Sunday June 26, 1988, the airclub at Mulhouse-Habsheim in Alsace/France had organized with Air France a low approach of a brand new Airbus A320 in landing configuration. Michel Asseline was the pilot in command of F-GFKC, Pierre Mazière was his first officer, when the aircraft overflew the airfield at 2 pm in sunny weather. seconds later the aircraft touched the tops of the trees behind the runway and crashed into a forest. 3 passengers died in the accident and about 50 injured.
The common misconception of Air France Flight 296 being an unmanned plane flown by a computer was created after TLC released a show without researching the crash appropriately, and mistook fly-by-wire as a fully automated system, not requiring pilots. This was the first ever crash involving an Airbus A320.
The captain stated in a post crash interview that his altimeter read 100 feet, despite this he felt the altitude was lower and he commanded the engines to full thrust. The engines did not respond in a timley fashion, an issue that had been encountered before on the Airbus A320 in fact this was only not proven because an AIRBUS official at the scene switched the flight data recorder for a blank one of the same type this was only found out several years after the captains imprisoment.
This was an Airbus A320 that crashed at Habsheim, Alsace, France on June 26th 1988. Despite what many people belive the aircraft was NOT being flown by a computer at the time. In fact it was being piloted by captain Michael Asseline, the aircraft was supposed to fly by at 100 feet but clearly it was lower.

@YTSMalumni2010 the plane was manned and if i remmember rightly im sure a little girl and the woman who tried to save her suffocated in the smoke, tragic crash though.
@CaRa9273 it was a witnessed test. the people had to be there to examine that the plane was truly going to be flown by a computer, nobody was on the plane thankfully
The plane was scheduled to perform a series of fly-bys at an air show. The plane was to descend to 100 ft. altitude with landing gear and flaps extended. The automatic go-around protection (Alpha Floor function) was inhibited for the maneuver. During the maneuver, the plane descended thru 100 ft. to an altitude of 30 feet and hit trees at the end of the runway. The aircraft was totally destroyed by the successive impacts and violent fire which followed.
The pilot allowed the aircraft to descend through 100 ft. at slow speed and maximum angle of attack and was late in applying go-around power. Unfamiliarity of the crew with the landing field and lack of planning for the flyby. Miraculously, only 3 aboard were killed.
@jimlp4u there were 2 pilots 4 other crew 130 passengers on board. 3 died.

@SG55OVCam Yes, actually. Judging by the post above, she was speaking a different language and says different words, but those words in english are "Oh yeah". jaajaja este invecil piloto estaba probando los sistema de proteccion del avion pero el pendejo no sabia que si le baja el tren de aterrizaje los sistemas se desactivan. por que obiamente si no se sedactivaran las protecciones nunca podria aterrizar el puto avion!!
@SG55OVCam i'm an air france employee,pierre mazière's(the co-pilot) son is a friend of mine,a flight attendant.
mr asseline's trial ended just 2 years ago, concluding that he didn't respect the flight restrictions("do not fly below 150ft") and that the engine's response(8 seconds) was to slow.
go to BEA's site to check it out,or google flight af296 to check it out by yourself
pax means "passenger" it's the official term,i did not invent it.
@SG55OVCam sure, statistic of abortion, you're just another punk looking forward to a YT duel...
here, have 20cts of a euro,i now it isn't much but it should be enough to buy yourself a bigger brain than the one you have right now (assuming you actually HAVE a brain)
The pilot was supposed to do a slow flyby at 100ft but came in much below that, at less than 50ft from the ground the computer assumes a landing is taking place so the planes fly-by-wire system restricted what the pilot could do from this point. The computer stopped him from increasing the thrust.
The people who think this was an unmanned test flight have heard "flown by a computer" and assumed it was autonomous.
@assuluto i have one question for you, if the computer assumes that a landing is taking place and restrict the pilots actions, that means tha in case of an intruder on the runway you're not able to avoid the accident? i don't think so
@zapayo This was 22 years ago! The issues have been fixed for a while.
There were documented design faults in the software which mean the plane's fly by wire system (this was the first commercial
demonstration if i recall) could incorrectly identify the planes altitude and fail to respond to thrust at low altitude, the pilot stated the engines didn't respond to thrust increase requests (so it crashed).
Search for AF296 report in google, the airdisaster(dot)com link explains it all.
when the plane goes too slow, it dips forward to prevent it from stalling. When the pilot put more thrust in, it was too little too late. He was going to slow and was too low.
atleast no people were on board. this could have been a real doozy if that was the case. thankfully this was merely a test for remote control operations
The facts of this crash are : Air France 296. 26 June 1988. Habsheim, France. 136 people on board. 130 passengers. Captain michel asseline Copilot pierre maziere 4 other crew. 3 killed About 50 injured. watch?v=Ea28bUTUfiM google air france 296 for the full story

