  • Fun Fact: At 1:35, that's Milt Kahl, doing the voice of Ferdinand :)

  • Anyone else have this on VHS as a child along with Willie the Operatic Whale and Lambert the Sheepish Lion?

  • Is this movie political (i.e. against bull fighting)?

  • "Splendid-O"?

  • how old is ur grandpa?

  • This cartoon is one year older than my grandpa :O

  • y esta claro que no vieron Madrid en su vida....

  • @TheBepep You can say that again.. Ferdinando? Splendid-o? Esta bien que en ese tiempo su publico estaba centrado en EUA pero esto ya fue mucho

  • patetica vision de Espana... sin ningun tipo de documentacion... es increible que ganara un Oscar... lamentable

  • this was made in 1938 ????

  • What was the point of this story?

  • @05brassmonkey Without violence, Ferdinand won.

  • @dgoins6 just like late mr. Mahatma Gandhi preached...the principle of non-violence. (en.wikipedia.XXX/wiki/Mahatma_gandhi#Nonviolence)

    ("XXX" = "org")

  • am i the only one that heard AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH fuck! at 6:11? i guess i got a dirty mind

  • @zomb3kill3r I also heard that xD

No you don't got a dirty mind although mine is maybe a little bit :/.

  • Who was brought here after reading Stephen King's "Rose Madder"?

  • How can someone dislike something like this? This is pure classic, best of Disney. :)

  • On a lighter note....THAT MAN'S A FRAUD. HE DOESN'T NEED AN EYEPATCH AT ALL.

  • Shaddap. it's a cartoon. Crying about it only makes PETA come closer to banning these things, and then our childhoods will be robbed of more Disney Rad-ass awesome lore.

  • I like it. Found this from watching "The Blindside" on November 13, 2011. Sandra Bullock is so good.

  • @BlkKnt69 same here

  • I'm reading Sean Griffin's queer reading of this short right now for class. Super interesting, I can totally buy the reading.

  • So the moral of the story is: Spanish women are hot. Spanish men are funny at best

  • @Goma2 juuust wait for their temper....

  • so...we meet again 240p

  • awwwww, i wonder if he's still sitting there now ^~^

  • aww this was one of my favorites when I was a kid I am happy to rediscover it

  • Nevertheless, it's the (not entirely accurate) pacifist message along with follow-your-heart that is the dominant interpretations. Some point out the animal perspective which is interesting. Perhaps you could read in some homo or queer theory in this as well, I don't know. Personally I simply love all characters of this story; the (Disney) matador, the "men in funny hats" and not to mention his "understanding" mother (despite a cow?!). True love.

  • There's so much you can read into this if you want. I even got friends wanting to make the poor bull a junkie with his big stash in the "favorite tree" where he can sit and "sniff" the stuff away from his credulous mother (until the unexpected bumble-bee that is).

  • Cartoons were way better way back...

  • At 6:35-6:37, if anyone becomes so furious that they even pull their hair out, can they really go bald in real life or is it only in cartoon? Why would they want you to go bald when you even pull your hair out?

  • super

  • I love this, but 1938? I don't think so

  • My moms fave cartoon. She would often say "And he would just sit and smell the flowers." Looking back I now know she said it when I was screaming my head off. LOL. When I was done she (woman was a saint) then said "patience is a virture (?) child." Always stopped me cold even though I had no clue what it was. SO using that on any kids I may have.

  • I feel as Ferdinand! Since I was a child... :3

  • OMG! I remember this! :D

  • #1 All time favorite cartoon.

Might just have effected me more than I care to admit!

  • ferdinand is gay !

  • 6: 10- 6:12 Does he say the "F" word?

  • But not ferdinand...

  • I used to watch this all the time... I haven't thought about it in years though

  • What song was used for the intro of this, after it displays the title?

  • 6:21 kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • Is Dick Van Dyke the narrorator of this episode?

  • @SUNSHINE21480 I believe it is Mr. Don Wilson.

  • Yeah Ferdinand was gay bool.

  • Who else is here because of Elliott Smith?

  • Comment removed

  • Who noticed that on the "el toro furioso" posters they were selling "hot dogos" and chocolatos churros?

  • Im here because of the blind side

  • I really don't want to know where Ferdinand was stung to make him bust through a wall.

  • Ferdinand.. the OTHER bull..

