Mannix takes me to my childhood. In Mexico City we watched him about 9 o'clock I can't remember the day; I just remember that It was the year of 1969. This was many years ago, I was only 6, but I remember It was one of my favorite Tv program.
Recently read an article about Mike Connors seems he's in bad shape now..he did his own fight scenes an was even knocked out one time. All the injuries he sustained have caught up with him.
According to IMDB trivia, during the run of the Mannix series, Mannix was shot 17 times and knocked unconscious 55 times, so you can imagine there would be issues with all the wear and tear he sustained.
Lucille Ball was very smart, but not a businesswoman.
She had an understanding of entertainment and what it took to pull it off for the American television market, a classic example of this was Star Trek, the business end said it was a dud, however it turns out that she was right all along, it was a "late bloomer", and in fact had she stuck to her position, and fired the 2 dweebs, she would have been better off.
But, from a profit standpoint, the dweebs did help make her rich.
Wow, I will never, ever forget that theme! My favorite show as a kid, hearing it brings such good memories of the 60's I could almost cry, really. That show and the one with Burt Reynolds Dan August I think. Can't forget Chuck Conners "The Rifleman".
@LBraunhaus No, the beautiful Gail Fisher came later...in the first season, Mannix was an employee of "Intertect", a futuristic, computer-run detective agency (managed by Joseph Campenella). This format only lasted one season, and Mannix became a private investigator on his own. Great show, all seasons!!!
Some have objected to by comments re the vitality of Ms. Ball's Presidency of Desilu. Ms. Ball was NOT a figurehead but took active interests and control of the business. If Lucy had such a lock on CBS how come for several years the ONLY show Desilu had on that network was The Lucy Show? True CBS funded a pilot program for Desilu. Dwayne Hickman tells of his meetings with Lucy during the run up to the pilot for a Desilu Hey Teacher and refutes and debunks stories Lucy not in charge of Desilu
Re comments that Lucille Ball wasnt running Desilu when this show was produced. I beg to differ. The sale of Desilu to Paramunt required Paramount to keep Lucille Ball as President of Desilu. Eventually Ball left the company. Also Ms. Ball per Herb Solow in his book on Desilu was very involved Mannix. Lastly, This show likely was placed on the CBS schedule due to Lucille Ball's clout at CBS with a pilot development deal. By Paramount buying Desilu it
@ToughXArmy69 If you read the book "Desilu", Lucille Ball had to be told by her advisors to call CBS and tell them she wanted Mannix on the air. She was a figurehead; her deputies ran the company after Desi sold out. She was the first to admit she wasn't a businesswoman - she is quoted several times in "Desilu" as saying things to that extent. But it was her popularity as a performer that led to her company getting the chances to produce those other CBS shows.
Ah, and you can see Mannix's customized Oldsmobile Tornado convertible in the First Season's opening credits. Too bad such a model was never put into production, though it was put out as a 1/25 scale model kit, now collectable.
@crispycritterz HELP!!! I know that the first episode of Mannix was posted (my sister and I have an argument about it)! Do you have the link or has it been removed!!!
@mikefastener I believe CBS (or it's parent company) has gone through youtube, removing the series. This happens every time there is interest in the show. Greed or contempt for the fans? Who knows.
Mike Connors was a real man, the real deal. They definitely don't make them like him any more. The toughest Armenian guy, ever. Joe Campanella, who went on to voice the BMW commercials, is also a very cool dude. He volunteered to do voice over for some City of Los Angeles video projects while I used to work there.

