a mean streak since he was young but he is a very good dog. If you don't have the time to spend training them then do not get one.
My family had 8 siberian huskies and one alaskan and we used them for sled dogs. they were the best dogs ever, they listened, knew commands and were obedient. I guess if they're doing something they love they are completely reasonable :)
Husky's are highly intelligent but have severe A.D.D. they love to run and get sidetracked easily. They are also stubborn, and take allot of time to train
Ha, tell me about it. I've had my Husky for ten months now and I am still not satisfied with her behavior. She's very very smart, and she understands everything I say, but most of the time she just chooses not to listen to my instruction. And if I don't walk her twice a day, or make her run out in the field, she will do everything to make my life miserable... I still adore her though, but people need to understand that Huskies are very high maintenance.
but he is going to bite u if u help him, if u dont play with him for a long time he will growl and bite u,he wont ever listen to u, all ur going to do is watch him run around the yard and bite u and distroy everything in his sight and oh ya forgot the pooping around the housse. oh ya and he is going to to bite u again.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
he wants to do whatever he wants, if u take him for walks hes going to go anywhere he wants.
Ive only had it snap at me once. Im just watching them for friend had em since they were babies. The good about a husky is that it looks pretty but its still more wolf than dog.let em out and instantly goes to the sound of the chickens, and doesnt care what you say or do to it, it will kill one chicken not even slow down right on to the next, and the next. Should be animal cruelty to own a husky where it is not snowing at least 3/4 of the year.
The husky has to be one of the most stupid animals ive ever had live with me. First it belongs in the snow not arizona, second the hair is not the only prob..... They are wild beasts chicken, cat, dog, sheep, ect. KILLERS. 3rd if you own anything plan on buyin it over and over and over, if they dont get what they want when they want it they destroy anything in sight while running from you.
my huskies arent allowed off their leads - i have 100ft leads for them when i take them over the feild near my house - they will just run and run and run if they get free :( - i know a woman who had 2 huskies 1 got out nearly 2 yrs ago - she hasnt seen him since :( so lettin them offlead isnt worth the risk
If my Huskies have been couped in the house all day then let out free, it is hard to have them come on command. However, once they have run around a bit, sniffed and done their things, they are fine. They love to run and explore but they settle down and walk right along side me once they have stretched their legs. Once been freed outside is no longer a "big deal" they're fine.I find if we are in a place I don't want them to roam too much I simple tie them together with a 3x3x3 stretchable leash
I read in a lot of sites.. that Huskys are one of the most intelligent dogs there is.. anyways.. my friend's dad is a vet and he told me that you can't let them go free.. and whys that if they are so smart >.> I'm still wondering if to get one or not.. I just love this kind of dogs they are so Beautiful
@DTheDeviI Huskies ARE incredibly intelligent. Just try to contain one! That does not mean they are biddable dogs. Every dog has something it will work for, you just have to find it. With a husky, the best thing in the world for them is to run. Run long, far and fast. So why would they give that up for a little piece of cookie? Or a toy, nice word, skritches etc? Unless you can find that magic reward that is better than the run, keep the leash on. Keep up the research! :D
@DTheDeviI Some additional information. Huskys are Intelligent indeed, but also very stubborn. You can let them loose but it is not adviced and only in specific areas. If they get loose and they are called back, they start to think, now i am loose, if you want me catch me if you can. They mostly dont run away immidiatly, they want to stay with the pack and see it more like a game. So thats why you have to train them, show them who is the pack leader.
igot a husky as a gift he is having trouble house training he knows go to bed, sit, lay down, shake at 5 months old. how long will it take to house brake him?i take him out 5 times a day but he will hold it in his crate for 6 hours. if he goes on the floor we take him out right after he finishes cuz if we try to move him he just walks and pees, any sugestions? i bought him a treadmill to run on and he loves to run on it because i live in florida and most of the time during the summer its to hot.
@freakyvenni No, Iv been doing lots of reserch and every source of info says never to let them off the leash in a unfenced enviroment or they will just go for a run and well.........you wont be able to ceep up , Google it
i got my husky when she was like 3 and the people before us didn't train her and she jumps are fence if she isn't chained up and can open doors..but if she gets out she just runs and goes and plays in the field across the street and then comes back in 5-10 minutes.
I have 2 huskies and they dont take off uless they are unhappy with their environment. Very true that they are willfull dogs though, my male is quite stubborn, but is so loving and snuggly. The female is much more obedient but is less snuggly. If you want a husky, you had better not be concerned about having hair on EVERYTHING :-)
