My favourite Puccini opera the best sung I have ever heard is the 1962 Decca recording with Tebaldi/Merril/Del Monaco, all at their very best and an outstanding recording as a bonus. The 60's was the golden age of opera!
Silvia Sass was already suffering from voice deterioration when this video was made.
This opera may well be Puccinis "Masterpiece". The influence of Debussy is unmistakable, but Puccini adds even more wonderful touches.I actualy think that the opening of the musical "Wicked" was inspired by this opera.
I own this DVD, too. Cappucilli and Sass do good as the old sea dog and his guitless young wife, but Sass is so good I can't help but wish that she had been in more TV performances. I just saw Cappucilli's "Otello" opposite Te Kanawa and Atlantov; his big and dark voice fits better in Verdi than the handful of roles that Puccini wrote (not to say they're no good, of course).

Sass and Cappuccilli is made for this.
Most beautifully sung and with impressive acting.
Puccini was never darker, was never more verismo.
Great scenography too.

This is so beautiful. He is my favourite Michele, next to Tito Gobbi...

Musically the boat is rolling and pitching. The whole effect is one of physical and mental instability. I get a little sea sick.

Gianni Schicchi must be in the same category . Perhaps one should say Il trittico is his great masterpiece, but I'm not that fond of Suor Angelica.

This is a heart-moving scene. Great singing and great acting from both. I think Cappuccilli is excellent in this Puccini role.

La più bella scena di quest'opera crepuscolare, musicalmente raffinata e struggente... che bella sorpresa trovarla qui.