@martinson WRONG
FoxAirfieldMaverick 1 year ago
@martinson This was not Flight 296, it was UNmanned.
SG55OVCam 1 year ago
@SG55OVCam incredible that people still believe it was unmanned...this is all due to a british broadcast which MISTAKENLY said so.
there were pilots on board, along with pax and cabin crew
jetaddicted 1 year ago
@jetaddicted No,it is incredible that people mistake this for Flight 296
It was an UNmanned test flight.
I do not know why you use the racist term, pax, it is not nice calling the ethnic minority names.
SG55OVCam 1 year ago
@SG55OVCam i'm an air france employee,pierre mazière's(the co-pilot) son is a friend of mine,a flight attendant.
mr asseline's trial ended just 2 years ago, concluding that he didn't respect the flight restrictions("do not fly below 150ft") and that the engine's response(8 seconds) was to slow.
go to BEA's site to check it out,or google flight af296 to check it out by yourself
pax means "passenger" it's the official term,i did not invent it.

@petisojavier the a320 was the first fly by wire commercial jet...
in a way the pilot's orders where "computed" but there were two pilots and about 150 people on board,3of them died.
i personnally know the copilot's son,i saw the captain with my own eyes
just google af296 to check it by yourself
stop believing that stupid british vid...and,once again:JUST FUCKING CHECK IT BY YOURSELF

Fue un error de los pilotos, calcularon mal la altitud para hacer un Low Fly-By, cuando notaron que debian ascender ya era tarde, pues al ir tan bajo no les dio tiempo aunque aplicaran potencia.
carlosh1392 1 year ago

The pilot was supposed to do a slow flyby at 100ft but came in much below that, at less than 50ft from the ground the computer assumes a landing is taking place so the planes fly-by-wire system restricted what the pilot could do from this point. The computer stopped him from increasing the thrust.
The people who think this was an unmanned test flight have heard "flown by a computer" and assumed it was autonomous.

MoJoAtari 1 year ago
@assuluto i have one question for you, if the computer assumes that a landing is taking place and restrict the pilots actions, that means tha in case of an intruder on the runway you're not able to avoid the accident? i don't think so
zapayo 1 year ago
@zapayo This was 22 years ago! The issues have been fixed for a while.
There were documented design faults in the software which mean the plane's fly by wire system (this was the first commercial
demonstration if i recall) could incorrectly identify the planes altitude and fail to respond to thrust at low altitude, the pilot stated the engines didn't respond to thrust increase requests (so it crashed).
Search for AF296 report in google, the airdisaster(dot)com link explains it all.

thanks i'll check it out, i thought you were talking about a320's in general :) THX for the answer

however you are mistaken in one point- no passengers were on this plane. this was an UNMANNED TEST FLIGHT: thank goodness indeed
MorfoAtarl 1 year ago
thank gods only 3 people perished here. it could have been so much worse. stupid french pilots and stupider control system.
zenrising 1 year ago
when the plane goes too slow, it dips forward to prevent it from stalling. When the pilot put more thrust in, it was too little too late. He was going to slow and was too low.
Pilots fault, not plane
