Joe Bonamassa has been performing for over 20 years and has tone baby! He started opening for BB King when he (Joe) was 12 years old! He now has 12 CDs (#13 coming out Spring '12), 3 DVDs (#4 coming out Spring '12), he played to a sold out crowd (5,000) at the Royal Albert Hall in London (5-4-2009--my hubby and I were there!!!), and he tours with his own band 8 months a year and with Black Country Communion for a couple of months each year. Joe is DAMN good and he's here to stay! Bad Kitty
In terms of guitar playing, Joe Bonamassa is carving out a sound that is quickly becoming noticed and familiar world wide among players, in his pick attack, note choice, phrasing, bends, ect. Only guys like Johnson, B.B King,Vaughan, Albert King and few others have done the same. John Mayer is directly channeling Hendrix/Vaughan when he plays his guitar.
In other words when Joe plays, you know it's Joe. When John plays, it could be a million people influenced by the musicians he listened to.
check out a vid of gary moore with albert king (SRV´s master) playing stormy monday... gary starts to make the P Green LP howl, with a tone and killer licks... The way he shreds it´s unbeliavable... then albert (I think completely on purpose) after one particularly rough gary´s solo plays just a few notes, sowly, but with and impecable technique, precision and vibrato. Gary played 300 notes, albert 30... who won? all of us, that are able to enjoy such a beautiful music as the blues...
I´ve also my preferences. Joe is obviously amazing. Probably the best player alive in this moment. That doesn´t mean he is better than Clapton. Cause in terms of importance and influence, come on... yardbirds, bluesbreakers, cream, blind faith, derek and the dominoes, an inmense solist career... He was the reason Joe picked a guitar in the first place... bt the point is... SRV, clapton, joe, jimmi (Both hendrix and page), BB, buddy, gary, albert, freddie, all are different.just enjoy the music
when your that good to be in these guys company ,it then just boils down to preference, for me SRV because he was so intense.,santana and peter green for feel, joe is probably the best at the moment ,but there are a hundred or so greats,it depends what style of music you like, some metalheads would say randy rhodes its all taste give it up comparing ,satriani and vai technically are unreal, its not everyones taste but you have to admire it all
First of all Eric Clapton is way better then Stevie. Now don't freak out. Stevie is one of my favorites but youre talkin about slowhand man. Second John Mayer is a great singer songwriter, and performer. Joe different level and music so youre comparing apples and oranges.
JOE BONAMASSA AND JOHN MAYER ARE HANDS DOWN IN THE TOP 4 BLUES GUITARISTS ALIVE...#1 ERIC CLAPTON, #2 BB KING, #3 JOE BONAMASSA, #4 JOHN MAYER! TOP 10 OF ALL-TIME...#1 CLAPTON, #2 SRV, #3 HENDRIX, #4 BB KING, #5 JOE BONAMASSA, #6 DUANE ALLMAN, #7 BUDDY GUY, #8 ALBERT KING, #9 JOHN MAYER, #10 ROBERT JOHNSON.
@MrFuckyouintheneck I am a HUGE Bonamassa fan and Blues fan...and If you have ever watched Mayer play the blues, he plays just about anything very well. Mayer considers himself a Blues guitarist and only plays POP music to make money and get girls...so the fact that he can do all of that extremely well makes me believe he should be on that list! Thats my opinion!
@MrFuckyouintheneck You're a moron. JM's an excellent guitarist. You're either too naive, immature or are holding some stupid grudge against him for being a better guitarist than you to notice.
@mattrags21 I disagree. Robert Johnson should be much further up that list - since pretty much every guitarist that came after him was influenced by him, either directly or indirectly.

I've seen JB a couple of times and leave every time wanting to sell al my equipment, lol. JM couldn't carry JB's pick. He's (JM) good but just listen. JB is the shit and I haven't heard anyone, not one person yet that got it as bad. 'Nuff said.
I've seen most of the greatest guitarists on the planet over the last 4 decades, but Bonamassa blows the rest of them off the stage - for sheer talent, technique, and FEELIN'!! He's really matured as a live musician in the last several years - not that he wasn't good before - and is a pleasure to see live, like no other artist. Have seen him a few times, and can't wait to see him again. Can't get enough!!
Re the John Mayer v. Joe Bomamassa "debate", JM writes some very lovely tunes, and plays well to accompany himself -- he wants to be a hotshot lead guitarist, though he can't measure up to Joe -- but he's good in his own right. JB is very soulful & heartfelt, though I must admit that extended blues guitar solos don't captivate me like they used to - and he is not the very best, though he is consistently good -- choose your favorites & don't diss the rest (unless they're posers, or suck) :)
Bashing other guitarists is just so stupid.. you don't like mayer? well neither do I! but as a guitar player myself i KNOW that guy can play, and I KNOW that he plays good. I just don't like it.. "got no real feel, no soul.. cry cry... so who are YOU to tell???" fucking idiots, every single last one of you saying such things!
and even tough I worship Bonamassa, he is definitly NOT the worlds new greatest guitarist... wake up! take a look around the corner.. and guess what.. THERE IS NO BEST
Bonamassa is the light at the end of the tunnel for the dark days of music we are in right now, all the new rock sounds the same and it doesn't sound good, rap is just talentless, useless, soulless, belongs in the sewer, ear rape. Joe is going to help bring REAL MUSIC back to life. SRV is looking down on the blues and is happy to see it being revitalized.
Its not about whos better, its about making music. im sure Joe doesn't give two shits about being better than John Mayer, he just wants to play his heart out....stop making the art and soul of music a competition.
All around on every front within the complexity of comparing one music giant with another, this boy wins out on all fronts. He can not only play endless lethal licks of the most blissful blues that intoxicates the minds of all that are mesmerized with such esstacy, as they longfully listen to his every rambling run, but he has a vintage voice to squall out the blues in such a way that it sends the crowds into pandemonium paradise. JOE IS THE MAN FOLKS, THE BOSS OF THE BLUES.
@allencollinsexplorer Maybe your opinion is right, but think that Mayer also has fuckin` great feeling. Bonamassa is better technically, but Mayer is good to. And Mayer`s voice is better than Joe`s.
I like them both ;) They have different tones and I love their tones.
They have huge influence in my play. THANKS THEM ;)
@allencollinsexplorer Mayer is just as good...JB is definitely a better guitar player but JM is not bad at all in fact JB isn't as good at some things that Mayer is really good at...JB and JM are very different...Just don't diminish the skill of JM because he's great too :)
@epicalice I agree completely. Yeah they both play the blues but musically, they have different styles. JM is more of a well rounded musician, crazy guitarist and songwriter. He goes out to different genres too. Joe was litterally born to play the blues. a real prodigy from the age of 4...
And I think it's funny how John Mayer's name is written all over this video's comments. i say respect for both musicians.
@guitardeez Mayer isn't a clown at all...JB and JM are two very different guitar players...don't bash JM he's the real deal when it comes to song writing and singing...He also is skilled in areas JB isn't...They are my two favorite guitar players today...