A bored Husky is a destructive Husky!!! They need a lot of walking!! Also - as far as training them - good luck!!!! Of the top 50 breeds of the AKC - as far as intelligence - Huskies rank #49!!!!!! THEY AINT SMART - or as he said "They are independent!" I trained mine with potato chip bags they hear that crumble (after they escape) they come running otherwise they dont listen at all!!!
BUT LOVABLE, kind, sweet, playful are a Huskies good traits!!!
Huskies are bread for work, warmth and gentleness - NOT intelligence!!!! I have 2 Huskies - and if you are looking for love and playfulness - Husky is your dog!!!!!
i have a husky he have 7 weeks i take out every and walk whit him but im training lil bit but is hard he never listeng just lilbit cant somone give me som tips ?
if you cant wake up during the night to take out your husky buy a crate and put the husky in it at night because they dont like living in their own crap basically. eventually they'll learn to hold it in. huskys are GREAT dogs. Eric your an amazing trainer and you've helped me alot. thx :)
Hey, can you help i rly want a husky and where going to get one but i know they love to sled is there any alternative becaus there's no snow in the summer :s
I've had mine for 12 years and this is the third one I have had. All of mine were free from the pound because people don't understand that they need to run.
First rule, exercise every day . A bored huskie is not good .
They love people and are great buddies but they are all energy.
Gentle leader training collar will help with the pulling.
That's the best HOW TO TRAIN A HUSKY VID on youtube! The others are just BULLSHIT! This one really tells you about huskies.... BUT IT IS NOT COMPLETE!!! There are a lot of other things that you have to know BEFORE you buy a husky! Otherwise YOU and your dog will be very unhappy one day...!!!!
i bought my siberian husky yesterday.. hes still a pup. and i wanna potty train him asap any tips?... hes so adoroble.. drove 5 hours 1 way and 5 back to pick him up.. it was worth the drive! :)
i know what you mean about husky i got one thats was about 3 weeks old male paid about 500 for it and its white and brown with white/bluesh eyes and right now he is about 4 and half months old and its worth the money i paid for it i dont regrete it i get alot of attention from women when i take him out he so full of energy they dont stink like other dogs and very play full but overall they are a good company everyday take hime out make sure your dog hass all shot b4 taking him out 1/2 greatday
well i got my husky recently too at 7 weeks old now hes about 9 weeks and they pick up fast.
Just praise him every time he pees outside and my only problem is him peeing at night i cant really control that unless you can wake up 1-2 times during the nigh to take him out.
Also these guys love attention give him alot of attention and make sure from when hes a little pup that he knows your in charge and not him.
thx mine is about 9 weeks too.. yeah im potty training him right now so far its going great... but i still have to put a traning pad inside for him incase im at work or sleeping... i live in an apartment and 1 of my problem with my husky is, he likes to dig.. he already ruin my carpet... so there goes my deposit money :)..
i just got a husky, he's all white. He's almost 3 months old and he knows sit, down and paw haha,...this guy's right though it's ALOT of work to get him to come to me when I want him too luckily im off for a month from school so i can focus on training him
my husky have heared perfect untill he was an year old... Then he got his own head, and if i call him he looks out what's the reason why i'm calling him... Chap is very clever!
I want to buy Husky but the problem is that i live in a not so big house and we don't have back yard. The Husky will be depressed or he will become normal with the enviroment? tell if i should take Husky or not
If you can take it on a long walk a few times a day and go to dog parks and such it should be fine. If you don't have the time, then get a different breed.
just do it thats what we did you wont regret it they are so smart and so loving they learn really really quick they are easy to train problem is the get bored with trick and them just refuse to follow commands cause theyre "bored of that one" lol just make sure you have a very very well fenced back yard they are the ultimate escape artists!!
a friend of my dad has a husky (female one) i have a year old male husky when i let off mine from the leash it just runs away :D when he calls his dog it comes right back to him... he told me that you have to show the dog that he depends on you, not that you depend on him
well i can walk mine off his leash if i tell him to follow then if i there is a open field and i tell him to go he will run in the grass only..at 1st he would run and come back with out me calling him to make sure it was ok...i can go 100yards wile he in sit stay and yell go home an he go home a sit on the porch...and he is only 7 months but turn 8 on the 20th...just work with ur dog every day and remember that good dog bad dog shit only works for so long
Your dog is still only an puppy and hasn't reached the independent adolecent stage yet. Many, many owners find they have young huskies who are perfect with their recall but when the reach 1 year to 18 months they suddenly stop listening. Just something to be aware of.
no, its not bad training, its just how the breed is. Think about it, the siberian husky was bread to work in the winter but also take care of it's self in the summer. high prey drive and independence is vital for survival. This is fine in the wilds of the tundra but problematic in more populated areas. Unfortunately no amount of training will overcome instinct with 100% sucess. Train, train, train, but never trust 100%