  • 0:55 "But NOT Ferdinand," he had BETTER things to do, LOL

  • I ll never get tirde at waching this Ferdinand, I lovE him!

  • I remember watching this at a very young age and loving the story. So sweet. And the book, celebrating 75 years, has been reissued. I bought it for my daughter and it is one of her favs. Thank you for posting this video!

  • why/how would anyone dislike this story and video?

  • Sad thing is, if a bull did this in reality - They'd stick even bigger harpoons in its back to try and get it upset, and if that didn't work, they'd kill it on the spot. Disney helped aid in the tourism of bullfighting, by showing it as a contest of brave men and mean bulls, when really, it isn't. It is about getting a bull to withstand as much pain as possible and still do what they want it to do, only to die in the end. Only if a bull does exactly as wanted does it live in the end.

  • @Illiasc they don't live... they always die... and i never care when some guy gets impaled on a bull's horn...

  • @blackblood No, they can indeed live. Called "indulto" or pardon in English, a bull may be pardoned just before death if he performs well enough. Look up "Javier Conde indulto" or "Zalduendo indulto" or "Cuvillo indulto" or even "Barcelona indulto" on YouTube - A bull survives a bullfight at least once a year, whether it be in Spain, France, or Mexico. . . . There are quite a few videos of such pardons.

  • @Illiasc what horrible bastards... i think france does fake bull fights too where the bull doesn't get hurt and people just laugh at some scrawny guy being chased around... i don't understand why anybody would want to watch a bull fight... people are stupid

  • @blackblood Spain does it too. It's called "Recortes" - It's actually a very neat event to watch. The bull isn't harmed, though likely upset, and it is basically a few teams of men who individually go up and perform stunts with the bull. (jumping over them, pole vaulting, dodging them, etc) They do it with cows, too, except with the cows the objective is to take off or put on a ribbon on each horn. The cows are FAST and smart! And yes, they've got horns. . . Very well armed horns.

  • @Illiasc someone always has to ruin good shit by whining about how unfair it is. your just another animal rights quack artist. go join PITA you douche

  • @basspliff187 Someone always has to complain about facts by spelling things wrong, that they can instead ignore. And for your information I'm no animal rights activist, I'm a farmer - One who actually is a bloodless bullfighter, as bloodless bullfighting is legal in America.

  • @Illiasc fuck you dude, u came on a disney video to vent and cry about your half baked hippy farm beliefs. i bet you farm organic pears like the queer you are. and BTW, bloodless bullfighting is not bullfighting, its bull playing. the 80's called they want their AIDS infested farmer fag back!

  • @Illiasc at least they have a chance to fight for their life, your country fatten thousands of bulls every second just to make bigmacs,so unless you are a vegan, that in that case i apologize, you have no right to say that this is torture when those bulls live as kings until they have the last chance to fight of fighting and being pardon if thy prove they are brave enough, while you torture those animals during all his lifeand treat them as objects just because you like the taste of meat

  • @hyuhyuuyh Not a vegan, no, and in case you never read my other comments on this thread, I understand completely. I've studied bullfighting for about 5 years now, follow the news on it each season, and do "bloodless" bullfighting where it is legal here, so trust me, I understand completely the difference. I just meant to mention that the film portrayed a lie. As for cattle butchered for beef - I raise and eat my own. Much more humane ;)

  • @Illiasc of course what you see is a lie, they are cartoons for kids from 1938,what do you expect?,realism and blood?,look there is another where there are 3 pigs that talk, but Ive never seen anyone complaining

  • @Illiasc: Gutsy, I'd say. I'd never be able to eat an animal I saw grow up and gave a name to ;_;.

  • As this is my favorite children's story, I am sad they felt the need to change the bull ring scene.

  • This is so darling, I loved this as a child.

  • GLEDAM OVO SAMO ZBOG BOZE

  • I had never heard of this short either .. and yes, this book was indeed my favorite story too!! I this it's the epitome of the Taurus nature too

  • ディズニーで映像化されてたのは、知りませんでした!!!有名なお話だったんですね。大好きです、この物語。ラボライブラリーで知りました。

  • @marilynroo when didyou first watched this?

  • coolz

  • The blind Side

  • You wouldn't get away with this withy any other bull.

  • Seriously how could you possibly dislike this video

  • FYI

Ferdinand is voiced by Walt ,and Milt Kahl voiced Ferdinand

  • Such a lovely story!

