there,s nothing wrong with matched. its better if any thing becuase you gett a better sound out of your left hand. even know it looks cool, there's not a big need for it. so stop bashing these people about match grip.
@deanskis thats cause its on vid, in actuality they don't, we switched to dynasty, the bigger set, all they are playing is out usual school cadences, nothing very original, they were just screwing around it was many years ago, before i was even in highschool and on the line
The style of grip a drumline uses should be decided on either how they were taught or what they can play with better. For snare I prefer traditional but there's nothing wrong with using matched.
That is ridiculous. Its looks retarded if you aren't used to seeing it. But if you don't have students or an instructor that can play or teach proper traditional technique, it sounds terrible. Not to mention can begin the process of carpel tunnel.
Most high school lines in my area use matched in fact I have my snares play matched. It is easier to clean with students going from bass to snare, because the technique is basically the same.
Im the guy that played snare in this video.... you hit it right on the money kjac18, our tech was a quad player and did not know traditional, and our snares played quite clean with matched grip. People can bash matched all they want, but our line was taught that way, so thats what we played
Im the guy that played the quads on the right... thanks to everyone for the nice comments and for encouragement. negative comments arent really productive but if it makes you feel better about yourself its ok with me. I dont really drum anymore and I know Im not an absolutely outstanding drummer but I had a lot of fun back in high school so thats good enough for me :-)
you flamers piss me off....just because you don't like the fact they are wearing sun glasses or playing matched grip, doesn't mean that drumming is gay...seriously guys just play, don't hate
nice job.. watch the shoulders and playing zones. The tenor player on the right - watch your little fingers on those sweeps. You're letting go a little bit :D.. otherwise, excellent.
Hey man, watch your key stroking and handzones on the keyboard and the hand on the right-watch your little finger, your letting it slip on those C's and M's :D..otherwiese, exellent.
Thats because the guy on the left has marched tenors for 3 or 4 years of High school, and is now on Miami's drumline, and the guy on the right plays snare. And our drumline has now switched to trad!
lol im the drummer on the right and yes my buddy is MUCH better than me at quads but i thought i might get props if i let you know that i never marched quads. I marched snare and I'm sorry if you dont like matched grip and neither do I... but our line played matched and since that is what I had to play, I was better at that than traditional
Clearly there was a difference of abilities. As far as playing matched on snare... do what you gotta do. If you're a tenor your not gonna probably have the chops to play traditional. Especially not that young.
I just don't like when there is no creativity. The piece was overall pretty simple and straight forward. Ripped off music from Blue Devils' "Hey Dick" cadence. Take an extra day and write and play something thats actually your own.
Im LDS, my friend aaron is not. it was a stake variety show. i played a quad solo at efy last summer but the guy that filmed it failed to post it on youtube which sucks because it was pretty sick.
pretty good worst finale ever though... "hey lets impress them with our behind the back moves and clean rolls!" "ok! how should we end the show?" "how else? a really lame sixteenth note rhythm!"
thanks jerk haha. more like two guys with horrible quality drums. we just got new drums this year actually. i like it how you refer to your line as if you own it?... who do you play for some high school? lets see your video????
Try percussion caption head and arranger. But you can see me playing...all you need to do is put Blue Devils 88, 89 /cadets of bergen county 1990 into the search field and hit "search". there you sample my ability.
well, Aaron (Not Bob Bob Law) is a freshman at Miami, OH, and made the tenor line there. and Ben(Bob Bob Law) played snare for 3 years in our high school marching band and now plays sousaphone because of matters beyond his control. and both are amazing drummers, and neither are "dorks"
What a bunch of horseshit. Quality of sound has little to do with the drums themselves and more about the approach to the drum, listening and cleanliness. Shit, VK in 95 had excellent quality of sound and they had 10 year old drums patched together with bolts and duct tape. Perhaps your boys dont know how to tune them either. LOL
our drums are patched together with duct tape and jacked up bolts. every competition we go out to, at least one tenor head breaks(and these are 7 years old BTW). and they don't tune them, our directors leave the tuning to our techs.
you should get rid of the amateur "techs" and get some professionals...equipment maintenence is a quarter of mastering the instrument...sounds like your band director is more like a control freak band dictator.
we did. we dropped both of our percussion techs and got new ones. 2 of which have been on our line before, and 1 who has not(to my knowledge) and we tune our drums better now
only Ben is mormon, but yes they are both very talented. they play on our school drumline, aaron plays in winter drumline also and ben plays hockey. aaron is a senior and ben is a junior. i hope you enjoy this, and if you like stuff like this, come to the MEPA drumline competition in dayton this saturday? maybe sunday. it will be awesome, and these two represent Sycamore Drumline!
Just keep to tenors your snare grip was. Well. Bad

you can tell he doesn't play snare a lot
because he doesn't use traditional
or some marching bands use match grip no clue why they just do.
going quads to snare is easy because u know some beats and rudiments just take away multiple drums
from snare to quads is f -ing hard
yes it does look retarded
