  • Here go my 5 comments

1.- Far from HORRIBLE it looks like a very interesting ebook

2.- The simple first explanation for new chess players about defending that pawn is OK, and also there are more complex ways of intending the extra pawns defense, but in almost ever case you end up letting it go or sink with it.

3.- Never played Bg4 onthe 4th move... must study it seems ineresting

4.- I would think if Qb3 on the whites 6th move, instead of Nbd7, Qc8 would be better

  • I have owned COW for a couple of years. I only own a couple of ebooks.

This program has dramatically improved my chess. This ebook looks like an excellent addition.

    Enjoyed your video.

  • @jandenny Thanks! It's always nice to hear from someone who has dramatically improved their chess with it.

  • @chessopeningsguy arre u a 40 year old virgin?

  • Excellent video and we need more of this of other openings... thanks

  • I recently puechased the COW Express edition. And this is a nice video demo.

  • Good demo of COW Ebook.

  • Excellent video, clear, straight forward demo on QGA and COW.

  • Haven't played chess in years. I read your email and it whetted my curiousity. Enjoyed the video, maybe I'll find a chess program to download and play a bit. Any suggestopns for a nice **free** program? Keep up the good work.

    Ron Wagner

  • @ronwag1 Hey Ron, I recommend the free version of Chess Openings Wizard, of course. :)

  • Mike,

Excellent video and a good demonstration of COW and its tools in combination with you ever growing library of ebooks. This might be a better way to demonstrate your software's functions in greater depth than the original tutorial videos that came with BookUps and COW. KUDOS and keep up the good work.

  • i WISH THERE WERE MORE EBOOKS BY MIKE HIMSELF

  • Thank you Mike for making that video. The Queen's Gambit is my favorite opening and now I have some more ammunition to use. I am also a COW user, mastering my technique.

  • I have been using Bookup for quite some time now. If you don't have the time to create your e-books then I would recommend trying some of the e-books you can buy it will save you some time. I own Black Is Good 1. e4 c5! which is a repertoire using the Sicilian Defense and the Najdorf Poisoned Pawn Variation As the main line against the 6.Bg5 line. I have created my own e-books for white against the French and against the Sicilian. People have to decide whether they have the time or the money.

  • A nice starightforward demo & sales pitch for Chess Openings Wizard

  • This video is helpful, and it gives a nice plug for the Schulien ebook on the QGA. I am currently using COW and my database to put together a new repertoire to study, and it is very easy. You rock, Mike!

  • As an old Bookup user from way back, it's nice to see more information coming through these videos. Queens Gambit is great. I like the BlackMier Gambit so Im always looking for more info on this opening.

    Thanks Mike

  • Excellent video. Keep them coming!

  • Like many have stated already own COW, I would be interested in the QG as black, since I never open with PQ4.

  • As it happens: 1) I already have COW; its what I use for all my opening training; 2) I don't play the QGA as Black I play the Benko Gambit. Thanks Anyway Mike

  • I am a faitful user of COW. But if I didn't already have it, I would have to buy it. What is the name of the ebook that you listed?

  • I like this video -- it shows the strength of the COW while also putting in a plug for Chuck Schulien's ebook. The QGA is a sound positional opening, good for club level players.

  • Who would like to trade some e books?

  • Good video. Good pitch for the Schulien e-book.

  • Good video

  • I love COW and use it for my preparation every day. I mainly use 1 book for white and two for black and I have surprised higher rated players with my knowledge of certain lines more than once! My goal is to know the first 10 moves in every opening they come up with.

  • Hi Mike,

E-mail arrived same day I decided I needed to review several of my lines in QGA so useful. The e-book sounds interesting but does it cover the line 3.Nf3 a6 which has worked well for me

  • good basic explanation of Chess Opening Wizard and a useful demo of how it keeps track of the moves. I think, in another demo, you should show them how the engine helps sort out the tactics and assesses final positions. The fact that you use Stockfish is Very Impressive... a heck of an engine.

  • nice work mike, i enjoy it, and i hope you 'll make others video, for us chess amateurs

  • Mike, how about a video teaching us how to use COW to make videos like this!

  • nice video, I enjoy it, is excellent and a good training video

    .

  • I don't know what I can add to the comments that have already been made, except I have used this software for years and it really helps, and couldn't be easier to use, just put in the time and your playing will improve.

  • Nice video, Mike. You do have the e-book,yes?

  • Hi Mike, Thank you for the video, very nice and short to watch. I'll have to check your other posts to see if you have any more instructional vids, especially on using BookUp.

  • Mike,

You make a very good teacher! Your avuncular approach makes the use of BookUp seem effortless and intuitive. Good job!

    Regards,

    Gene Vetter [COW Pro]

  • Hey, Mike. Good video, although a bit quick. Of course, the ebooks are self-paced, so I guess it's okay that you rushed a bit.