  • Did the matador just say f**k when he tore up the red cloth?

  • Sounds like it to me. Aaahahahahaha!

  • I named a 1989 Ford Taurus after this character! Think about it - taurus=bull!

  • I loved this cartoon as a child - along with the original Casper the Friendly Ghost. Kids, especially boys, don't hear enough that it is good to be gentle and kind. I searched for it years ago for my grandson but couldn't find it. Go You Tube!

  • Huh. The women look typically Spanish, but the men are gross caricatures of Mexicans. -.-

But that's Spexico for you. Still a classic short!

  • ME AND FERDINAND GOT A LOT IN COMMON.

  • ¡¡Excelente dibujo animado de Disney!!

  • @Matilde1957 ojala quede igual de excelente la pelicula basada en este cuento por Blue Sky Studios

  • I don't see anything about it being gay

  • Ok someone explain to me how this story is about being gay? Please !

  • @MrFrtysvn a raging bull deep inside, who one day sat his ass on a prick and unleashed his inner rage. i'm kidding, i don't even know who said it was gay :/

  • aww what a classic! love it!

  • 6:09 : awwww f*ck! :O

  • 6:30

  • i love it when idiots flip out when i explain that this story is about being gay. love this story.

  • @gabedom420

    how so?

  • I love mama cow's look at 1:47 !!

  • @KindredFolkVT ahahahah :D so true!

  • ... What did the matador just say? "Awww, fuck!"

  • @CaptainSiberia Go to 6:10 and listen for three seconds.

  • Like with real life bull fights I was hoping for the bull to kill the matador

  • lol wow i havent seen this since i was 5 ^_^

  • This is seriously a thing? "Ferdinand" was by far my favorite story as a kid. When I was like three I could tell the whole story verbatim because I made my parents read it to me every night and I just memorized everything. Yet I've never heard of this cartoon. Oh well. Nice surprise for the day.

  • @therush1892 You have said exactly what I was going to say :) I thought this was my secret little book from my childhood, not a "classic" :) Mind,I have to say I have taken ferdinand as my example of how to live life........:)

  • ferdinand's gay.

  • @TheSandyManson: If gay is a synonym for awesome, then I agree. If not, then don't criticize.

  • awww so cute cant beleive that Toy Story and Tangled came from thise really

  • another american cartoon that mixes spain and mexico... why am I even surprised ¬¬

  • @borico62

This is from 1938. Have any contemporary examples?

  • I lolled at his mom's cow butt.

  • 2:11 That won't end well.

  • i love it. just so happesn my name is ferdinand and this is my favorite book! well i love how disney made this cartoon too. nostalgic feeling from my youth. thanks for the post.

  • This is cute- I think the moral behind this one(and most Disney animations had one) is to be original and be yourself. Just because you may be a "bull" dosen't mean you have to be mean and chase matadores(lol). Follow the beat of your OWN drum!

  • So cute

  • I love ferdinand!

  • this animation probably won't reach any higher appreciation than in Sweden.

  • Awww i remember this. I watched this wen i woz a kid. I lurrrrv Ferdinand <3

  • Awww i remember this. I watched this wen i wen i woz a kid. I lurrrrv Ferdinand <3

  • Another one of my favorites. Can I have the file for this?

  • My kids love it when I read them this book, This isnt the same way I remember the voice.

  • 6:09 , "aww, fuck!"

  • I love the mom's face when the guy goes "Even though she was a cow..." xD

  • dude sniffing makes him feel good

  • if ferdinand was human and lived in the city he would sniff coccaine (now-a-days) but i remember watching and havin the Walt Disney's Timeless Tales!

  • a swedish christmas tradition since the stone age

  • @WasteOfAmmunition what is it?

  • @TheEL337dude In Sweden, we watch one hour of disney cartoons on christmas eve, if you didn't know that's the date we celebrate christmas. It's mostly parts from disney movies such as snow white, robin hood and the jungle book, but also short ones like ferdinand and a some what censored version of the donald cartoon "clown of the jungle" where the final shooting scene has been cut away :P

3 PM, christmas eve, sweden is watching disney all together :D

  • @WasteOfAmmunition what a nice tradition :) here in Lithuania we hold a special emphasis on Christmas eve. dare I say it's more special for me than the actual Christmas day! that cozy waiting, beautiful tranquility, exchanging presents on the eve. cheers and happy new year, mate!

