  • man i love that old logo

  • thumbs up if you think the guy riding the unicycle has skill!

  • this commercial a little bit funny

  • I miss that paint scheme, the gold tail with the big red meatball

  • @white93taurusgl "The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail"

  • The businessman jogging runs like a girl

  • Truly

The best Airline I have ever flown....to bad ual just bought it,its down hill from here....

  • Is anyone else bummed about Continental merging with United?

  • @howzitgoin1970 Kinda. But it will be United Airlines with Continental's logo/livery. A couple years ago we lost Northwest to Delta, then there was Eastern and Pan Am which both folded in the 80s/early 90s. In Continental's case it's actually a merger, not a take over, or the corporation going belly up. Still, many of the iconic airlines from the mid-late 20th century are fading away. From the good ol' days of American air travel it seems we're just left with United, American, and Delta.

  • Rofl

  • what does the song sayy on 07 ,????

  • 0:10 talk about multitasking

  • It was a fun commercial - but liked the "Feel the Difference Pride Makes" better!

  • very cool commercial; even as a kid in the 80's i remember the "spirited" airline commercials running, they were cool. thanks for the post!

  • UNITED SUCKS BALLS

  • UNITED SUCKS ****!!

  • @continentalb737800 you know what sucks more you do i want to be pilot on united united is best areline in the world

  • OMG! I love this ad! I put it in one of my FSX videos!

  • i love Continental Airlines!!! But now they're merging with United....CRAP

  • Love the song. Sounds like a 70's TV show theme.

  • This Commercial Sounds Like the Old old TWA Commerical

  • to that last clip at the end with the narrorator, "see ya next fall"

  • *LOL*

    Very interesting.

In this day and age, it's best to NOT fly Contenental (or Delta and especially NWA.)

  • it is funny when you thunk enough and have a good sense of humor

  • It's ironic that both United and Continental were founded by the same man (Varney), both had hubs in Denver, both had huge fleets of tri-jets, and both airlines had liveries and graphics designed by Saul Bass. Kind of funny that the merger is happening after all these years. *sigh* But I'll miss the tulip. :-(

  • The "old" Continental, along with Western Airlines, are the best ever IMHO.

  • Too bad they're merging with United.

  • Dude... It looks like a dick... This fucking commercial should be banned.

  • No, I was an American Arilines / Braniff person in those years.. I did hate their commercials though, even then, vs what American put out like "The On Time Machine" and "Something Special in the air".. Braniff's commercials were over the top in production and humor as was Southern Airways. Check those out on Youtube.. hope I didn't offend anybody..

  • This Commercial Sucks then and now.. why show this piece of shit?

  • @TheMemphisSlim guessing you didnt fly continental.........

  • I took a Continental DC-10 to LA years ago. Beautiful machine.

  • Some Commerical Is So Funny

  • lol awesome!

  • Commercials back then were funny for airlines :D!!!!

    Continental rocks

  • My music playlists for each of the last 100 years include fun clips like this. Any year of music is available at the click of your mouse . . . . . . . . . .

  • @chkjns What a brillant idea man! I should try to build up my own time-based library as intersted as I am in history, its all neat. Never thought of the historical angle on collecting to have a sample of the styles,. music of every year. Thanks so much

  • Bob Six didn't found Continental, but he did build it into to a (once) great airline.

  • Robert Six didn't found Continental. Walter Varney and Louis Mueller founded Varney Speed Lines in 1934 (Pueblo-Las Vegas-Santa Fe-Albuquerque-El Paso). Robert Six bought a 40% stake in that company in 1936 and, one year later, changed the company's name to Continental Airlines.

Renaming something isn't the same as founding it.

  • There liviares are better now than that orange color

  • Well this meatball can go away because the raw (red) meatball is the Lorenzo era. The burnt meatball can come back since that was Bob Six in his last days of running CO and the airline was in its best days.

  • Do any Continental employees from the 70's remember this riddle?

    Why did United sue Continental?

Because the Proud Bird With the Golden Tail was shitting all over the Friendly Skies...

  • @bixbyglaser Speaking of which, United Airlines has just acquired Continental Airlines. For that, the soon-to-be-newly-merged airliner will bear the United Airlines name. In addition, United will retire its long-running 'tulip U' logo, typeface and livery for good and replace them with Continental's own. Pretty cool, eh? I thought the new airliner will take on the United name, logo, typeface and livery.

  • @dondonp12004 I think not keeping the UAL colors sucks. I like it better than the Continental colors.

