I love Garrison he is an amazing bass guitarist, I don't dig the whole "oh it's fusion man it's allowed to be weird and wacky" as a justification for sloppiness.
I can't give this guy enough respect, to me he epitomises a way, a style, an ability to play out there on the edge, out of conventional comfort zones of playing and listening. In my limited and maybe narrow opinion, I think there is perfect order in the construction, and yet an exhilarating freedom to allow others playing room to manouvre, man, if I could play (bass) that well and could play with HH,I would just love the chance to push the boundaries, he does it to great effect.
First off, let me set some of you guys straight. The reason that this particular version sounds noisy is because you are hearing the mix from a very large stage and auditorium. Check this performance againsts the original recording, and you will hear that the original recording is also very busy. It's just the mix and the natural reverb of the room that makes this performance sound busier. Trust me, it's not. These musicians are kicking ass. This is a very difficult song to play.
Went to high school with that drummer who you've never heard of. Name's Richie Barshay and he's probably the most solid drummer I've ever played with in my life. Perfect time and a great ear. And he's a great guy as well. Haven't seen him in years since he's been touring with HH.

JUST can't fuck with this kind of shit mang, WOWSERS, this shit is LEGIT though... Regardless of all the wannabe "critics" n shit, forget it, it's masterful A-Z... it's almost like some of you just like to see yourselves comment and sound smart and musically inclined... THIS STUFF IS TIMELESS!!!!!!!!!! WAY WAY AHEAD!
Man, all you haters are crazy. This is some rippin' playing here. It starts off a little shaky, and some of the synth sounds could be more interesting, but this is some heavy stuff going on, my brothers. And sisters.
its jazz man! music is going to evolve over time to become something new, especially with herbie. If you want to talk about a musician that has evolved with/through time, he's the guy.
the music is what it is, don't get hung up on personnel or sound, just listen. that's all you can do, unless you're playing with him!
Don't like it either, noisey and don't like the drumming much. Honestly what I've of him with Vinnie, I don't like that much either, Mike Clark was by the far the best in this situation!
y'see to me there is an INCREDIBLE groove going on that surpasses the Thrust and Japan versions... I love this band.. moreso than the original headhunters...
For me it sounds too hectic and there is too much fuss. It's noisy. You can argue that it needs great art to produce such a harmonic chaos. But remember: Funk is what you don't play. And they just play too much all over the place.
Well... I've been a keen musician for 22 years this year.. I have a rhodes (and I've had 3), moogs, all that... some people like nostalgia but times move on and I'm real happy with Herbies modern band.. I'm glad he doesn't want to live in 1973. Also, Actual Proof was never a straight funk tune, it was among the first tracks combining bop/swing/funk/fusion together in a song... its doesn't sound Sly, James Brown or anything out there really now does it?
I'm sorry but you having been a player for however long has nothing to do Herbie. I dunno, I saw this band two years ago at the Hollywood bowl and I felt they were a bit noisy too. Herbie's one of the greatest, and Matt Garrison is amazing. I can't groove on Loueke, ever. And I'd never heard of the drummer, he's groovy yea but not like Mike Clark or Harvey Mason.
my point was not to say how great I am (I'm not great at all!) but more to point out that there is a generation or two of jazz fans who just seem to think its all about gold pants, wah wah pedals and afros... music has to evolve.. otherwise we are *always* looking back and never going forward... yeah Herbie was graet in 1974... to me he's even better now... ymmv
I think Herbie gets great players in his bands. BUT! Herbie is SO strong as a player, that he can play over anything, and any way someone plays his songs...I think he just goes with it. This is kinda free for all...It's got drive, but you have to shape music and players. Great or otherwise...
@orangefunk You speak the truth mate!!! All players ability grows and changes over time. As is the case with the great HH.... Ok, I personally think that sometimes Herbie's playing can be a little eccentric but can you imagine having played so many notes, played so many different ways over such a long career??? The most outlandish dissonant stuff is gonna sound as plain as a root major chord to him. The guy is in my mind THE most important musician of the 21st century!!
I agree, personally I prefer Marcus Miller or Nathan East on bass and Vinnie on drums. Sometimes this drummer sounds like he doesn't know where he is. Matt Garrison seems to play too much on this version as well.
Funny, because my friend who is a six stringer pro bass player reckons Garrison plays just fine on this... theres another version with Nathan East which might float your boat more...
Nah... to me this is just as good as his Tokyo 1975 version... esp with Richies awesome drum style...
I have been a Hancock fan for 25 years and this is the first time since the 70s I have really rated Herbies output... this band is awesome.. way better than the Vinne/Nathan band..
well, apologize for my chioce of words in the comment before - but what I meant is, that it is too artificial. The instruments are digital and the basist is too much of a solo player. I am old fashioned that's why I prefer the original version withthe great Paul Jackson:)
again I don't really understand... there are some people that seem to wish we were locked in a box called 1973 playing Arps/Clavs and all that... I'm not one of those guys... I own a rhodes (I love it!) and have owned things like Solinas too... but I prefer Herbies modern approach...
well maybe your're right but what i can hear is that bass is a little bit ungroovy, comparing to Paul Jackson's playing. But it's probably just a question of preferences.
you're right. i don't know why that version with vinnie wasn't hot. vinnie is my hero but maybe that's not his style? i didnt know that was possible. it's like he should have been more busy with the groove- it was too rock not enough funk/fusion.. but you think that would have been vinnie's thing.

Most of what passes today for music, would trip over itself many bars before 1:27 where Herbie shows you how it's done!

I actually prefer this drummer to Vinnie. Vinnie plays too much in the pocket and while technically perfect, he is actually a little boring.
This guy has got a bit of an edge to him.

Totally agree. I think taste wise this guy nails the song too. Vinnie overplays everything live.

Rofl, Paul Jackson simple? He was one of the inventors of how Matthew Garrison is playing on this.
lorenzini 5 years ago
I recently got hold of a version of this song by Herbies last touring band with Nathan East and Vinnie Colaiuta on bass and drums respectively
the version they did of this was very sleepy
no energy at all
basically this version I uploaded turns every version I've heard inside out, its a close tie with the Flood 1975 version I think.
PJ appeared on a mid 1990s CD of Takehiro Honda if people want to check that out.

you're right. i don't know why that version with vinnie wasn't hot. vinnie is my hero but maybe that's not his style? i didnt know that was possible. it's like he should have been more busy with the groove- it was too rock not enough funk/fusion.. but you think that would have been vinnie's thing.
