Hey, just wanted to let everyone know I've left Open Labs and started a new company called Music Computing. Check out the new gear at Music Computing or click the link below for videos. - Thanks, Victor Wong
Great keyboard. How should I decide between the Korg M3, Pa2x Pro, or the Tyros 3? They all seem very powerful. I'm particularly interested in the accompaniment features and less so the workstation aspect of it. Interested in contemporary and spacey sounds. Thx for any opinions.
@Halunlimited Well... it's pretty hard to answer that question... first of all, I don't like Tyros at all, it feels really cheap when you play, so I won't buy it! I never had the chance to try the Pa2x Pro, but I heard a lot of good thing about it and I think it has what you're looking for in the accompaniment and arrangement features.
Again, the best way to be sure is to try it in a music store.
@Yuumu I know what you mean about the light plasticky feel of the Tyros compared to my Roland Fantom X which is built like a tank and the keys feel like a real piano in every way. If I may ask, what were the main reasons chose the M3 over other options. This is a major investment and one you want to stay with for quite a while. I'm looking to get a full band sound without having to do a lot of sequencing. Prefer to play with a preset backbeat on the fly, live. Thx for your thoughts.
@Halunlimited I chosed the M3 because I needed a keyboard that was powerfull with synth sounds but has good instrument sounds too to play in my progressive metal band. After testing, I didn't like the Roland synth sounds, not powerfull enough. I also loved the ability to put a Radias along with the M3. Now, if you want great arrangement, the ability to play with a band, maybe you'd better check roland side because roland has better natural instrument.
@Yuumu What I meant by a full band sound was for me to do a one man band performance that sounds like a full band. That's why I'm interested in the arrangers. Trying to figure out the best arranger out there. Can the M3 do all the auto arrangements that the Pa2c Pro can (and more perhaps), or do you think the M3 would be overkill for my needs? I'll call up KORG later too for their advice, but I also want to hear from an unbiased musician, like yourself, and who really knows how to play. Thx
@Halunlimited As I said, I've never tried the Pa2x Pro. What I know is Korg sells it as "the ultimate Arranger for the professional musician!". But I don't want to give you bad advice... I think the Pa2x Pro suits well with what you want ! But please, try both of them somewhere so that you won't be dissapointed.
Very nice! I ordered the m3 88 expanded two days ago and I'm taking the day off tomorrow in anticipation of delivery. Listening to your beautiful vids is making me very exited, I may struggle to get a good nights sleep!!!!
I think that Kurzweil and Yamaha have the better acoustic solo and ensemble sounds, just like the poster said, but in my opinion korg has better lead and pad sounds. If you dont care about sampler and sequencer maybe Yamaha or Kurzweil are for you, but remeber that you can only layer 4 sounds with the yamaha, your decision, try them
Great playing Yuumu... Be sure to visit my myspace and check out some of my orchestral works on there...You play very well and I love your interpretation of dynamics and velocity :)
To be fair, RCAMPOMAS has a point. There's nothing revolutionary going on here. The orchestral samples aren't so much better than my 10 year old Roland M-OC1 module. And it's true Yamaha seem far and away seem to have the best acoustic solo and ensemble samples on their Motifs (even the older ones).
RCAMPOMAS, do you always judge the entire sound-base of something based on one song using one example, on YouTube, with all its inherant quality losses? I thought it was fantastic, but then again, I'm not a seasoned pro like you RCAMPOMAS... :o/
I fail to understand what you imply by older keyboards being able to do what the M3 does. Are you really so narrow minded? Sure, it's a synth, it plays sounds, just like most synths do. What's your point?
I've never found Orchestral Korg sounds near satisfactory. I guess it is matter of taste.
It is maybe because of my ignorance about these technologies surrounding Korg products, but after seeing all the demonstrations of this product, Karma or OASYS, i still cant catch the innovative thing, i mean, havent seen anything one could not do with some older keyboards, say a Fantom for instance.
I will be purchasing the KORG TR 88 key this spring. do you know much about this keyboard? I am looking for a sound much like the one you are doing here, powerufl orchestra.. how is korg for this kind of thing? and i also love nightwish :) and hans zimmer.
Well, which one is better... mmh it depends on what you want ! If you prefere accoustic sounds, such accoustic guitar, horns and so on, then I guess Roland is better.
Well in fact I'm not so sure, since Korg release 512 new programs for free, they had increased the quality of their accoustic sounds and new combi's are on their way too...
In my opinion M3 is far better than any other synth, but that's a point of view.
Nice work. When you talented young artists post these it gives me hope that the classical/progressive/symphonic electronic music has a good future. I mostly enjoy your improvs and others like sonoftheocean on the M3. I have one and will post as well. Keep playing and posting. Sam Utah
I wonder if the Korg synths only have synthetic sounds? That's because of all the demos where they play only synths and some synthetic drums. I mean can you compare this thing with a motif xs? because i want to buy me a good workstation with some great (not only synthetic sounds) my first choice was the motif but than i discovered other workstation like the m3 or the fantom.
M3 is only synth sounds... so if you wanna play only with accoustic sounds such as sax, brass, accoustic guitar, then take the XS
But once again, the best way for you to know is to try them ! Just spend one hour on every synth with earphones and you will quiclky find which one is good for you
Seriously don't understand why anyone would think this sounds good, your not a bad player but deluded if you think this conveys any real emotion. Get yourself a piano and express real emotion not just a synthetic approximation. I've look at all the ME demos and yet to find anything that impresses.
Well... of course you will never be able to replace accoustic instrument by synth one
But I'm not rich and I can't pay for an orchestra to come in my bedroom every time I wanna play with an orchestral arrangement ^^ or even pay for someone to tune my accoustic piano every 3 month...
I'm very happy for you if you can do it :)
Anyway, Korg piano sound (I had not used it in my video) is almost perfect and well played, you cannot tell if it's accoustic piano or not
not in that same fashion, but ive heard the tune many times >_> i have internet musicians who play in that key like that. sounds like the socom theme. or a metal group i listen to........in fact i play it to o-o
aghh those samples sound awful and plasticky....the playings fine but just listen to those strings, theyre static and unpleasant, and the oboe/clarinet (i can't tell) sounds very static and lifeless...bad korg! *hits them* xx
I know, I got a chance to play the M3 just yesterday. Spent over about 2 hours digging into the quality and it's just horrible compared to the Motif XS. and don't even get me started on the fantom. -jeez guys!!-
That's just a point of view question... I tried both, and my opinion was that the XS was horrible (I hate the yammy piano sound, to metalic...) exept for brass sounds which litteraly sucks in M3...
I love Korg Kit, I have a Triton Extreme and a Radius Module .. but I'm about to buy the XS ... I've not heard anything particularly stunning after demo'ing the M3