  • @bixbyglaser I like the UAL colors as well, but I have never flew an UAL plane, just Continental. Respectfully, the soon-to-be-newly-merged UAL and its new parent company United Continental Holdings, Inc. will rule. Let's hope the new UAL would keep George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' as a musical underscore for new ads for the new UAL ending with its new advertising slogan: 'Let's fly together.'

  • Dear All,

I have some humble question about psychology and sociology:

    *Why do we love flying?

**How could we define the magic of flying?

*How could the magic of flying related to American Dream or American Way of Life"? (This is the believe in 60's to 80's)

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorms!!! :)

  • I think we (still) love flying because it represents, among other things, being able to transcend our earthly routines and whatever holds us back here. Today a plane reservation still represents (all potential headaches aside) an opportunity to escape. The American Dream means freedom of movement at the very least, and the airlnes smartly chose to capitalize on that in the 60s through the 80s. Now I think they have just taken the mas transit concept and added wings. Still love it though lol! :-)

  • we love flying because it's something we can't do naturally. there's something about being able to leave the earth that no other mode of transport can rival. that would also partly explain the magic of flying.

it was related to the american dream because america was still great at that time and especially as segregation was abolished, flying would represent the limitless bounds that potentially any american could reach (although clearly planes are limited with how high they can go).

  • Man the seventies were the best for the airlines.

  • mmmmhhh Boeing 727 :)

  • @kenersej I worked on B727-200's when I was with Braniff 1979-1982.. The best airliner ever built.

  • When service actually mattered. Now it's a bus with wings featuring cattle car service.

  • "If you can't fly CONTINENTAL....." ohhhh that was good! I love vintage commercials where they seemingly had more freedom of expression.

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • Oh, that Boeing 727!

  • If you can't fly Continental, who's going to move their tail for you?

  • the man with the pogostick, has just arrived. ( delayed)

  • OH that is so freakin funny.....

  • After all these years? :)

  • LUUV It COntinental FReakin ROcks

  • Man....I actually remember that commercial.

  • It was a much simpler time when everything had a jingle.

  • United Crapways

  • The Bird with the Brass Ass!

  • Delta is the best. I hate US Scareways and Northworst and Ameriscam.

  • The old colors of Continental lasted many years, now their colors are not as pretty like ole days. I flew few times w/ continental. Actually Eastern is my favorite.

  • Talk about two of the worst airlines in the USA! united? american? They are trash!

  • You just hate flying don't you?

  • No, I LOVE flying, and I do it for a living. I just hate pathetic airlines like us airways and northworst.

  • Looks like I'll be riding my unicycle across the country!

  • oh my god

  • Brilliant, I remember this commercial song from when I was a kid! There was also a later version with more singers (some female) and the aircraft in the "beauty shots" was upgraded to a DC-10! Can anyone find that one?

  • If you can't fly Continental... just fly Delta!

  • Or Northwest.

  • Better said, NorthWORST. They SUCK big time, the worst after US airways

  • Northwest kicks ass. Sad that their mergin with Delta and becoming that...

  • delta just loves to merge to song airlines and now northwest

  • Comment removed

  • Song was a subsidiary of Delta

Airlines and was folded back into

main line Delta when (correct me

if im wrong) Delta filed Chapt. 11

    in 2005

  • Song was theirs to begin with dumbass

  • lmao thats was funny dude

  • Damn, those are some short shorts boys!

  • YAAAAAY thank goodness we still have continental airlines thanks to Gordon Bethune Horray!!!

  • cool

  • that was adorable!!!

  • Founder Bob Six wouldn't recognize today's Continental....

  • The "old" Continental Airlines (before Lorenzo) and Western (actually my favorite) are my two favorite airlines of all-time. They were both headquartered at Los Angeles, hasn't been any airline based out of LAX since...... what a shame....I can't say the name Lorenzo without my blood boiling.....I don't hate Delta, but they're not Western.

  • After the Old Continental and Western vanished, there were no airlines based at LAX, then came MGM Grand Air, made up of many ex-Continental employees....but it didn't last long.

  • Ah original Continental what a shame because its definatly not like that now! LOL However i think that we are forgetting that we are lucky to still have CO Good Old Gordon Bethune he saved CO (his book is called "From Worst To First!")

  • Remember...they really did move their tails for us!

  • lol

  • Fly Hith Come Hard in 70's...by Continental...

