Great video but if you need to remove and replace your old bathtub drain then the EzXtractor tool is a must. Its fast and easy just a few minutes and the job is done
@TheAppleballGuys Same here, my central shaft hasn't budged after I attempted to remove it and the stopper using a slotted screwdriver by placing the bit of screwdriver into the square hole at the top of central shaft.
@domelessness - One of two things. First, if you removed the top center knob and the center shaft will not turn with a screwdriver, pour some white vinegar on the shaft and let it sit for a few minutes. It is possible that there is sediment build-up and the vinegar will eat through or soften the sediment enough to turn the shaft.
@domelessness - The other possibility is that your particular stopper has a set screw on the shaft. It is a bit difficult to locate. Lift the stopper as far as possible and shine a flashlight between the drain and bottom of the stopper. Look for a small Allen head or Phillips-head screw on the shaft. Loosen the screw and pull the stopper out. You don't need to remove the screw, just loosen it. Use a magnetic screwdriver to avoid accidentally dropping the screw down the drain.
Thank you! Mine didn't come off exactly like yours. I got frustrated and grabbed some pliers to twist with. Then the entire piece untwisted and came out. But I was attempting to twist off the top.
Trying to figure out what the point is in that drain thingy anyway...I pulled out gum, a silly band, misc. gunk and a ginormous wad of ???!!
I'm throwing mine out and going back to the old fashioned rubber stopper kind!
Some of you may not have this exact type of stopper although it may look like the one in this video. If this is the case, check out the YouTube video by dtrebacz: "How to remove Moen popup bathtub drain stopper" I can't post the link unfortunately.
Thank you for your post. It was really helpful to get my stopper off. My house is a newer house and the stopper did not look look a screw at all once i got the top screw off. I put a screw driver in there and gave it a little elbow grease and i turned counter clockwise and i came right out. Your a god send. I can thank you enough.I was able to retrieve an important item that went down the drain.
Thank you so much for this video! After pouring Drano every few months with decreasing effectiveness, I decided to do some manual hair removal. I saw this video and followed the instructions. A few minutes later my water was draining fast and all without chemicals. Bless you good sir and bless the internet!
Just want to share this for anyone having a similar issue. Mine didn't have any screws when the top is off.. it just had a flat tip in there which confused the heck out of me. Later, after days of research I found somewhere that you just have to lift the stopper like 1/8th of an inch and turn anti-clockwise.. just turn with some force(i used my hands) and voila, its coming out.. thats it... clean your dirt and water flows merrily. Hope this helps someone like it did for me.
Thank you so much for putting up this video! It only took me a minute to get my drain cleared of hair and saved me about $12 for a bottle of Liquid Plumber, which is pretty useless anyway.
Thank you. I had to almost force the second part to come off with the screw driver. I was worried I might be forcing to hard but then it gave and came right undone.
Never again will my long hair make my bath tub clogged!
Mine doesn't have it either. I noticed in the vid that he did not have to turn his for it to stay up, therefore, is his the the lift and turn type? Mine will not stay up without turning it. There is no sloted screw head under the knob, just the threads for the knob and a flat piece of metal at the bottom.
Thank you so much for this video. It worked PERFECTLY. I had to use a rag to remove the top screw since it was tight, then found the screw, removed the stopper and found ALL of the junk that had accumulated in my girls tub. LOL.

i hate these stoppers. i got mine off by unscrewing it counter-clockwise, without taking the knob off. no wonder i can't figure out how to get it off the second time. i guess you're not supposed to do it the way i did.
Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Thank you!!!! Thank you!!! Why did my maintanence folks say I'd have to get a plumber! Hmph! That heavens for Youtube/Internet!
Okay, so my stopper is a lift and turn but it has a screw on the of the little knob (I didn't loosen it) when I turned it it wouldn't turn very easily and while turning it I couldn't open/ lift it up at all, so atm it is in the original position. Did I need to loosen the screw? Did I not turn it enough? What do you think I should do?
I agree, mine was so tight, I couldn't use my fingers, so the channel locks were very helpful to me. however, our tip about it not needing to be open helped because i was able to get the bottom piece off better with it closed.
Thank you so much for this video! I had to do mine a tad different, but it helped me realize I could get the drain off and clean it without spending any money! Thanks again!
On mine, when you remove the little screw off knob on top there is just a flat piece of metal in the hole- it cannot be removed with a screwdriver, i suspect that why the other guy is using channel lock pliers. I couldn't get mine out.
I have no slot for a screw driver under my top cap. It is just a stub under it and it's to far down to grab with needle nose pliers. Looks the same but must be a different type. Any ideas?
@FatWagar The knob may have sediment build-up. Brush a liberal amount of apple cider vinegar where the bottom of the knob meets the top of the stopper. Let it soak for a bit, place a wash cloth over the knob, and then slowly twist off with a apir of pliers. You can also place the stopper in the down position, and fill the tub with hot water until the water covers the stopper. This will sometimes loosen the knob as well.
@FatWagar - The other possibility is that your particular stopper has a set screw on the shaft. It is a bit difficult to locate. Lift the stopper as far as possible and shine a flashlight between the drain and bottom of the stopper. Look for a small Allen head or Phillips-head screw on the shaft.