  • Nice video, although it just scratches the surface on the chess openings wizard functionality. I'm an expert player an use it a lot (especially the training feature) to prepare for my games. About this particular ebook I wonder how old it is, some of Chuck's ebooks are a bit old, not sure if they were reviewed recently.

  • Some of Chuck's ebooks are pretty old, was this one updated recently?

  • Great, well paced and clear instruction on the first few moves of the QGD, and a good illustration of the ease of use and power of bookup. Can we have another one on backsolving?

  • I got sidetracked by SCID but I really should make more use of the excellent Bookup COW software.

  • Thanks Mike

also.. I enjoy C.O.W. very much!

  • Bookup works well on youtube and seems to be a very good tool for deep chess study.

  • Hi- a very good video, especially the bad moves. More instruction should have segments on bad moves to avoid. Thanks for the tips!! Tom

  • Hey Mike! Great video. I always feel like I have learned something when i watch you do videos. It would be so great of you could somehow integrate them into COW. It would be a great way to get started using a new eBook. Watch the video showing you some key points, and taking you down a particular path or two, and then releasing you to the wild to do the same on your own.

  • Mike,

Well paced and enticing so it should draw a broad audience.. First part was monaural, the second was in stereo and clearer. This is an excellent venue for your Bookup videos.

  • Hi, Mike. glad to report I'm operational again This is no doubt a good way to reach young people, & it's well done. hope it brings Bookup lots of new members Dave

  • Chess opening wizard is the best chess learning program! I can so really LEARN chess, not only read annoying chess databases...

  • Anyone interested in learning about chess openings and improving this part of their game should definitely check out Chess Opening Wizard which Mike uses in this video. It is a tremendous program and is only getting better. Hard to believe, perhaps, but in my opinion (Class A) it's better than chessbase or chess assistant for learning openings.

  • Thanks Mike. I enjoy the chess opening wizard program. It is an awesome way to study positions. Better than Fritz on this part of the game because of the easy way to backsolve positions.

  • Thanks Mike. I enjoy Chuck's e-books. His comments are always very clear and instructive.

  • I think this software is the bees knees, I have used this software for well over a year or more now, and I play each opening through as many times as it takes to learn the opening,

Brilliant you can add your own text, and can test out every available move in any given opening, I can not praise this software enough

  • Mike, Nice and clear like always. Keep up the good work.

    Groundling189

  • Who would like to trade some e books?

  • Thanks Mike. One of my favourite openings. and one that I need to do more homework on! The video is nicely put together - I had an issue with the sound for the first part in that the sound only came through the left speaker.

  • Good Job, Mike!

  • Enjoyed your presentation. I normally play e4 instead of e3in response to dxc4 so it was kind of nice to see some of the e3 line.

  • Yes, you are right again the other videos are just bland without the software to evaluate the positions. Bookup/Chess opening wizard is best because of it's heavy annotations, comments and variations are listed in a separate window.

  • It's interesting and I will play it instead of the Nimzo I played against d4.

  • Mike as usual your presentations are well thought thru and right on target. Thanks!

  • As usual an excellent video if sometimes a bit fast especially for those of us who bought COW but do not use it as often as we had the good intentions of doing when we bought it

  • Chess Openings Wizard is a great program.

  • Your video is very instructive. You have a clear and concise way of teaching which makes following the video an enjoyable experience. I downloaded COW a few months ago with the view to training myself up to join a club. However, I had a PC crash and have not been able to relocate the executable file. Is it possible for you to let me download the free version again? Regards.

  • Excellent e-book!

  • I use your chessopenings wizard professional just about every day Mike. It has helped me improve my rating a good deal. A good deal in every way. Thanks for the video

  • Enjoyed your presentation. Only comment. For new chess players, just learning, it may be a bit fast .

  • Well Mike, as usual, you've done a great job. Nice Description and Demo

in six minutes. I enjoy watching you breeze effortlessly through the menus

and tabs as you give your explainations. I never realized how the QGA can

    be such a formidable weapon.

  • An excellent video on both the QGA and on the benefits of using Chess Openings Wizard. The QGA is an excellent opening for club and recreational players and COW offers facilities not offered in any other software to make learning and understanding openings easier. I have been a satisfied customer for a long time.

One thing though, it would be great to have a link to the original video which prompted this one.

  • Chuck's e-book's are pretty good.

  • You make understanding it easy.

  • Great video. I love Chess Openings Wizard and use it all the time. I just wish there were ebooks on more openings. Sure I can make my own, but the professional ones have experts' annotations that really help. Also, make more videos like this!

  • Great video for a great chess software.

    sergio

  • You should make more videos for youtube ... I enjoyed this one Regards Derek

  • Good one Mike. You have certainly been in "the game" a long time. Looks like another interesting ebook for your excellent software.