Joe Campanella, who went on to voice the BMW commercials, is also a very cool dude. He volunteered to do voice over for some City of Los Angeles video projects while I used to work there.
@midmogal There should be a show called "The Punch-Drunk Detective" about the hazards of TV detective work, showing Sam Spade, Phillip Marlow and their heirs in an old folk's home, trying to remember what case they were working on.
Holy cow, I remember as a little kid watching Mannix sat. nights here in NYC. It was a cool show although I believe I was trying to kill some time before Chiller Theater came on.
Others have already repeatedly asked this question, and various possibilities have been proposed, but I am still compelled to ask: "Mannix...brought to you by..."
This originally ran at 10pm on Saturdays which was bedtime for most tiny tots back then. For years all I got to see was this cool opening credits sequence before bitterly trudging off to bed.
i first saw mannix when it first went into syndication in the mid 70's when i was a kid. it used to come on sunday night in memphis on our local CBS affiliate. i loved mannix! i was a hyper kid and i found myself running and jumping off everything trying to be like him.
Apparently Mike Conners got banged up a lot ... In an interview with Bill O'Reilly, Conners said that he sprained his wrist and dislocated his shoulder -- all during filming of the PILOT episode!
I recall that shortly after my kid brother was born, my folks took us to Puerto Rico... and I saw the opening of "Mannix" one evening on TV there at my uncle's house. I don't recall if it was WKAQ or WAPA that aired it.
Anyway... "MANNIX: presentado a ustedes cortesía del Café Yaucono, y de la Cerveza Corona."
For our neighbors to the North... "MANNIX: Brought to you by Air Canada---Let's get away together; and by Labatt's 50 Premium Ale---Put a little life in your world."
Another "brought to you by" for MANNIX: Given that he got beat up a few times and needed to be in working mode ASAP... EXCEDRIN, what ache? Or BAYER, powerful pain relief, and so much more.
For other muscle aches(consider his karate and other stunts)... Break the grip of pain... with BEN-GAY!
Desilu which had 3 studios and the hit The Lucy Show, had a resurgence with Mission Impossible, Star Trek, and Lucille Ball's smash hit Desilu comedy Yours Mine and Ours..Mannix was the last show Desilu produced before Lucille Ball sold out her controlling share in Desilu to Paramount.
I wish Paramount had kept the Desilu fabled name...it stood for independence and quality.
@ToughXArmy69: They didn't want to, because they didn't want to, and Lucy wasn't running the studio anymore anyway. Also, Paramount/Desilu isn't the same as Columbia/Screen Gems (which was a division of the studio dating back to the '40's, when it made cartoons and other short subjects.) If they wanted to get into TV, Paramount could have revived the Famous Studios name, with the ident appearing as 'Famous Studios, Television Subsidiary Paramount Pictures Corporation' just like COL/SG.
@Neville6000, this was because Screen Gems was a creation of Columbia, and Desilu was an independent company that was bought out by Paramount. Interestingly, prior to buying out Desilu, Paramount used its studio lot for several television series such as "Bonanza".
@boxerdogs11 the only thing I didn't like about the TV show Mannix, was he had a negro secretary, I would've had a hot blonde, like "I dream of Jeannie"
@shanquilla562 Maybe they could've cast a blonde as his secretary... but would that have worked as well as Gail Fisher's Peggy?
Say what you will... but, IMHO, putting Gail Fisher as Mannix's secretary made that show work all the years. How much mileage do you think Barbara Eden or Liz Montgomery would have given them?
I remember reading an article 15-20 years ago that said if Mannix was a real person he would have brain damage since he always got knocked out in every episode!
I always liked this show, and had the biggest crush on Peggy Fisher after the start of the second season, when Mannix moved out on his own with his own agency.
