TOTALLY AGREE...have listened to this album THOUSANDS of times, SO GLAD to see this on YouTube! THANK YOU for sharing...listen, listen, listen to the album. HORNS are AWESOME on the album. Do it!
If you consider yourself a true Jimmy fan, and HAVE NOT heard his 1964 recording of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" from the "Virginia Woolf" album, FIND IT. It is his absolute masterpiece, IMNSHO.
We could probably say one man, J. Smith was responsible for thousands of groups around the world featuring the Hammond B-3 in their groups from the early 60's to probably the present day. What better fitting than the master who started an organ frenzy for years and years! THE TRUE MASTER OF THE KEYBOARD!
Love that shot of the crossover left hand - the contrast a between the head with the short chunky chords and letting loose is brilliant. He demonstrates the skill it takes to coax dynamic range out of an instrument without any volume control - staccato chunks in the quiet parts and the full out 9th chords when he really gets wailing - what style
When it gets to 1:58-2:54 that's when it really takes off. Lord have mercy, Jimmy Smith had that damn organ talking. I just like how he was doing his thing and the pedals was just getting louder.
This is classic. A great video. Love the close ups of hands on keys. The Hammond organ didn't start out to be jazz instrument. Smith was a true innovator. - a long time hero of mine.
Does anyone know if there was any footage from the LA 'Root Down' concert? For me, just looking on the back of my LP, it would be the perfect line up and obviously the tracks are amazing!
