The problem is not the driver, cuz accidents will happen (everyone has probably scraped a curb or a parking bump at some time). Problem is the awning was improperly designed. It needs cross-bracing, a very powerful stabilizing technique. You can see an example of cross-bracing when you look at a fence gate with a diagonal board on its face. That board keeps the gate from sagging like a parallelogram. If the building code did not require cross bracing, maybe it needs to be changed!