Best theme ever! I now realize early 70's TV was a wonderland for confused little gay boys like me. I had the biggest crush on Mike Connors - and don't forget Doug McClure, Ron Ely as Tarzan (God, that itty bitty loincloth!), Chuck Connors, Robert Conrad in the 'Wild Wild West ' (could those pants get any tighter?) - even Race Bannon in 'Johnny Quest'. Ah, me!
Ah, I remember this theme song. I could swear there was even a radio single version. Apparently, Rod Serling's "Night Gallery" was losing in the ratings, to "Mannix", and Serling complained that NBC was trying to turn his show into "Mannix, in a graveyard."
Dig that custom Toronado convertible at 0:08-0:09. It's gotta be one of a kind. I'll buy the DVDs just to see him driving that thing. Is it in the whole first season, or just the pilot episode?
odantoro You have great taste in automobiles. Go back to my and saturnday's comments three weeks ago for more information on the "Mannixmobile" and other cars he drove. The one you commented on was customized by George Barris. He was also responsible for the "Batmobile", "The Munster Coach", and "Dragula" (Grandpa Munster's dragster). Great machinery.
I love the scene in a Seinfeld episode where George suggests he and Jerry escape from a limousine by jumping out the door and rolling. Jerry's reply: "What are you, Mannix?" :D
Intertect, the detective company he worked for. In season two, he quit and set up his own agency, and got a pretty secretary, Peggy Fair (Gail Fisher).
I am from Conner"s home town.Fresno, CA. In 4th grade we had a substitute teacher, and guess who he was? Mike's brother! We were so excited all day long, and it gave our class braging rights!
Most Woolworth's are closed. The one here in downtown Cleveland is now a House of Blues. I wonder if the guy who did the intro into the commercial is still alive. He had a very distinctive voice and I think did most of the announcing for those shows.
I don't know about beloved, but they are getting there. They won their last 4 games. If they improve and start winning consistantly, they may do just that. Where I work, we do a Browns Brunch and people come in before the game, load up on good food and then get ready to freeze their buns off in that domeless stadium. We have die hard fans that go and support the tean no matter what.
Me too, but it was cold as all get out. Had to buy a new battery because my car wouldn't start. Nothing special; I was trying to say "The Poetress" in French. I'm not sure if I said it right. I writer poetry as a hobby.
First season he drove a modified 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado convertible (olds did not have a toronado convertible)
Next few seasons Mannix drove Dodge Dart convertibles, then the Dodge Challenger/Plymouth "Cuda" models and in the final season he drove a 74 Camaro. Most of the cars were dark in color
The Toronado wasn't simply modified. It was a George Barris custom conversion. As a matter of fact, it was sold as 1/32" scale models for assembly. Saturnday, I'm impressed with your knowledge respect for the show.
I was as much a car nut as a great fan of Mannix & The Rockford Files. I also have the first three seasons of Mannix on DVD.
FYI: Mannix also drove several company cars from "Intertect" during the first season. They were mostly Ford Galaxie sedans or occasionally his boss Lew Wickersham's Lincoln Contenental, the 1960's version with the "suicide" doors.
Also, I have seen the George Barris Toronado, its at a museum near Nashville Tennessee.
He is class. Mike Connors is in good health but I wouldn't exactly say he looks like hes going on 40 though :) Still he looks great and I am glad he is still around.
He along with Joseph Campanella (who also looks good and healthy in his 80's) are featured together on the Mannix season one DVD. Great conversation about the show, commentary and Mr. Connors introduces each episode.
For God's sake, WHAT IS MANNIX BROUGHT TO YOU BY??!!