  • Now I know why I invested in COW Pro, it has provided me with great weapons in the opennings without the trial and many errors I had before. Good video Mike!

  • Great job Mike, like usual. You render openings easy for me to understand

    thanks a lot

  • Mike you are a laster seller. Thanks for keeping me interested in Chess!

  • I respond to ethical bribes. Actually, I did learn something as I am just learning the QG- Thanks!

  • I love it! I usually never try to QGA due to the complications but this video opened my eyes to a new opening. Also, you make the chessopening application seem so easy to use. great job.

  • New to really digging into openings so it's nice to hear someone explain a few main ideas of what the opening is about

  • Focusing on the right moves is the way to go. I agree.

  • how do you have the book in fritz 12

  • @aa27100 Well, the book isn't available in Fritz.

  • really makes things easy to understand

  • @NJCHrisk1954 It is a little fast, although it can be in a YouTube video, since you are able to rewind and watch anything unclear again. Although, subtitles might make it a slightly easer (although not necessary).

  • A little fast for me.

  • A little fast for me.

  • I think this kind of videos could help my son to improve his chess

(and I might improve a bit)

  • While I found the video to be professional and good quality it seemed more about selling the ebook than making an educational video.

  • Good video. Hopefully my comment is a multiple of five! :)

  • I wonder why first part of video have a so low sound (till 1:44min)

  • A nice learning-aid. Easy to understand. It makes me wanna try this opening.

  • Nice bit of history, "If it's good enough for Bobby Fischer it should be good enough for us." :)

  • Presented in a professional, yet in easy to understand, language. Very well done!

  • I like the idea of advising in a positive manner - "what to do" instead of "don't s". Thank you!

  • I like it. There are some good ideas for Queen's gambit accepted. No need to decline it all the time. Even Fischer didn't.

  • way to go mike

  • Mike's a good presenter. Now I want THAT QGA eBook. I taught someone to play the QGA and now I can't seem to equalize against him when I play along and accept it.

  • I guess some useful information but mainly a commercial for Mike's software, but Mike's software is very good.

  • Thanks for sharing that with us Mike - very interesting

  • Goodhhh

  • Goodh

  • Good

  • I use Chess Openings Wizard and recommend it. U learn easy, memorize and understand the positions reading instant comments on each position.

  • Looks like a good and fun way to learn openings without spending a life time to learn them !!!!!!!!!!

  • Very Good information. I think the presentation was well done and it really makes you think ahead.

  • Good video Mike! Love ur work man, and your attitude ;)

  • Nice, interesting and easily understood.

Your presentation style keeps ones interest quite well.

I'll show this to the guys at Tacoma Chess Club (Tacoma, WA)

We'll post some more comments after we view it.

    Thanks

    Lanss

  • Very nice video! i love this software.

  • Thank you for the great video! Awesome job!

  • Thank you for the great video! Awesome job!

  • Good video Mike. For those not already familiar with Chess Openings Wizard you should also know that you can create your own books too. It is a good way to log things that happen in your games online or tournaments. You can run a strong engine to help analyze what to do when you see something unexpected and be ready for the next time you see it.

  • It is always helpful to watch how these resources can be best used. I appreciate the video. Any ebooks coming on the Classical Sicilian or King's Indian from Black's perspective?

  • Comment removed

  • Interesting

  • Great video! I have used this "trap"regularly! Good stuff!

  • nice job mike. I really like your product

  • QGA!? , hmmm - is black given more then one line to play? Definitely a great product.

  • @Conehead1162 Yes, as you probably saw in the video there are a few places where the ebook author gives Black more than one line to choose from.

  • Chess Openings Wizard appears to be a pretty amazing piece of software. Much easier to follow than a paper book of openings and so many positions!

Wouldn't it be great to have this software on a blackberry or an iPhone so you could learn on the move from your pocket? - Now that would be good enough reason to buy an iPhone...

  • @metkhoo We have plans for an iPhone version because I totally agree with you.

  • how much does that ebook cost?

  • @pvcpipe The ebook mentioned in the video is The Closed Game by FM Chuck Schulien. It's $29 from bookup dot com/queensgambit

  • I like this video! I like the the CHESS OPENINGS WIZARD software that I have too! I have this Ebook (CLOSED GAME) and it is great. Great business. Great guy. If we are NOT likely to be chess opponents, try looking at bookup.com

  • A great "teaser", and very short and sweet as an instructional promo. I am an owner and user of your software. After a 30-year hiatus from serious chess, your programs have been a great aid in not just getting me back up to speed, but in making me more comfortable and proficient in the opening phase than I would be had I been playing all these years. If you don't have Mike's software, you don't know what you're missing.