  • my favorite as a kid!!!

  • @guppylover28. Yeah me too. I'm watching blind side again. I decided to search for it cuz i wanna understand the story more:)

  • Starring Walt Disney as Waluigi as the Matador!

  • at 6:12 I could have sworn he dropped an f-bomb.

  • I looked this up because my son loves to smell things ( flowers, candles, purfume, shampoo, if it smells good he wants to smell it) On top of that my son is a taurus which is the bull, haha. It always reminds me of Ferdinand.

  • At 4:07 the girl with the pink rose (and some other of the girls) looked like snow white

  • I have never heard of this story before, I was watching the blind side and heard of this and decided to look it up. Love it!!

  • doar anul si spune deja multe. desenele ptr.copii din ziua de azi unt niste "schimonoseli"care de multe ori nici nu stii ce reprezinta, iar subiectele sunt deplorabile. pacat ca nu s-a mai nascut un disney.

  • I looked this up because of dusted.

  • I remember watching short cartoons like this as a kid and beeing happy, not that new crap kids watch today...

  • I looked this up too because of the Blind side movie

  • but NOT Ferdinand!

  • This bull is gay.

  • hah, love the slight exaggeration on the word cow xD

  • So cute! Love it :-)

  • i looked it up because of elliott smith

  • @villasixx Me too.

  • @villasixx who the deuce is Elliott Smith?

  • @NorTheRat was a very talented singer/songwriter and he had a tatoo of Ferdinand in his arm

  • @villasixx I looked it up because of the movie 'The Blind Side'.

  • @villasixx Who is Elliott Smith?

  • I can relate..

  • aww i used to have this on vhs when i was a kid and was reminded about it because of "The Blind Side" classic

  • @bestkindofanswer same here... i love that movie!!! :3

  • Now why would any bull want to be in a bull fight? If there smart enough to understand what the sign says I think they would also know what happens to the bull. Oh and I love how they have Spaniards looking like Mexicans. lol

  • @xaviervonrottie It's a metaphor of the war. The bulls want to go in the fight just because of the fame even knowing that they could get kill, same way people want to go to war thinking they become heroes, where in relity they're only going to kill or get kill. That's the importance of a dandy as Ferdinand: he has found an happy way of living and he'll never accept to take part in a brutally fight. But other people can't understand...

  • I just read that the narrator was Don Wilson, the sidekick on the old Jack Benny Show. He did a great job. Memorable film.

  • @AdeleinTN: Oh, yeah, that does sound like Don; I'm sure they got it right. It also sounds to me like Walt Disney himself voiced Ferdinand's mother, at about the 1:30 mark on the video... similar voice to the one he used for Mickey Mouse.

  • ferdinand is awesome i watched this a lot when i was little

  • Spain is not in mexico u ignorant americans

  • Kalle Ankas Jul :)

  • Although the setting and protagonist is extremely well done, it is the people who impress me the most. It's delightful to see Disney blossoming into their own and it's obvious why they had won the oscar.

  • Ferdinand: my friend Svala's alter-ego.

  • Ok, seriously, when the mother speaks at 1:22

"Now Ferdinand, why don't you play with all the other little boys and 'fuck' your head"?

I swear she says that; I just laugh so hard LOL

  • @holem Buck

    Buck your head

  • @holem

    not even close bro

  • I haven't seen Ferdinand since I was small. Wow, he hasn't changed a bit, kidding. That was cute: his mother, who was a cow...hilarious!

  • This was before our politically sensitive world, guys. The caricatures are for humor, not for malice.

  • Elliott Smith

  • Maybe the flowers are used as a symbolism for crack cocaine?

  • 愛花的牛

  • how come youtube didn't delete it because of copyright issues? :)))))

  • 4:36 It's Waluigi !!! XD

  • 6:56 everyone knows that bullfighters are pussies.

  • The five guys with weird hats were always my favorite. Other than Ferdinand, of course.

  • yup, The Blind Side reminded me of Ferdinand. It took sometime to remember, though :)

nice symbol for peace and nowadays for protecting these creatures from crude fights. No wonder the film was illegal in Spain in 40's Hope it's not the case anymore.

  • Aww... Ferdinand is a lovely bull... all bulls in Spain and Mexico should live hapily like Ferdinand...
