She meets Black Beauty, who by this time is working for Jerry Barker, and she talks about how she wants to be dead instead of suffering constant and unfair treatment.

In the book, it's implied he is what we English once called a 'hunter', which is of no specific breed, but is bred for stamina, speed, stability and even temperament, as well as courage and the ability to jump well. Any breed or mix can be a good hunter and there is no greater compliment to a horse than the record of being one.

We can only guess at this though, but I suspect so because his brother, Rob Roy, dies in a hunting accident, and we are told he was a good hunter.
