@StumptownBoy ..Gordon is a truly great artist with a fantastic catalogue of songs ,,,however James Taylor legacy will be much more profound and lasting, both are superb ..but James Taylor wins hands down [ in my opinon]!!!!!
@StumptownBoy I'm and American and I agree with you; Gordon sings lyrics more to my liking than Taylor. I am always irritated by people who feel it is necessary to make comparisons of artists when, in fact, they are both great. It's like comparing one person's love experience to another person's, it just can't be done and means absolutely nothing. We just saw Lightfoot and his band last Sunday at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania near our home and they were perfect.
Lightfoot is WAY underrated. I think he's a better writer and performer than Dylan, although some call me nuts for saying so. But even some ardent Dylan fans agree with me that Lightfoot is a much better singer --
Saw this wonderful singer live playing in the bay area some ten years back. I have been listening to his music for 40 years now. Never tired of listening to him.
Really? What makes you say that? I'm not getting that vibe.
I think Stromboulopoulos is a gracious host and interviewer and as an American who wasn't introduced to him until I went to college close to Canadian border, I have to say I prefer him to just about every American late night host I've seen. The one thing I didnt like about this video though is that Stromboulopoulos seemed like he missed the point Lightfoot was making about not worrying about death. Otherwise good.
Love this man's body of work. I was supposed to meet him at a private event in Memphis when he became ill. I'd still love to meet him someday. Being a Hammond / Mellotron player who knows. Thanks to the Hour for uploading this interview.
Absolutely love his music. Most recently, saw him at the historic Majestic Theater in San Antonio... February, 2009, I think. GREAT performance in such a beautiful, unusual venue.
@andyofinbar true. He is very open to other emerging musicians, such as myself, back in 1993 with Paul Stookey, when I opened for them. I shoulda listened and stuck with Folk Music. As far as Folk Musicians go, Gordon Lighfoot is one of the best.
Gordon Lightfoot is the finest singer-songwriter on the planet - Dylan is a close second - but no one can write songs like Mr Lightfoot. Check out his last album, Harmony, an absolute gem. He's written some incredible songs, all the popular ones we now and love but check out Biscuit City, Dreamland, Anything for Love... songs that will last forever.
i have walked through my life with gordon lightfoot and his music by my side .even after 15 + years i automatically know the lyrics to all his songs.Gordon L is implanted in my soul.......Thank you gordon ,,,very.very much!!!!!
@umacks I know how you feel.Gordon's music has always filled our home and marked my childhood. When my Dad was too tired to read us a bedtime story he'd sing us to sleep with Knotty Pine or Daylight Katy. Thanks for everything Gordon.Miss you Dad...
The Krayolas love Gordon Lightfoot. The San Antonio rock 'n' roll band have a brand new single called, "Gordon Lightfoot." The song has received radio spins on KNBT-FM "Roots and Branches with Ray Wylie Hubbard," SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio "Kick Out the Jams with Dave Marsh," KSYM-FM's "Jim Beal Show" and KEDA. "Gordon Lightfoot" was also featured on KLRN-TV "Conversations with The Krayolas."
I have been able to see Gordon Lightfoot twice, one in the early 80's and just last week. He is a great singer and songwriter and I really love his songs. The box set is great. Hope he is able to keep touring for a long time to come.
Gordon has always beena great song writer and entertainer ever since his first preformences at the Orillia Opera House, he is the pride of Orillia (my hometown, and his) Long Live Lightfoot
My mom used to play his records almost every day when I was very young, so his music always really takes me back. I don't really listen to it much but maybe I should. I heard one of his songs in a Burger King last night and it reminded me how much I like it. Funny how things like that can happen. Great to see he's still around.
For all the songs he wrote about his unaffectionate, cheating first wife, I'd love to hear an interview asking him about her now. Many of his best songs would not be here today without her.
Just got back in the house from Gordon's Show at the Ryman in Nashville (My 10th time to see him). Oh my goodness - the MAN still has it. The voice not as strong, some higher notes have been dropped, but my goodness, what a musical/lyrical hero this gentleman is. Hard to believe I have been listening to him for 42 years now. WOW! Gordon, I love you man - God bless you!
Saw him in Atlanta Friday night, for the first time. What a privilege to hear Canadian RR Trilogy live. I wonder if he would sound better if he'd lower the key. Those high notes were painful.
Doowopdan - I wondered that myself, as far as dropping down a bit, but I think that would make it even more difficult to hear him. Not sure his voice has the strength to project the lower range well. The amazing & beautiful thing about it is, regardless of how he sounds, his fans love him & are VERY forgiving. They accept & appreciate him for whatever he can give, regardless. Here, his apology for his voice was met with shouts of "You sound great", "You sound beautiful", etc. Just keep singing!
Good point. What you describe is really touching. I felt the same "vibe" of love and appreciation in the air at the concert I went to. I'm a big fan of the 50s era, so I'm kind of used to concerts by artists who are past their peak. The fact that he wrote those songs and brought them to us in the first place, is enough.
I love Gordon but I hate Stroumboulopoulos. I always hear people saying good things about him but I can't stand his show. I'd rather the power go out.
Such grace and humility. This guy is legendary and he just wants to keep working and taking care of his family responsibilities. I love being Canadian!
Well, technically, the U.S. is down there. Line of lattitude measure North/South position b/w poles. Canada/US border is 49 degrees N with Canada being above, and U.S. being below 49 deg. N
What a gentle and humble man. I like it when older artists like Gordon still do live shows because they are so skilled at what they do, they make it look easy. You feel like you are listening to an old friend. When I listen to people like Gordon and Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, who are such great writer/composers, it makes me proud to be Canadian.
I've been listening to Gord for over 45 years, and his music is still the soundtrack to my life. Few people have the ability to open their souls and sing about what's really in their hearts as Gord does.
Gordon, you will never know how much your music meant to me, a displaced Canadian girl in the middle of Africa in 1975 ... to come across your music and be reminded of home ... you will ALWAYS be my Canadian icon. I've been to 3 of your concerts, spanning 25 years ... I owned so many of your LPs I lost count. You're Canadian gold.
"If you can read my mind" is a mind alternating song, for me. When I hear it, it transcends me to a through the looking glass place. Unbelievable lyrics, sung by a god gifted musician. Viva Gordon. God bless you man.
I saw Gordon in Chicago in 1973 at the Auditorium Theater. It still to this day is the finest concert I have seen. He carried the show for three hours with a short break. There is no one out there willing to put it out there like that.

Gotta give it to our neighbors to the north. You guy's certainly do produce some GREAT music. But please KEEP YOUR DAMN SNOW UP THERE WILL YA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gordon always did his own thing, Sundown took care of that dribble,, his Sundown and the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald rocked every one in the rock world. This guy is a legend, no doubt.

Gordon always did his own thing, Sundown took care of that dribble,, his Sundown and the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald rocked every one in the rock world. This guy is a legend, no doubt.

It's true, George is a bit lame with this one. Ask more about the songs and the craft of writing.

Canada's greatest Canadian. Period. With no disrespect to other great Canadians.

Definatly not our greatest....... Like tommy douglas did so much more. And no disrespect to Mr.Lightfoot either. But it's a little unfair to say greatest.