  • @donho57 Thanks, Don! It's hard to believe that I've been making software for chess openings for almost 30 years.

  • Good moves from the black perspective

  • Very instructive quick way to learn or update your knowledge

Plan to watch and use it often.

  • I LOVE the video! I have tried the Chess Openings Wizard software used in this video, and it is extremely helpful in organizing my repetoire. I am keeping my fingers crossed for more YouTube videos like this one analyzing openings.

  • thanks a lot you make opening look easy with the bookup program

  • nice trick. this could save me alot of time mastering openings!!!

  • great video... My goal is to someday be 120 years old and to be able to play a decent game of chess, and I think I would "pass" as a decent chess player if I could actually WIN a game... And what better way to win a game than to get a good position in the opening? Thanks for the great short lesson.

  • Very nice although right now I"m busy with solving problems.Generaly I don't like openings. It seems to me boring part of a game.

  • Very nice program, I would like to have one. It should be very easy to learn openings this way.

  • very nice, i love da video

  • i like it.explains everything and leaves it plain and clear

  • nice move in opening, good!

  • Nice video, I like your presentation of the possibilities of this system. I am not a professional player, but I can see this is very thourough.

  • humm..thats great strategy...

  • Great opening! Will be buying professional soon!

  • good opening we should think and not be in a hurry win on the Queen's Gambit

  • Really cool! I loved the format and will sure try the free software.

  • Very impressive. I'm a beginner who has trouble following books. I need a diagram every move. This format seems to fix that for me. Looking forward to trying this out.

  • nice video i usually just play the same variations over and over, but the ebook makes me wonder if im doing the right variations at all

  • Over 10K positions......I can only memorize 5K....what to do?....haha

  • @hckydude62

Well, if you can only memorize 5,000 just memorize the ones for Black. White's move then take care of themselves, yes? :)

  • @hckydude62 Well... it does have over 10k positions. If you can only memorize 5K of them then I suggest memorizing the ones where Black is to move. White can memorize his own, Yes? :)

  • Isn't chess amazing at all the stuff that cab happen, like was 30 positions. 30 People. Haha but ok keep my amazement to myself.

  • Hey mike, now I thought this was pretty darn good...one of one of the better chess videos...

  • Great video that shows lots of positions. Thanks, Mike.

  • Good. I learned something new again. I like playing black . I need to know more opening sequences and alternatives. Your commentary is clear and that helps too. Thanks for posting.

  • Okay, you sold me on the ebook.. How much is the ebook? For the average chess player this appears to be a good tool add to our tool box.

  • @Motorcycle757 Thanks. The ebook is $29 and it's at bookup.com

  • Well done. Brisque, lively and informative. If you had been adverse to taking the gambit and had that aw-shucks feeling this gives you the opportunity to realize that there are many moves which might seen like a difficult position.

    zebra

  • Nice video Mike!

  • I've actually used this software and it is very good. I had the London opening e book. I've since switched to Backgammon but if I ever got back into Chess than I would use this. Hey Mike, how about a backgammon opening wizard?

  • Nice video Mike. Chess Opening Wizard and Bookup are excellent tools for learning the opening and taking a game into the middlegame. The transposition feature is something you left out that makes move order tricks somewhat outdated. Keep up the good work with your programs and software.

    dave

  • @schlangenbiss1 Thanks, Dave. I cover the transposition feature in another video.

  • I'm always amazed when people try to hang on the pawn and they shock of Qf3.

  • an "ethical bribe" (to place a comment here) is an oxymoron and therefore illogical. I like the playing software used in this video. Which software is it? I don't study or play enough chess to understand any of this video though.

  • @kevlarsen The software is Chess Openings Wizard. It's from bookup.com

  • Comment removed

  • My Brother you are a great teacher of simplicity...GREEEAT VIDEO!!!

Going to save this as a Favorite to come back again for more wisdom.

    Delroy

  • Nice Video. When I play white, I usually play d4. Good to see various options for black.

  • you showed the good the bad and the ugly great video for Gambit

  • i hope my 1/5 chance comes true. =D

  • I've been using Chess Opening Wizard Pro (and it's predecessor Bookup Pro) for a several years. I have found that it it the best way to do Openings Training. I created my own openings books for Birds Opening, Danish Gambit, Budapest Gambit, Grand Prix Attack, Albin Counter Gambit, and Scandi (Nf6). To develop these ebooks, I used Masterchess 7000, along with Roman's Labs DVDs (for Roman's videos, I created pgn's of the games he annotates in his videos and imported them. Backsolving Rules!

    Ron

  • Really good information. Definitely helps to know the right moves to make, rather than focusing on moves NOT to make

  • @orenanyachi I agree. Focusing on the right moves will take you so much further than focusing on the moves not to make.
