I.e. each of Cloud's slashes with the V.6 is so much heavier than a slash from the assembled Fusion Sword, guarding was rendered obsolete. (And in case you're wondering how I can know about the guard break; I've played this sequence frame-by-frame... Yeah, I'm that pathetic.)

Also, yes, Zack was there because Cloud needed a little pep-talk from the other side after Sephiroth blocked his Omnislash, went One Winged Angel and scewered him 7-8 times in mid-air.
