I am SO glad that he is going to Valjean in the film :) I admit, I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't going to be Alfie Boe...but I'm really glad it is him - not some actor that can't make the cut.
I say that all Broadway actors have a super power, Sutton Foster doesn't need to breath, Mathew Broderick doesn't age and apparently Hugh Jackman has the ability to become the poster child of testosterone after... Well, THIS!
what cant he do? ... hugh was offered the chance to play the phantom in the 2004 movie adaptation of phantom of the opera but declined due that he was already filming van helsing....not that i dont like gerard butler, but i wonder what it would be like if our dear hugh sang music of the night? *sigh* the world will never know...
I love this song, love Hugh in "Oklahoma" and this concert is epic!! Could you please make this video avaiable to play on mobile phones too. It would be nice to listen to it on the go.
I can totally picture him in like the background of an X-man movie smoking and singing this to himself and the people just satring at him like he's nuts
@Lilkrouton it actually is official now. it's on imdb.com and I've read articles about it. they have most of the characters casted now and I'm very happy with who they picked.
@RPenta well NO, but he's good!! and he's got the right charm to play Curly.. my brother and sister in law saw the show in London and thought he was great, plus he did his own dancing in the dream ballet, which is usually done with lead dancers, with Curly and Laurie in the foreground...
@jukji1821 Well, here's hoping he can "pull off" the role of Jean Valjean in the movie version of "Les Miserables". Word is he's signed on to play the part. His voice is too reedy and 'thin' for Valjean IMO, but guess we'll see! Word is Paul Bettany will be singing/playing Javert. Nothing official on either rumor...
McKenny has a totally different approach--one Broadway could accept. McKenny is much more flamboyant. Perhaps the producers were concerned with the bottom line: ticket sales and more people in attendance.
@daisiesinmay1 cannot agree more. i watched hey mr producer for nearly a dozen times, and everytime i would say something like 'hey this guy looks strangely like wolverine' to the people next to me. not until now did i know it really IS him. he really, really blows me off now. i think if i show this to my classmates, they'll all be stunned. actually i think i'm gonna share it on facebook right now. (lol)
Absolutely amazing! Who knew? I agree with the above statement Handsome, Intelligent, Charming, Kind. He's all of that plus, more! He truly is one of the good guys!
I saw Hugh Jackman in Oklahoma in London before he was in X-Men - he wasn't a big movie star then, but he was great in Oklahoma - I even bought the soundtrack which I still have! He co-starred with Maureen Lipman and Josefina Gabrielle.
Mary Rodgers, daughter of the composer, said this was the best production she'd ever seen, and she saw the original Broadway production with Alfred Drake and the original television production and the feature film which both starred Howard Keel. The performance you see on the DVD is more intimate and less broad, which enhances the experience.
@kennfong Howard Keel did not appear in the feature film version. In the 1955 movie the leading male roles were played by Gordon MacRae and Rod Steiger
@Aidankiwi Incidentally, Rod Steiger did his own singing. nobody up to that time had any idea that he could sing. He really was a very versatile actor.
I hope she did not say Jackman sang the role the best or else I think Mary needs to change the batteries in her hearing aid; as a singer Jackman cannot carry Keel, Raitt, Drake, and most of all Gordon McRae's jock strap when it comes to singing.
@kennfong Did she say Jackman could outsing Drake or MacRae? If so I think she must have been having a senior moment or the hearing aid needed a battery.
My guess is that's an Okie accent. There's another rendition of the song posted on YT from a local performance in Hendersonville, Oklahoma. The singer also pronounces "meadow" as "meadaaa."
For the record, the singer, one Sean McLaughlin, is pretty good!
@thechinadesk It must be really difficult to imitate an accent. I have seen many variations of this play and very few if any of the performers sound native. Depending on where one is from in Oklahoma, the word would be pronounced: maydough, mehda, or meder, or meddoe. However, probably not with the extended aaaa sound most often used.
Sounds like an ego maniac who tries to define himself by making a a mockery of numerous crafts.... I say stick to acting, he's and incredibly talented actor at it and obviously has worked hard at his abilities. Plenty of singers devote their lives to hone their skills and don't pretend to be actors.
WHEN IS HIS MOVIE MUSICIAL COMING OUT SO MANY RUMORS ....HE IS AMAZING AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING SINCE RUMORS CAME OUT ABOUT FOX OKING IT LAST YEAR HURRY THE HELL UP!!!!!
my boyfriend is Curly in out middle school musical this year for Oklahoma. I am so proud of him! He doesn't need to be miced! his voice is like butter. better than Hugh Jackman. I'm not even kidding.
And of course what every actor should strive to be, diverse, no matter what the role is you can do it. Whether you need to be a over-ambitious magician, a muscle-bound superhero, or a farmer in Oklahoma
@MonkiiGirl: As if Gerard Butler was a tenor in the movie adaption...
I usually don't like Joel Schumacher, but I quite enjoyed (his) Phantom film, but Gerard's singing was really disappointing. It's not his fault. I think even if he would have gotten more training, his voice just doesn't fit The Phantom. It seems Joel and Andrew wanted a rough voice, instead of a threatrical one, like Hugh, I find it a pity, though.
@MonkiiGirl: I disagree. I think Hugh would have been a whole lot better, even him not being a tenor. Again, it could be due the producers intention of wanting a rough sounding singer instead of a theatrical/classical-like sounding singer for the movie, that made Gerard not legit at all. I think Hugh's sound, even with possible necessary arrangements of the songs for his voice (like they did here and there for Gerard), would have made a better film. Then again, this is my opinion.
I love his charisma! he's completely connected to the song & the audience, he was made for the stage. & yet, he manages to be brilliant in films too, a hard transition to make. and he's gorgeous!! there's just nothing wrong with this man, he's pretty much perfect. =)
Oh by the way....he was very close to being casted as JAMES BOND. James Bond and he can sing. I guess chicks dig him. I would if I was a woman. I guess...Maybe I should not go there...you all know what I mean.
