in a way, the title does play off of the aspect of angels. neon genesis implies a new begining (which is eventually brought about via the angels destruction) the word evangelion itself can mean gospel, or in some cases it can mean messenger. angels are the messengers of god.
don't argue about something made by a suicidal, manic-depressive. just make up your own plot for the last couple episodes.
