It must be because of an earlier episode in which Searle and Magee get into a heated debate over the legitimacy of five-pool and proxy cheese, a truly pressing philosophical problem we still face today.
I know someone else pointed thiss out, but apart from the amazing interest of the subject as such, what I find most baffeling is Searle's eloquence; to be able to explain one's ideas verbally in such a clear fashion is truley a rare gift. Amazing.
@johndickweed1 I completely agree. He is the most brilliant speaker I've heard in philosophy. He speaks so clearly and in such an organized manner, and yet it appears the talk isn't rehearsed or prepared (I might be wrong here).
@johndickweed1 A demarcation of a good philosopher is the ironic state of eloquent complexity, i.e. reducing complexity to simple understanding. I think it's rather ideal to remove obfuscation from philosophy -- especially from those who intentionally make philosophy esoteric. John Searle is great in that regard.
i'm shocked Heidegger is not presented in this dialogue. His views of language, ontics, intentionality and transcendence seems to be a viable pathway for directing this conversation
I once asked Searle what he thought about Dreyfus' work and he told me he had been 'ruined by Heidegger'. Then he asked me 'I mean, where is Dasein, in the brain?'. Needless to say, he doesn't seem to give that line of thought a whole lot of thought.
Yeah, that sounds like something he would say. I know Dreyfus and Searle have an ongoing debate about mind and phenomenology. If forced to side, I certainly am in the school of heidegger and merleau-ponty
"if you can get your question right you're well on the way to a solution"... so true

I love Searle. He's so sexy in a 70's kind of way.

@Krelianx Well, I think Searle is an analytic philosopher, so he does not really like continental philosophers.
