So true, but at the same time, as you can see, look how many times that wall broke when someone took the right kind of shot to it. Thank goodness that the end result was Sacks running around, and both drivers ok in general.
That wall saved Sacks's life. That was an absolute head on at no less than a 185-90. Neither one of those cars shed any speed in the real time clip. I've been going to Pocono since the late 80's. Great track with the best fan atmosphere outside of Talladega.
yes that was a boiler plate wall... i used to go to pocono when they had that there... and remember whenever a car hit it at any speed it would break, and they would have to fix it. it seemed even the lightest of taps broke the wall and took 2 hours to fix.
That's amazing. I remember up until 1999, The DuQuoin Mile had a Guardrail around it, but it was a dirt track with the ARCA cars. I wonder if anyone ever went through the metal wall at pocono
I can't remember anyone going over or through the wall at Pocono, but few have tried, both in the NASCAR ranks(Richard Petty in '80,Greg Sacks,Lake Speed in '88) and CART(look up the '83 race on here somewhere)Sacks and Speed punched a big hole in the wall in Turn 1 at Pocono, but they didn't go through it.
Sacks drove some races for Hendrick in 1990. Subbed for D.W. in some, drove a third entry in some others. Had a runner up at Talladega and another at Michigan.
Actually they both did win one Cup race in their careers. Greg won the '85 Firecracker 400 at Daytona, and Lake won the '88 TranSouth 500 at Darlington.
ned jarrett, benny parsons and bob jenkins, best broadcast team ever....neil bonnett was really good too him and benny switched off for a while a couple years after this
I don't know...but the wall giving way there at least spared the drivers from serious injury. And that was long before all this talk about soft walls and stuff like that...they knew what they were doing right from the beginning.
Like this if you chuckled at :05 when the bottom line said USA vs. W. Germany

Very Similar to the Earnhardt-Richmond crash in the same place a few years earlier.

when greg got out of the car and ran, it reminded me of kenny wallace in michigan!

Hell, they used to race trucks at Pocono (Pete, KW, Freightliner, etc.) and they would break the wall in turn 1 all the time

Yeah the now defunct Oswago(sp) Speedway in upper New York a 5/8 mile had the same type of wall.
racefan32 2 years ago
@boxer3087 When did they change from boiler plate to concrete walls?

a car could have easily shot through that wall and go god knows where

Greg Sacks was always a champion at one thing in racing: getting all his sponsors mentioned, LOL.

I can't believe that some dumb ass actually thought that a steel plate wall would contain a car.

definately wouldv'e been fatal had that wall been concrete. probably for both of them
kainethebarbarian 4 years ago 4
Agreed. That wall giving away like that was what probably saved the both of them from having their day seriously messed up more than it already was.
PYLrulz1984 4 years ago 3
they needed to be on a winning team like hendrick rcr or roush racing they would have won i bet
