That is the slip joint with the riser running into it i think. The pipe (drill string) runs inside that. I'm not sure what north sea rig its from but all "floater" moonpools look a like
@kernowgypsy the slip joint stands on top of the riser section, its basically a huge telescope who compansate for the the moving of the rig around the riser's (easy explanation; the riser's its a pole of tube's going down to the bottom of the sea and are connected to the wellhead where the Blow Out Preventer stand's (BOP) (its a safety valve that can close the drill pipe or close the annular so you can stopp the pressure, or cut the drillpipe so you have a smaller way to pull up the drillstring)