  • Egads...I worked for CO back in 1977 - I remember how I hated those commercials...they used to be headquartered in Los Angeles then...the good ole days. We had the youngest fleet in the sky consisting of DC-10's and 727-200's. They only started flying east of the Mississippi River about 1975 or so

  • YES, but weren't those the days?? I left Pan Am in '77 to go to Continental (Pan Am was the king of furloughs..that's why I left).

We ruled L.A. then, us and Western Airlines, remember the old interline parties back then?? How about the "Pubs" on the DC-10's to HNL. I sometimes forget just how special flying used to be.

I still love the industry but it's NOTHING compared to those days.

  • The only destination east of the Mississippi they flew to was Chicago, until 73, when they began flying out of Miami. Kind of like Western-they only flew to Minnesota, then added Miami in 76.

  • Support unions CO airlines ramp vote TWU!!!!!!!

  • Please dont flame me too bad...but the Continental Airlines of today is not in no way the real...original Continental Airlines...The Proud Birds With The Golden Tails"...based out of Los Angeles...sure, the Continental Airlines of today may be a great Airline to many, but thanks to Frank Lorenzo, the only thing that remains the same is the name...and thats it.

  • Now Frank is gone, and the new CEO turned them around. They have been J.D. Power and Asc. best legacy airline for sometime.

  • Of course not. We were what? about 9500 employees total back then? We didn't fly any further east than Chicago, and everybody knew everybody. It was really a comparatively small company then.

  • Besides Western, which is my ultimate #1favorite, the old Continental is my all-time favorite, too. Both headquartered at opposite ends of LAX. I can't stand Lorenzo either. His takeover halted the WAL-CAL merger, but I wouldn't have wanted that to happen either. It's all the other things that man did. Even though I was 10 at that time, I noticed the difference just after the merger with Texas Int'l. Sadly, the reason neither of these airlines exist anymore is simply changing times.

  • Well, if you fly JetBlue to the east, you should try Continental since the other major hub is in Newark, largetst airline to serve the NYC market...also, more of presence in the west than jetblue...and Continental does fly to SAN, ONT, LAX, SNA, and PSP...you just have to be flying east or to Europe...still the best service...

  • As for Continental Airlines; they still don't really exist on the West Coast. I fly primarily Alaska Airlines up and down the coast. I fly JetBlue primarily to the East. And I fly American Airlines to Japan. For local transportation between LA, OC and San Diego when I don't want to drive I take the Surfliner express train. But Continental Airlines just doesn't exist in SoCal anymore. Too bad, as they were a good airline in the 70's.

  • Their big hub in Houston is the EXCEPTION to the rule that they fly primarily east of the Mississippi. That was what I was getting at, and since I lived in Baytown, Texas for 5+ years back in the 1980's I know full well the location of the Missisippi River in relation to eastern Texas.

  • oh and Houston is west of the Mississippi FYI, no wonder you have no clue!

  • Do you all read newspapers?

Continental has won every major service award for the last ten years!!! True, small west coast presence, but you all still voted Continental as the best airline to serve the west???? Too bad for you sice you have to to carriers like United...

  • So I googled Continental Airlines, and it appears they do still exist and are actively in business. It appears they are mainly East of the Mississippi, with a big hub in Houston. So, if you really need to get to Houston, I guess Continental is still flying there. But for us West Coasters they don't really exist anymore. They did used to be a great airline though.

  • They are Still around.Flew with them first time I went to America with the Family back in January 1989 from Australia. Not a Bad Airline.Shame they pulled out of Australia in 1993.

  • I live in Southern California, fly a few times a year, and I didn't know Continental was still around either. Are they an East Coast airline now? I remember them well from 25 years ago though, especially their "We'll Move Our Tails For You" slogan.

  • do they really need to stress that flying is faster than unicycling or speed walking?

  • ...in a year when air travel was still under governmental regulation, airfares were higher in most markets than today, and less than 30% of the population had ever been on a plane--- yeah, they probably did.

  • at the end the guy is using a pogo stick

  • HA HA HA HA, now that's funny!

  • Continental was great - not too big, not too small. They could be counted on to provide direct service with fewer stops and layovers like the big guys, but still big enough not to cram you into puddle-jumpers. Are they even around anymore?

  • Are they even AROUND anymore??? What rock have you been living under???

  • we damn well are! World,s Most Admired Airline{Forbes} and winner of the J.D. Power Award 9 years in a row! i should know,i,m a Captain, been with CO for over 20 years. `

  • what a stupid commercial

  • Too Cool!!! Anybody have The one from the early 70's

"We Really Move Our Tails For You"?
