Not to be technical, metromonthly, Mary Wells was the FIRST MOTOWN WOMAN STAR. There were two other women there at Hitsville BEFORE Ms Wells. Mabel John who signed with Gordy's Tamla Records in 1959 and Claudette Rogers of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles who "joined" the Miracles in 1957 and signed with Tamla Records also in Jan. 1959. Mary Wells signed with "Motown" in 1960. Motown Records was started on April 19, 1960.
You are very, very to have known such a beautiful, talented lady. I can only say that God gave me the gift of being a teenager during this song, every house party I went to out of every 3 45rpm, records played, 1 was Mary during my teenage years I danced myshare of Mary Wells. Thank you for the memories
@toliveanddieinthepeg oh don't you worry they are definately gonna come back. Music back then wasn't just about the latest shoes or the bling it was actuall about the talent. People back then actually spent more time to practice singing than dancing. That would come later.
Every time I hear this song, my mind goes back to when I was 5 years old, in my sister's room and she played this record a lot. Along with the Jive-Five "What Time Is It", and something by the Marvelettes I think it was "Someday-Someway".....I remember a lot of things when I hear music.
A queen by all means, 1 day we won't be on this earth, and our grandkid's will be singing this songs, Mary I love you and your much alive in my heart, body, soul, I remember as she was lyeing on her death bed, they asked her how she wanted to be remembered, her response was "like a human being" God bless her she's got all of my respects, It seems like all the good ones leave us early in life !!!
Sorry, for some errors. My comments about the insensitive response to why Mary did not become a bigger sucess was directed to Hotsheat2002. No one else. Sorry for the confusion. Also, my thanks for the aditional information about Mary was directect to Metromonthly. Again, Metro, thank you for providing useful information about Mary. And thank you for not being as cynical as Hotsheat. Rayclarkpalmer.
Mary Wells, Martha & the Vandellas, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Gladys Knight, Freda Payne....the true women of soul and Motown. What memories they have left us with.
I used to have all of the records 45's & 78's for all of them plus the guys too. Somewhere along the way they disappeared. The Ronettes, Temptations, Miracles, 4 tops...I miss that era.
Your response really shows a lack of sensitivity, history and knowledge. Marydid not die immediately after recording these great songs for Motown. She recorded briefly on the Decca and other lables. She still had the opportunit to become a major star like others that passed away untimely, think Minnie Rippleton.
Sorry for taking so long to reply to your posting. Thanks for the information about Mary Wells leaving Motown at 21. It is sometimes hard to realize that these icons of Motown were kids (literally) when they made these sounds. They and their music were so mature for their ages.
Mary Wells gave Motown "My Guy" which was basically Motown's 1st HUGE hit and put Motown on the map! Great gratitude to Miss Wells since we all know what Motown was able to do give us after that..Thanks Mary

damm what happend to the music now of days im only 25 years old and this music never gets old now its all about sex drugs and snoop dawg i wish music was as good as it use to be.
Omg I have 'Bye Bye Baby' her first record. A song she had written for a motown artist but when she sang it Berry Gordy asked her to record it herself and there was her first record. I adore this song though it was the first song I heard. Her singing STYLE on this reminded me a bit like a Denise Williams but there voices are totally different though but the style.
To me Mary Wells was great before Motown and then went downhill after the gansters at Motown got their hands on her- really. Sex was demanded from all their female perfomers- or they were ruined, like they did to Mary Wells.
Absolutely the best talent to come out of Motown. Too bad they screwed her over with Royalties. SHE was their first big star. RIP Mary. We love you!!!
Mary Wells was in fact "A Great Star". Her many adoring fans both young and old give testament to that with every compliment given for every performance of hers that's posted anywhere on the internet.
If you listen to "My Guy" and almost all the other cuts on side one of that album, it's evident that Motown had a promotional push in mind for Wells. But she left the company at 21 and the attention went elsewhere. Any guesses? :)
This is a great track of Mary from 1964. I have a great single that Mary did for Atco Records called "Dear Lover" in 1966 what a pity she left Motown, she could have been a great star.

Actually it wasn't written for a Motown artist, it was written for Jackie Wilson for whom Gordy had written several songs for.
