@kennaCaecity / @sugarandlemon, if the mule didn't want to do this, and it didn't enjoy it, it simply wouldn't have done it. Giving a mule a cue to action by giving it a tug is NOT cruel. If the mule didn't want to do this, it could have easily pulled the handler and the jump over, or "escaped" any number of ways. Mules (and horses), when handled well, enjoy performing and the thrill of the satisfaction from the handlers/crowd.
@greenongreen1 I am not saying that this particular mule was unhappy with the situation, but we as humans have really honed the skill of forcing equines to bend to our wills and when we do force the animal, we do it in a manner that makes it feel helpless. I.e. placing them in round pens or tying them and applying inescapable pressure until the animal complies. This is defined as "learned helplessness".
A stand still? At six-feet? Do you realize that during other competitions we allow our horses to have a running start for 18-inchers? Is a mule that different? This is mean.
Mules actualy are better jumpers than horses. Horses simpely cant jump that high from stand still. But mules can and they dont realy mind jumping that high from standstill. It doesnt make a diffrence for them to jump from standstill or to jump galloping. Mules are THAT different.
I first discovered this when i was at my barn. One of the many mules there was in the pasture, behind a 5 foot fence. Seeing how we were not a professional jumping barn, we never had any problems of horses jumping the fence. One day, one of the mules decided to coon jump the fence! The motivation-someone left a bag of carrots out! Jumped the fence and trotted over to the bag like nothing happened! WE WERE STUNNED!
tis a typical mule. Mules need a little bit more...encouragement than a horse. Mules analyze situations and determine if it's worth it, and it won't do something over and over if they don't like it. Unlike a horse, where most horses will listen to its rider without giving a second thought...atleast, most of the time.
Yes, it's called coon jumping. No, it has nothing to do with the racial term. It began when mules were used for hunting racoons. A lot of the time, there would be fences up in the woods that they would have to jump from a stand still. My donkey is only 12.2HH and he can coon jump 4'.
@fruitsalad234 Mules are known for their ability to jump high from a standstill, like a deer. they are really great. this one seemed a little hesitant tho
I have been to the mule jump in Pea Ridge, AR for the past 7 or 8 years and they are wonderful. Kenny does a wonderful job with his mules. The next mule jump for 2008 is next Saturday Oct. 11. Can't wait.
thats not cruelty do you know what mules are used for there not to look at and are not bread to pet or love on have you ever heard of someone coon hunting off of one it happends alot and how else are you going to get over a fence but to jump over it dont speak unless you know whats goin on or what true cruelty is to an animal like starving one or beating it for no reason

@ponylvrhorses
You can always watch some free jumping mules. Without a lead. You can see that they gallop towards the obstacle then just stop for a second and jump.

It coon jumping, yes, there is a certain area they are supposed to stay in. It's not a very large area, just enough to maybe take a stride.