What's better, m3 or oasys? ;)

MerlinofChaos 4 years ago
It depends on what you do with it !
M3 has the same sounds that Oasys, same keybed and a great sensitive screen.
Why the hell should we paid 4000$ more for the Oasys ?
Well, more memory, cd burner, and other stuff that are usefull if you're a pro on tour (like Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater)
Following Stephen Kay, creator of M3 and Oasys, M3 can do the same thing that Oasys !
" All the best features of the Oasys in a more affordable package "
Yuumu 4 years ago
So after I get M3 I wouldn't necessarily need to upgrade to Oasys?

ok, I will try to do it, but i can't promise, I'm on my way to my university tests !

Yuumu 4 years ago
By the way, I just remember, do you know Dream Theater ?
It's keyboardist, jordan Rudess, use an oasys, and at the end of "In the Presence of the ennemies part II" from their last release, there is an epic moment.
With this, you can have a view of what m3 can do.
I will try to find it here on youtube for you.
Yuumu 4 years ago
Yes I've seen Jordan Rudess clips (The ones where he plays just the oasys) they were pretty good, but I thought that M3 can't really do what the oasys can, can it?
MerlinofChaos 4 years ago
It can in 99%
The only difference is that you might have to change some parameter to arrive to the same sounds.
The reason of that is that m3 has less sound memory than oasys.
For exemple a sound like the intro of "the ministry of lost soul" by the same band is available without any modifications !
You can easily find the song here on youtube.
The best is that you go on store to test it.
But for me as for many of my keyboard friends, M3 beats Roland and Yamaha. It has endless possibilities.
Yuumu 4 years ago
Well that's the big question everyone is asking !
I do prefere M3 because of quality of sound instead of quantity !
XS has many sound but they are not all great !
M3 has powerfull synth sounds, lead sounds, accoustic sound and KARMA !!! Karma is just something unbelivable !!
I think M3 is far better, but that's a question of point of view...
If you have any question don't hesitate !
Yuumu 4 years ago
