Why the hell are we all arguing over this? It's just a fucking song? Who gives a shit where the riffs and everything else came from? Just shut the fuck up and enjoy the Goddamn song!!!
This song in combination with the cover of the album makes me translate to another plane.... I'm almost closer to perfection with the whole piece... this is the music we missing for...
No GOodz its not Hey You On Pink Floyd the Wall which was compared to this ( its another song I cant think of or wanna spend the time looking up) and yes FAde to black uses the same riff DO you even play guitar? its clear.. u can hear it perhaps u need to learn some music theory along the way as well
and I did like the Quincy Jones Reference Nice touch :)
@tubedirectbox No, Fade to Black does not use the same riff. It uses a SIMILAR riff. But not the same. I'm surprised you can't hear the difference. You must be deaf or retarded. Which is it?
@domine21 You're right. Only the first 4 notes are the same as Fade the Black. Period. Its a slow picked arpeggio in the same key, but that's where the similarities end. I can't believe this discussion is even happening.
I have a version of this that the band did in 1989 that was a bit rockier with drums around the time of their "Bread And Circus" record, so it definately existed before the Metallica song. what douche would think anyone as brilliant as Glen Phillips would ever want to rip off a meathead like James Hetfield. lol
First of all who ever thinks this was a rip of a Metallica song is incorrect this song came out first and if you wanna know where the guitar riff came from its from Pink Floyd ( the Wall) Both bands took it and Honestly I think this Song is superior to both of them Lyrically and Musically
@tubedirectbox You seem to misunderstand music. This song, The Wall, and Fade To Black (I gather thats the song people say relates to this one) are NOTHING alike. Nothing dude. Nothing Metallica ever wrote had this riff, same for Pink Floyd.
@g00dz@g00dz Sorry I understand music quite Clearly and yes the riffs are the same period
I Play Guitar and bass have for over 30 years SO yes I understand music Clearly better then u otherwise u would hear it in less then 1 second... Also I have been doing audio Engineering for over 22 years I get paid to hear the nuances of music
So sorry Dude but u clearly dont have a clue about music or music theory stick to something you know better.

5-stars the song predicts the western world will return to the militant paganism of the athenian and later greco-roman empires...pray to apollo...mars and athena for victory over fanatic islam!-bleesed be!...peace is a hippie hallucination and a myth-milwaukee
I wondered how many others really get the meaning of this song. Worship gods who ask you for sacrifice, or worship one who has already sacrificed for you and now only asks for your love.
This whole album....it still gives me chills...the world seemed so much younger....Toad's effort on this album, "Fear" is mind-blowing and life-changing. "I will not take these things for granted, anymore".
The chorus in this song has got to be one of the most powerful passages recorded. I have listened to this song countless times since it was released and still havent tired of it.
"Be quick my love?" I wonder what he's trying to say here. I've followed "Toad" and Glen for awhile and let me tell you(as you all might know already) Glen is a captivating lyricist! This man has conviction! I put him in the same league as Eric Matthews another musician I aspire to. Both men are truly one of a kind!
"Be quick my love..." is an urgent, heartfelt invitation to accept the new relationship between God and man. Man has a choice: Either stay with the sacrificial, dogmatic religion of old, or accept the new "unconditional" love of God established by the ultimate sacrifice. The lyrics "there are armies moving..." illustrate the clash between good and evil; a "showdown" so to speak at the event of the crucifixion.
The song that made me fall in love wth TTWS and forever make me a Glen Phillips fan. The chanting at the end is so haunting and beautiful, I still use their songs to meditate to because it's so relaxing, forget new age music, this band sends me far closer to enlightenment. ;)
I immediately fell in love w/ TtWS the first time I heard/purchassed this tape (yes, cassette tape). He has such a way w/ words and how he expresses them. Haunting indeed. Thank you for uploading.

Okay, just for clarification, Glen Phillips does not believe in any gods. This is NOT a religion-friendly song.
I think some people may be listening to the lyrics with bias.
Same goes for 'Don't Fade' and even 'Fly From Heaven.' The message is not what a lot of people seem to think it is. *shrugs*

@tubedirectbox. Just to let you know, Fade to Black came out in 1984. TTWS formed in 1986 and this song was 1991.

@tubedirectbox Alright there Quincy Jones. Use your 30 year guitar/bass gift and play this song, then Fade To Black, then Hey You.
If you even owned a guitar you wouldn't be arguing with me, because you play all three songs differently.