I hear you when you talk about them kinda wandering and it's hard to get them to come back. this one guy let his dog out and him and his gf had to chase it down cuz he just would'nt come huskies seem fun but they are so hardheaded
ermm a friend of my father has a husky( female) i have a male one... when he calls him he comes back (maybe cause its female??? and mine is a male fool who thinks he's the big job :D )
i know huskies suck for protection but how do u make one aggressive? and does anyone know if an electric collar would be good for getting ur dog to come back
And I would suggest to anyone NEVER use a shock collar. All they do is hurt the animal. They are no good for training.
Please look into positive reinforcement training instead. Our huskies are not aggressive, but they have stepped up to protect me when it has been warranted.
They live positive reinforcement and they are great dogs
You want to make your dog aggressive? That's very irresponsible. People like you shouldn't be allowed to own a dog, or any animal for that matter. Work on growing up first!
my husky puppy is giving me such a hard time with potty training. he's 8 wks old and we only had him two days... so i shouldnt be this discouraged but i need some advice. my bf wants to keep him outside on a chain but i'm not comfortable with that. he needs human contact and love. plus my 3 cats havent come out of hiding! i dont think this will work out. :(
I have a GSD/Husky and he looks just like a GS but the personality and Energy level of a Husky, I never tought it would be so hard to train him, I adopted him, and i tought he would be more of a GS, but Boy was i Wrong, i Love him, and try to train him and Run him everyday, If you dont have the time and energy to own one, DONT! by the way.. if you have bike you can buy a dog-leash attachment for it.. Husky's love that.. trust me.. its his favorite activity..
we have a apuppu Husky almost 3 mos... She is so smart she is potty train and No problem on letting her to go on the crate ,I think the previous owner did a good job on her,,,,I teached her now about the Sit and stay... and thanks for this video atleast now I knew that i need to focus to call the puppy come.... 5 stars...
Let me guess your one of the idiots out there that don't do research on the breeds and just pick a dog cuz it looks cute.Your a great example of a fucking idiot dog owner.
no actually i knew how they where and ive tried everything but my dog will not listen i trained my other husky and my pitbull just fine sounds like your the idiot for coming on youtube just to talk shit to other people im sorry u dont have a life..
It's most lickly your bad husky is more independent and dominant which your other dogs are more calm submissive.Plus you methods of training isn't the best either i bet.Let me guess you tryed to train him with treats? If you did it's the worst training method. You want the dog to listen to you without any treats in your hand. Why don't you just bring him/her to obedience training classes. If you still have problems after words then get a better trainer.Good luck,i must apoligize also.
well at first i did try treats just so she could at least listen a lil cus she would without them shes just a bad husky but i have kept trying she is a lil better the only thing is i cant take her to classes because they dont have any here im stationed at camp humphreys south korea
Im working on that on myself housebreaking a husky is hard, when i first got my husky i thought it was great the he when on the paper fresh out the store i dident have to teach him it, the hard part is getting him to go outdoors, i would say may some free time for just that take him out as much as you can praise him alot for going outdoor and say no when they go indoors also use names so the dog know what you want like good boy you went poop and no you poop and my new shoes lol. it works
It took my siberian almost a full year to fully understand housebreaking...first she figured out she was supposed to do it outside, but didn't know how to ask...so we had to be on her like glue until we taught her to bark/talk at the door.
ok question i have a 15 week old husky and when i first got her i would watch her 24/7 she never messed in her cage and she goes to the door however I'm trying to get her ready for when i go back to work so I'll leave her down stairs in the kitchen by herself for prolonged periods of time during the day when i used to watch her she would go tot he door and i would let her out however know that I'm not watching her she goes in the house.
sorry ran out of space, I'll even let her out for prolonged periods of time, I'll let her back in go back upstairs and come down about 15 minutes later to a mess. I either have 2 choices at this point figure out how to get her to realize that she can't go in the house or leave her in her cage for 8 hours a day while I'm at work cause i know she doesn't go in there. what would you guys recommend and second how did you train your dog to bark when it wants out that would save me a lot.
I'm training my Siberian Husky to become my next guide/service dog. You are so right about the energy! But she needs to have a lot of energy to do the work she does. She will listen to me, but if she doesn't want to do what I ask her she will talk back to me while she's doing it!
one of mine is already certified as a service dog. She is a wonderful animal and since getting her my husband has been able to go off all his depression meds. The problem we have to work on now is she hates other female dogs-- this started about a month ago.

