The USSR team was made up of pros who had played hockey together for years and were very ruthless. The Soviet hockey team had also won five straight gold medals, so they were cemented as a dominant team. Also, the US and USSR played each other earlier in the year and the USSR won like 12-2 or something. No thought the US team could beat the USSR, but they did 4-3.
