Reminds me of the time when I was a kid my dad and I came on an old abandoned house out in the middle of a field several miles from anything. There were steps down into the basement and we wanted to go down there pretty badly but it was almost dark. My dad said we'd come back the next day. We went down the next day in the daylight, it was just a small dark room about 10 x 20 ft. square, completely empty. Looked creepy in the twilight though.
I love how Barney uses school yard, juvenile sayings to cover his inabilities. And it's funny how Andy always sets him up to which Barney says, "You know, you beat everything, you know that?" Then Gomer says the old saying "age before beauty." That's the way it was way back when.
MrJtr75 -- if this episode isn't very funny to you -- it must take a serious amount of extreme comedy to make you laugh. This episode is a hoot!!!!!!! True acting without special effects -- that's real comedy!
The acting is great, even though you know that Barney is afraid Don Knotts portrayal is priceless as well as Jim abors ,the perfect foil for this scenario. very much missed are these two!!!
“All I’m saying is there are some things beyond the ken of mortal man that shouldn’t be tampered with – we don’t know everything, Andy. And there’s plenty going on right now in The Twilight Zone that we don’t know anything about and I think we ought to stay clear!” -- Barney Fife, 1963...
.Only in the Kennedy era could something this comical be so creepy. Like The Petries and that haunted "murder cabin".
When this episode was being filmed, the producers of the show felt it was too scary to be a comedy. Even with the editing, the writers and actors recieved mail from people saying the episode was scary, even though there were moments of laughter. The original script, which was filmed, had the two boys getting ready to go into the house, with Ottis in a white sheet in the background running towrds them.
@Kimmell2010 do you know the date it aired? would have been a good one to put on around halloween as tv wasn't too keen on making actual halloween episodes back then
i'm pretty sure that among the laughing audience was the actor playing Barney, you can hear a laugh very much like his every once in a while. noticed that in several episodes already. at 5:20 here for example.
Hey uh...did you know the white house was haunted once a long time ago? It was in the late 19th century before the white house started having electricity, before the cars were invented, etc. Back in that time, the presidents had to use candles for light. There was a president one time who claimed that he saw a former dead president's ghost one night. I don't remember which president was that, nor who's ghost was that but yeah, they taught that in social studies class once.

Did anyone notice that when Andy took them to the house, both Barney and Gomer "behind Andy" boldly walked up to the house? lol