NOPE!! The AKC gives three tests:
1) How many repetitions to learn a new command?
2) How many commands can they remember?
3) How long can they remember commands?
Of the top 50 breeds:
#1 is Boarder Collie
#2 is Poodle

you don't train huskies you earn thier respect. u have to have a special connection with ur huskie. I love this dog so much
PhillyAssassinX 1 year ago
if you cant wake up during the night to take out your husky buy a crate and put the husky in it at night because they dont like living in their own crap basically. eventually they'll learn to hold it in. huskys are GREAT dogs. Eric your an amazing trainer and you've helped me alot. thx :)

Hey, can you help i rly want a husky and where going to get one but i know they love to sled is there any alternative becaus there's no snow in the summer :s
tottoke5 2 years ago
Use a bike, rollerblades or a skateboard. Anything with wheels that they'll be able to pull with you on it. They love it and it's great exercise.
Jamie12823 1 year ago
I've had mine for 12 years and this is the third one I have had. All of mine were free from the pound because people don't understand that they need to run.
First rule, exercise every day . A bored huskie is not good .
They love people and are great buddies but they are all energy.
Gentle leader training collar will help with the pulling.
WSmith1952 2 years ago
My Husky comes, sits, stops, but will not stop pulling on the leash! lol.

That's the best HOW TO TRAIN A HUSKY VID on youtube! The others are just BULLSHIT! This one really tells you about huskies.... BUT IT IS NOT COMPLETE!!! There are a lot of other things that you have to know BEFORE you buy a husky! Otherwise YOU and your dog will be very unhappy one day...!!!!

well i got my husky recently too at 7 weeks old now hes about 9 weeks and they pick up fast.
Just praise him every time he pees outside and my only problem is him peeing at night i cant really control that unless you can wake up 1-2 times during the nigh to take him out.
Also these guys love attention give him alot of attention and make sure from when hes a little pup that he knows your in charge and not him.
kangarooo25 2 years ago

I want to buy Husky but the problem is that i live in a not so big house and we don't have back yard. The Husky will be depressed or he will become normal with the enviroment? tell if i should take Husky or not
Giakoumis669 2 years ago
If you can take it on a long walk a few times a day and go to dog parks and such it should be fine. If you don't have the time, then get a different breed.

huskies are easy to train, cuz i had one before and he always came back when someone called his name.
he was hit by a car RIP :(.

dats true but what he means is their not as easy as a yorkie or a german shepherd but their smart ass dogs so they will learn quick
CaSsieHuSkY 2 years ago
That's why you never let huskies off leash, and you don't let them escape your yard.
Xaqtly 2 years ago
he was on a leash, except my cousin was holding his leash and she didnt hold tight enough and he ran off.
lolz1666666666666 2 years ago
a friend of my dad has a husky (female one) i have a year old male husky when i let off mine from the leash it just runs away :D when he calls his dog it comes right back to him... he told me that you have to show the dog that he depends on you, not that you depend on him
shigalbigal 2 years ago
well i can walk mine off his leash if i tell him to follow then if i there is a open field and i tell him to go he will run in the grass only..at 1st he would run and come back with out me calling him to make sure it was ok...i can go 100yards wile he in sit stay and yell go home an he go home a sit on the porch...and he is only 7 months but turn 8 on the 20th...just work with ur dog every day and remember that good dog bad dog shit only works for so long
b5150b2012 2 years ago
Your dog is still only an puppy and hasn't reached the independent adolecent stage yet. Many, many owners find they have young huskies who are perfect with their recall but when the reach 1 year to 18 months they suddenly stop listening. Just something to be aware of.
cec20500 2 years ago
im starting to see what your talking about...i have to start to work with him more now
b5150b2012 2 years ago
is that bad training?? just aquestion ive just gotten a usky 2 month old
paddeee2 2 years ago
no, its not bad training, its just how the breed is. Train, train, train, but never trust 100%
cec20500 2 years ago
ouch..i would cry. especially raising it from a pup
OddYears 2 years ago
I hear you when you talk about them kinda wandering and it's hard to get them to come back. this one guy let his dog out and him and his gf had to chase it down cuz he just would'nt come huskies seem fun but they are so hardheaded

