I've posted here before, but I gotta say this. I'm not a huge Frehley fan. He's often a selfish guy ("I," "me," "my")...That being said, can you imagine if he had done another solo record in late '80 to appease his desire to have a solo career, and then stayed in the band in '81 and forced them to do a back-to-basics rock album with this lineup instead of the Elder? How far could they have taken it? KISS could've remained so big that the non-makeup era in the 80s would've been unnecessary.
Actually Ace wanted to do a rock album but was voted 2-1 in favor of the concept album since Eric was a member of the band yet and really had no say in what they did. As much as I like some of the songs on dynasty/unmasked/elder I wish they had stayed in just rock music and not trying to follow trends.
The Unmasked era: God I was (and still am) crazy about this band! KISS are true legends, all I ever dreamed of about a rock band, and much more. Fantasy live onstage!
It's not a good idea to go to biebers video & click the dislike button cause every time we go to his video he gets payed a few cents cause his vid's sponsered. Instead we pick songs like this & get as many people as we can to watch so by the 1st of march on biebers birthday all rock videos will be most viewed on youtube charts. This will get the younger audience to listen to good music & might have good rock bands form again.PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE! THUMBS UP!
Back in November 1980 my brothers and I managed to scrape togeather the money to fly down to Sydney from Armidale. Several others from school and one poor mum for a chaparone stayed in a Motel and saw the greatest show from the greatest band.If we could only go back in time to those days.Life was simple then.
This lineup could've been IT. KISS here is everything KISS wasn't during the Dynasty Tour. Losing the coke-head former drummer and enlisting Carr didn't hurt. Eric made the others, especially Ace, really turn it up a notch. Can you imagine this band staying together and not recording the Elder the next year and doing a rock record instead? There might never have been a non-makeup 80s KISS because this lineup was so good. Who knows how far they could've taken it?
@CommercialFreak77 Ace also drank ridiculous amount of champagne. It was one of KISS' largest traveling bills while on tour. Read Chris Lendt's book, "KISS and Sell: The Making of a Supergroup" for details. Lendt was their former accountant. The other members of the band said the book was accurate.
@grantorino2009 Damn good points torino. I never considered the future of this line-up as a long-term proposition, but it would have been sweet. Unfortunately, I think Ace's time with the band was coming to and end sooner or later, he was/is rather mercurial. That was proven again some 20 years later.
This has to be my all time favorite concert they ever put on, I mean everything sounded great, the energy was through the roof, and Eric brought in the heavey shit. Perfect show, I wish I was there.
This is excellent stuff! They are playing and singing superbly. This tour seems like it was much better than the Dynasty tour was in North America. And Eric Carr is doing a great job.
I was at that show, 19th November 1980. I went home with the body of Paul Stanleys guitar. He broke it, threw it to the security guard who was standing infront of me, who then passed it over the barricade to me. I've since noticed at other shows ive attended, when the guitar is broken, the lights go out and a roadie removes the guitar off stage. I was 15 and Kissteria was MASSIVE, great memories.
@vixenfoxx6 for me the best version of detroit rock city pauls vocal range here is immence and ace really rocked in the solo and of course the late great eric carr really fucking rocked
THIS WAS A GREAT SHOW MUSICALLY ON FIRE but the theatrics take a big loss probally because of wind BUT FIREWORKS at the end FUCKING ROCK. This is probally the 2nd most determined line up of Kiss Then The 1990 Hot In The Shade Tour when kiss also wanted to prove something with a huge Concert also on kissology volume 2.
LOL at 4:29, Ace's cloak looks like Marilyn Monroe's skirt (frm the famous movie scene) hahaha
i just love the way Mr Carr plays; he goes berserk on the drums like there's no tomorrow. hard & fast & joyful, like he's having the best time of his life - which im sure he is.
All the vocals sound double tracked (one vocal played over the top of a duplicate layer to fatten the sound and smooth out any rough edges). This concert went out live on the radio via a mobile recording studio.
THANK YOU......The good thing about the video clip is they show more Ace and Eric and less Gene & Paul. Look at any video clip from the reunion onwards and you never see much Ace..
I absolutely agree. Any version with Eric Carr is much better than with the other two drummers. Doesn't matter if one was an original & the other from Paul's shitty solo band. Eric Carr was the best.
Well there was me ... 2 back frtom the front with the big face. Won a ticket to the second night on th radio in Newcastle. Went the first night as well. Had a girlfriend who did a penthouse centrefold and had horses, so after the show took me back to where the Limo came out. Ace through me a towel out the window and said" see ya next year" NOT. Any way couldn't complain. Got the only full set of Kiss cards I know of.. anyone wanna make me an offer? One of the best nights of my life. kiss rock!!!
I was gonna write the same thing! haha- They're ON FIRE here!!!! GREAT version of DRC! Like you said- the best version! too bad they never toured the States during this era- at least, not to my knowledge..
the best version of detroit rock city is from budokan 77. i don`t like the vocal style here and the drumming

This version kicks ass, but paul's vocal is overdubbed over the original vocal. there's certain sections where you can hear both of them.