Punch cards! OMG.

Cutting edge technology my friend.
Only the best for Intertect.
Why those machines blaze along a 5-7 hrtz CPU speed and have 60 kb of RAM.
Now that was computer speed. The kind you need to be a top notch corporate detective like Mannix.
Laceykat66 1 year ago
@Laceykat66 As long as you punched the right data onto the card, those computers could do anything.

A little too grocery store sounding.

I remember reading an article 15-20 years ago that said if Mannix was a real person he would have brain damage since he always got knocked out in every episode!
tsarbomba1 2 years ago
I always liked this show, and had the biggest crush on Peggy Fisher after the start of the second season, when Mannix moved out on his own with his own agency.

@ryoushii And I had a crush on Joe Mannix :)

Ah, me!
gtlfb 2 years ago
Ah, I remember this theme song. I could swear there was even a radio single version. Apparently, Rod Serling's "Night Gallery" was losing in the ratings, to "Mannix", and Serling complained that NBC was trying to turn his show into "Mannix, in a graveyard."
Teflon65 2 years ago
@Teflon65: That explains why I keep seeing 'The Sixth Sense' episodes in syndication attached to Night Gallery!

Dig that custom Toronado convertible at 0:08-0:09. It's gotta be one of a kind. I'll buy the DVDs just to see him driving that thing. Is it in the whole first season, or just the pilot episode?
odantoro 2 years ago 3
odantoro You have great taste in automobiles.
FylthyBeest 2 years ago
Before that show, several years earlier,
'Mike" Connors' nickname was "Touch"
Connors, because of his big hands.
Good program for ANY era.

I love the scene in a Seinfeld episode where George suggests he and Jerry escape from a limousine by jumping out the door and rolling. Jerry's reply: "What are you, Mannix?" :D

Intertec

Intertect, the detective company he worked for. In season two, he quit and set up his own agency, and got a pretty secretary, Peggy Fair (Gail Fisher).

I am from Conner"s home town.Fresno, CA. In 4th grade we had a substitute teacher, and guess who he was? Mike's brother! We were so excited all day long, and it gave our class braging rights!

Prolly IBM Selectric Typewriters or Janitor in a Drum

You're taking me waaaaaaaaaaay back. I haven't heard about Janitor in a Drum since the 70s. I don't think they make that anymore.

You're prolly right. I thawt Woolworth's still carries it... oh, but can't find a Woolworth these days.
Warthog333 2 years ago
@Warthog333
Most Woolworth's are closed. The one here in downtown Cleveland is now a House of Blues. I wonder if the guy who did the intro into the commercial is still alive. He had a very distinctive voice and I think did most of the announcing for those shows.
lepoetress 2 years ago
House of Blues? They should call it House of Browns... to honor your beloved NFL team.
Warthog333 2 years ago
@Warthog333

Good luck next year. We'll see if my Cards and Eagles can make it back to the NFC Championship game.

Thanks. I sure hope so. They are waiting to see if Holgram will keep Manginit. I think the Cards and Eagles have been doing pretty well this year.

Well, I got thru the weekend 1 for 2... not as good as last year, but good enuf for me, and Mike Connors. What does Lepoetress stand for?
Warthog333 2 years ago
@Warthog333
Me too, but it was cold as all get out. Had to buy a new battery because my car wouldn't start. Nothing special; I was trying to say "The Poetress" in French. I'm not sure if I said it right. I writer poetry as a hobby.

I'm no etymologist, but I'd bet it's sort of a Frenchified version of "poetess" with an extraneous R thrown in for fun...
And I don't mean "Frenchified" in the slang sense. ;)

What kind of car did he drive?
RevJim1313 2 years ago
First season he drove a modified 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado convertible (olds did not have a toronado convertible)
Next few seasons Mannix drove Dodge Dart convertibles, then the Dodge Challenger/Plymouth "Cuda" models and in the final season he drove a 74 Camaro. Most of the cars were dark in color
saturnday 2 years ago
The Dart and Cuda convertibles were dark green, he also drove a Challenger coupe in light tan and the final Camaro was a medium blue.
colong88 2 years ago
Now you just know way too much about this.
NVanWendy 2 years ago 2
Can't help it - Mannix had style and this was clearly evident in his wheels.
colong88 2 years ago 4
The Toronado wasn't simply modified. It was a George Barris custom conversion. As a matter of fact, it was sold as 1/32" scale models for assembly. Saturnday, I'm impressed with your knowledge respect for the show.
FylthyBeest 2 years ago
Thanks FylthyBeest!

Mike Connors is class. The guy is 80 something and it looks like he going on 40.
easyscore 2 years ago
He is class. Mike Connors is in good health but I wouldn't exactly say he looks like hes going on 40 though :) Still he looks great and I am glad he is still around.
He along with Joseph Campanella (who also looks good and healthy in his 80's) are featured together on the Mannix season one DVD. Great conversation about the show, commentary and Mr. Connors introduces each episode.