ermm a friend of my father has a husky( female) i have a male one... when he calls him he comes back (maybe cause its female??? and mine is a male fool who thinks he's the big job :D )

i know huskies suck for protection but how do u make one aggressive? and does anyone know if an electric collar would be good for getting ur dog to come back
leonskennedy69 2 years ago
Why would you want to make any dog aggressive?
And I would suggest to anyone NEVER use a shock collar. All they do is hurt the animal. They are no good for training.
Please look into positive reinforcement training instead. Our huskies are not aggressive, but they have stepped up to protect me when it has been warranted.
They live positive reinforcement and they are great dogs
tjkinkead 2 years ago
Electric collars are horribly inhumane and about the worst thing you can use with a husky. Google "No Shock Collar Coalition" for more information.
AgilityMalamute 2 years ago
well its not illegal so how is it inhumane...there not humans
b5150b2012 2 years ago
true
Shad0wSquirrel 2 years ago

Let me guess your one of the idiots out there that don't do research on the breeds and just pick a dog cuz it looks cute.Your a great example of a fucking idiot dog owner.
scarfaceXtc 3 years ago
no actually i knew how they where and ive tried everything but my dog will not listen i trained my other husky and my pitbull just fine sounds like your the idiot for coming on youtube just to talk shit to other people im sorry u dont have a life..
PrissyNdamien 3 years ago
It's most lickly your bad husky is more independent and dominant which your other dogs are more calm submissive.Plus you methods of training isn't the best either i bet.Let me guess you tryed to train him with treats? If you did it's the worst training method. You want the dog to listen to you without any treats in your hand. Why don't you just bring him/her to obedience training classes. If you still have problems after words then get a better trainer.Good luck,i must apoligize also.
scarfaceXtc 3 years ago
well at first i did try treats just so she could at least listen a lil cus she would without them shes just a bad husky but i have kept trying she is a lil better the only thing is i cant take her to classes because they dont have any here im stationed at camp humphreys south korea

Im working on that on myself housebreaking a husky is hard, when i first got my husky i thought it was great the he when on the paper fresh out the store i dident have to teach him it, the hard part is getting him to go outdoors, i would say may some free time for just that take him out as much as you can praise him alot for going outdoor and say no when they go indoors also use names so the dog know what you want like good boy you went poop and no you poop and my new shoes lol. it works
KamidakeRed 3 years ago
I read that back and i know there alot of type-O what can i say my husky is driving my nutz lol.
KamidakeRed 3 years ago
Does anyone know how to housebreak a husky or how long it takes?
TamaDrummer782 3 years ago
It took my siberian almost a full year to fully understand housebreaking...first she figured out she was supposed to do it outside, but didn't know how to ask...so we had to be on her like glue until we taught her to bark/talk at the door.
BaileysMom02126 3 years ago
ok question i have a 15 week old husky and when i first got her i would watch her 24/7 she never messed in her cage and she goes to the door however I'm trying to get her ready for when i go back to work so I'll leave her down stairs in the kitchen by herself for prolonged periods of time during the day when i used to watch her she would go tot he door and i would let her out however know that I'm not watching her she goes in the house.
dracowing14 3 years ago
sorry ran out of space, I'll even let her out for prolonged periods of time, I'll let her back in go back upstairs and come down about 15 minutes later to a mess. I either have 2 choices at this point figure out how to get her to realize that she can't go in the house or leave her in her cage for 8 hours a day while I'm at work cause i know she doesn't go in there. what would you guys recommend and second how did you train your dog to bark when it wants out that would save me a lot.
dracowing14 3 years ago
100% right, this guy knows what hes talking about! 5 stars.

I'm training my Siberian Husky to become my next guide/service dog. You are so right about the energy! But she needs to have a lot of energy to do the work she does. She will listen to me, but if she doesn't want to do what I ask her she will talk back to me while she's doing it!

Tundra too! gotta love em!

one of mine is already certified as a service dog. She is a wonderful animal and since getting her my husband has been able to go off all his depression meds. The problem we have to work on now is she hates other female dogs-- this started about a month ago.
