What a surprise! That one of the most ravishingly beautiful and stunning performances of this movement I have ever heard should be that of Wilhelm Kempff, who I always associated with the Austro-German repertoire (Mozart, Beethoven, etc.) My admiration for Kempff grows with every recorded performance of his that I hear...he was truly a musician extraordinaire.
I keep coming back to this.woullike to see his programmes. There is a book that has many programmes of the gone.He was a fabulous chopin player. This is beyond belief ! Never see anything but his Beeth in the stores.Must be othe radio .Must find.I cant believe people don't talk about this wonderfuly expressive and fantasically shaded performance.I bet his Skyrabin would surprise. He feels&THINKS!!!
@ThePVGS1 I like to give the benefit of the doubt sometimes. Maybe they enjoy classical music like you and I but just didn't care for that particular piece.
Very pretty, best piano concerto I have ever heard in my whole life yaahs. :) I really like these videos that are like slide shows. :D I am gonna play this later. Yes yes I am. XD Well, anyways. Beautiful is probably too weak a word anyways. I don't know much vocabulary.

Contrary to widespread, illiterate custom, the word "Classical," when employed in its strictest, epistemological sense, signifies any species of fine-arts composition which coheres with Plato's principles for aesthetics. More recently, all of the development of modern Classical polyphony, from Florence, Italy of the early fifteenth century, through the 1896 Johannes Brahms' composing his "Four Serious Songs," defines a corresponding phase of musical progress to be of a specific Cantor Type.2
This piece is soooooo ROMANTIC....no words can desribe it. It's like high grade honey coating your soul..making you feel so right and alive. God Bless ya,Chopin. You are one of a kind!
It is so enjoyable to to read the thoughts, expressions, emotions of those who so deeply feel the power, the strength, the sensitivity and the beauty (just not enough words or the right ones) of strains of music which touch so deeply the soul. Islands we are, but only for the moment...
Thanks for posting this. I never realized Kempff played Chopin so beautifully (I always associated him with Beethoven). Do you by any chance have the first movement to this as well?
@johngalderton : they changed it to at least 15 minutes, some clips last even longer, so maybe you could please PLEASE upload the first movement as well? This is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you. I didn't know Kempff to play Chopin as well so I'm thrilled!
He was in love when he composed this. A 17 years old kid. Damn, whatever we'd write, It'd be rubbish compared to such a masterpiece. We're not equals.
I think Chopin is the most lyrical of the composers. That, I think, is his claim as a composer. Not as grand and sublime as Beethoven, nor as intensely clever as Mozart, Chopin is just the most lyrical. His melodies flow through time like velvet!
I understand what you mean, but I think this "idea" of generalizing the styles of composers like Mozart, Chopin, by saying one is more lyrical than the other can create tones of counterexamples. For example, one could claim that Mozart is more lyrical than Chopin by pointing out the 2nd movement of his 21st piano concerto. Both Chopin and Mozart were masters of lyrical harmonies, melodies, but I think there's no point in saying one is more lyrical than the other. It is very subjective.
Your reference to the 2nd movement of that concerto is certainly a fine example of Mozart's lyrical side. I will give the example of the slow middle section of Chopin's 'octaves' etude. I don't think any other composer could have thought to write something like that. It is so extremely personal!
I totally agree with it, everyone is different in their own way, Mozart's Requiem is a masterpiece, Beethovens Ode to Joy is a masterpiece, so emothional, so great, they all are very lyrical, very and so deep... and they are all a greatest composers!
brilliant work by Chopin. How DOES he think of such piece to compose?Chopin doesnt sound like any composer, not even a hint of any other composer.Kempff is the most lyrical pianist I've heard.what an amazing world class pianist!
A pianist, it is my opinion that music is 'invisible dance' and dance: 'visible music'. Retirement frees one to do so many things. Keep on dancing. It need not be strenuous. Slow, controlled movements and daily creativity will bring out the 'music' that is in you. I too have retired. But I have learned to dance 'my' way. And it has helped me discover many things in piano playing that I had not thought about in my youth.
A violin teacher arrived across the hall today to teach a young boy there. His instrument had such a rich, luscious sound that carried out into the street and made my heart sing as I toddled off to dinner (not quite dancing yet) on this summer's evening.
This is exquisite - I didn't know that Kempff had recorded this work. It sounds like a live performance (perhaps a radio broadcast?) Is the rest of his performance available?
It is a live performance dating from 1959 from Prague. I will post the 3rd mvt in a few days, also Kempff live performances of Mozart Cm Concerto from The Hague and Schumann concerto live from Munich.
Chopin was the most beautiful writer of all. No one else amounts to his love in my opinion. I wish i could put as much of my love into music, i write and write, but it doesn't have that one element. Some day though. Also, i love kempff. Kempff is one of the most expressive pianists ever.
thats sooo incredible ! he was great
