How impressive!! She makes all the Beethoven sonatas sound fresh and new, as if they were written today. I am wondering when her complete Beethoven sonata set will be ready, as I cannot wait to obtain a copy.
Why , in the codetta, does she play the culminating phrase twice in the same range with the left hand? It should be played in the left hand at measure 96 and then again an octave lower at measure 100, but she plays them both at the same octave. curious>?
@johnburtonbalnis Good ear! I don't think it was a mistake on her part; it's most likely an interpretive decision. I'm studying this sonata now, and the best guess I can give is that she kept it down in that range because she wanted a louder dynamic. To me, that left hand passage is a little weak when played in the correct octave. Of course, we have a different piano than Beethoven, and Lisita has a different interpretation as well. I'm curious too!
wonderful, great work Valentina, everything I have watched you perform is a masterpiece of the greatest magnatude Great interpitation and performance.
It has to said this young womans keyboard dexterity is truly astounding. As far as this performance goes however, I find her tempo too hectic even for this ebullient mvt. For me Ingrid Fliter is more subtle and musically attuned to this sonata.
This performance is way better than her Hammerklavier (from a musician's perspective). And I don't think she plays this like Moszkowski at all. This feels right to me.
Brava:) From one who doesn't play but appreciates greatly the divinely inspired compositions of Beethoven and the wonderfully talented interpretations of those like you who bring us to the feet of God.
I love how visually you seem so delighted by the music of this piece. It's delightful to watch!! I LOVE your playing!! Please keep posting videos! As a pianist, you inspire me! :)
Glenn Gould plays this movement faster (no big surprise). Valentina's tempo brings out the playfulness -- there's nothing worse than solemn Beethoven. Remember he wrote these sonatas to showcase his pianistic abilities when he was breaking into the Vienese music world. They need to be showy and exciting. If you try to bring the same gravity to these early pieces that he has in his later works, you kill the spirit that animated them.
damn this is sooo depressing how can you play this sooo fast!! its unbelievable, im fighting with this piece its soo difficult and i just can't do it in this tempo :(:(
In my experience, it's very easy to be "territorial" with another interpretation regardless of the differences (dynamics, tempi, rubato). What I'd like everyone to try and do is purely listen to it for what it is and not have your bias obscure what that particular artist is trying to convey.
Additionally, just because n number of others played it a particular way doesn't make it right or wrong - hence the term interpretation.
@ Prestothemusic. I would highly suggest that you listen to the piece multiple times. Time has taught me that there is always a logic behind what she does. :)
Very lively, buy may I suggest that you slow the song down Lisitsa? I think you are playing the song too fast. Remember, tempos back in the 1800's are different from today's speed.
Beethoven would probably not be pleased to see you speed up his sonata this fast. XD
@Prestothemusic Times change. The idea is to play the music and have the same effect that it originally had, and in the age the music was written, it may have been just slightly slower, but to those audiences, it would have seemed extremely fast; so to sound extremely fast in OUR age, it may be necessary to prest it up just a bit, eh?

I am currently memorizing this sonata to play for a recital. My piano teacher has always been warning me about not PLAYING THIS SONG TOO FAST. I'm not sure what Beethoven would say if he listened to this interpretation and the tempo..................(really sorry to be blunt) Other than that, very fluent and lively!
Toujours une interprétation magnifique de la part de Valentina Lisitsa, il y a toujours un plus dans sa façon de jouer par rapport à la plupart des autres interprétations pourtant souvent excellentes. A quand l'intégrale des sonates de Beethoven?
I know each musician has their own speed, but this....this is just WAY too fast. I can't help but imagine beethoven rolling his eyes and thinking *good grief, what was I thinking, writing presto down*. XD
Time and time again, your interpretations are beautiful, and I can also feel your enjoyment. For a moment I felt as if Beethoven himself was playing it, back then. Wow.
valentina, i have to say it again, you play this sonata so beautifully!! your interpretation of this sonata is the best ive ever heard. finally someone who plays the first movement with energy, passion and in the proper tempo. its so engaging to watch!!
Watching you enjoy this music is almost as fun as listening! Beethoven was a genius, and we are blessed by the opportunity to hear you interpret his work for us!
Loved this performance! Completely different of my own, but amazingly convincing. Interesting what you do in the passagem between bars 97 and 101. Thanks for posting!
I had the great pleasure of seeing her perform live on the 24th of August in NYC. This was the first piece she played. Words cannot describe the performance, so I'll go with a made up one. As the fake James Lipton would say, "Scrumtrulescent."
I think Valentina plays totally in the spirit of Beethoven. I can picture Beethoven playing his composition exactly like this--with so much vigor and precision!
@PapiJohn51 I couldn't agree more. I posted a comment on her Moonlight Sonata 3rd movt saying that this would be the way Beethoven himself would have played it. Here it is exactly the same - and this is a young Beethoven's work!
My admiration for her work, playing and sense of humour just grows and grows!!
Thank you for uploading this piece Valentina, your dream of playing all Beethoven's Sonatas is really coming true, and you are not just playing, your interpretation is amazing, Irena Koblar's performance of this piece was my favorite until now.
