  • I still dont know how the doppler radar is different to the normal weather radar on a plane. Iis it simly in the processing of the data in accordance with this "algorithm"

  • I agree with the writer from 6 months ago. Doppler weather radar has been in use for a long time. MIT Lincoln Laboratory, funded by the FAA, used Doppler radar to develop a microburst detection algorithm long before NASA got into this. Lincoln Lab helped develop the specifications for the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar used specifically to detect microbursts. And all of this was done in the mid- to late-1980's. Since the microburst algorithm came out, there have been no US fatalities from MBs.

  • This is a great video but the title is a little misleading. Doppler radar was being used by weather services (mostly USA and Canada) since the 70s. This article is more about how a small doppler radar was designed to be used onboard an airplane. Because of advances in technology they now have doppler radar units small enough to be used on small private aircraft.
