For 30 years I wonder what this back ground noise at 00:06 is. Now I finally have the chance to ask the community whether anybody knows why Mike included it into the song.
Just another example of Mike Oldfield's genuis.... Let's face it he has never done anything to top Tubular Bells - Hergest Ridge or Ommadawn those will always be his top albums in my opinion... But he has come close after the rather weak album Incantations he bounced back rather nicely with this fine album Platinum.. Yes fans don't yell at me but I thought Incantations was weak... : )
compared to today it sounds like he was just warming up, forgive my ignorance, due to this being released before i was born,i never heard before i listened and i loved.
brilliant 1:31 at 2:30 & 3:15 at 5:00 the two excerpts favorite on this track this music is so pure beautiful & magical that only mike oldfield can do it
Mike has been producing music for almost 40 years... I hear he's working with Don Black, the Music Hall of Fame lyricist that has written almost all of the James Bond themes....YAYYYY. If you like this, youd probably LOVE Umphrey's McGee...similar explosive progressive feel and ingenuity but with a modern taste.
I Aye being funny but i'm 19, i love this song, i aint really into the GHETTO get me blud imma stab u music,,,, this,,, just brings a smile on my damn misrable face,, true outstanding
At 1st, i didin' want to rate or comment this song.. but as i kept listening to it, it kept getting better and better and i'm hardly reaching the end and i'm feeling so inspired. I had no idea this guy is a musical genius. I'm actually having one of his albums on cassette which my uncle passed to me and i just thought of checking out how these songs would sound like cause the titles are kinda funky. The album i'm having is titled, "Airborn". Thank you so much FoggyNotion.0.
the intro is one of the rare real mysteries to me, both how its played (delay, cross hand, overdob, how that strange complex rhythmic??) and the sound,
is it a synths clavinet, or what? does anyone have information about the intro of platinum?
@MoveOverCasanova I'm a great fan of Mike's as well and I loved this tune so much in the early 80s.For the synth section I'd go for a Polymoog.Came up in those years as the first "really" polyphonic analogue synthesizer. I think I saw him play it on a TV show.Not sure though...
cette musique , je la connais depuis mes 16 ans et j'en ai 45 et j'aimerais tant l'avoir en cd mais esc que elle exixte? ou alors peut on la telecharger? pour cette musique je mets un 10 sur 10 , Fabrice de belgique
@eagle416 i picked up "Impressions" by Mike Oldfield on vinyl a few months ago at FYE and i finally got around to listening to it last week. WOW! i've missed so much these past few months. but on the second record, it's mostly songs from Platinum (which i havent heard yet) and on the B side it's a couple of his traditional songs. i love it. Mike is definitely one my favorites now.

Does anybody know why Mike added that 'noise' at 00:06 into the rhythm? It bothers me for 30 years? What could be the reason?

We had a big discussion about this on the tubularnet forum but I KNOW that Mike says the word Platinum 6 seconds into the start. Can you hear it?

@TubularBelle
I can!
(not sure whether he says 'platinum' or anything else on earth, but YouTube is not the place for detecting it anyway, is it? :D)
