Overstocked breeders of pleasure breeds use slaughterhouses. 80% of horses that go to slaughter are from the pleasure/hack industry. Thoroughbreds that are neglected or starved usually suffer this fate AFTER they leave the racing industry, given to ppl who claim to provide an excellent home, and are 'pony club professionals' (idiots). As a part of the horse racing industry, and having been a part of it my entire life, along with family and my boyfriend this video is an INSULT to us, to our careers, and to our horses. Most of the horses that end up in slaughter houses are BACKYARD BRED ANIMALS THAT are neglected by their owners not RACEHORSES. Our horses are able to race until age 14 and if they don't make it that far they are either kept with us or given to a GOOD home, one which has been SCREENED.

I have just finished working in the race industry for this very reason it is a harsh reality that this is what actuallay happens. Horses are pushed till they can t go anymore and then spelled (the good ones) patched back up then sent in again. this happens till they physical can not stand up to the work. Most horses that have raced have great damage to there joints.I could go one but it makes me sick.

They may even be kept for emotional reasons by owners and live as a pleasure horse or even lawn ornaments. But yes a number of them do get sent to slaughter but its not like a big truck roles up to the training barn an shouts 'bring out ur dead' they change hands many times before there sent to lesser. The racing industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that inst about to stop b/c a few people stuck a few pictures & videos together of some horses being abused or getting injured. Race horses are one of the most looked after domesticated animals on earth, & once they have retired from racing,they are usually given away or sold to be used as pony club mounts, hacks & show horses.A lot of people I know, myself included have ex-racehorses & there the best horses to own.
My father is works at an equine vets that often deal with racehorses and racehorse injuries, but nothing compares to the state he sees the majority of home owned horses who are used a ponies and eventers.

Horse racing is cruel, any sort of racing be it with a human body to animal is hard and cruel against it. There are only few that people will actually care and love the animals, the rest are just left away to die. How about for those instead of saying it's not cruel, why not stop racing your horse and love them for them and be their friend, owner, the one they trust instead of leaving them to die.

This video is true. Most people do send ex-racers to slaughter. But that is only if the horse did not get famous. Like, Affirmed. Did he get sent to slaughter? No, because he was famous. Although I will admit that it is more common in jumping. If the horse misses a jump, they are sent to slaughter. It is not very common is racing.

As a member of the racing industry, and having lived around them my whole life i can safely say that this video could not be further from the truth it has been made up of clips featuring some horses which werent even throughbreds(race horses) and to have the gr8est sport in the world insulted like this is disgraceful.

Okay first of all i have my 6 race horses out for lots of fun every day. Only on cold nights do they sleep in stalls. otherwise i put them out in my round pen for the night. I work on the racetrack galloping racehorses. Most of the people that work on the backside think like I do about these horses. We get attached to them and we have a scence of love for them. We don't like to see this side of the racing industry but in any sport where there is day after day of vigourous training there will be injuries. There are injuries in EVERY sport you can think of. I am not saying that this doesn't break my heart to watch this video

All true. ive got an ex racer and anyone who knows anything about horses can tell he's never been loved. He was just an accessory. He has horrendous whip scars from an overenthusiastic jockey and whenever he does something wrong he shys away because at some point someones obviously hit him when he's done something wrong. His only past owners raced him so thats the only reason he could be like he is. It took me 4 months to get him calm enough to hack out. Racing destroyed him.

you are correct i know someone who was a race horse trainer she currently has 4 of her ex-racers all dressage and jumper mounts now while they where not made for the racing industry they have done great in their secondary carriers. while some trainers are crazy with whips not all. all of her horses on the track where worked on the track for 30min daily handwalked for hourse swam ect. and groomed constantly .

i have experience behind the scenes - boy i wish i could tell you more. i have a lot of experience with racehorses - its for that reason i turned against it.
I have lived next to a trainer and have family involved in racing. Most (not all) of what this video refered to is true. While the horse are in training and racing they are generally well treated but when not useful anymore a lot if not most are sent to sale yards and slaughter. I have seen that with my own eyes having frequented saleyards and knackeries. There is only a fraction of foals bred that end up with trainers or homed for other uses.

icancanter, it seems as if you have NO experience in real horse racing. i have been working with 20-some head of racing thoroughbreds, and they are all the most passionate animals i've ever met. horses love to race and compete, you'll find that with any horse athlete. racing greats all had that desire and passion to win. i've never seen ANY abuse on the track OR backbarns. and humans do NOT race for pride. they race for the thrill and passion of the sport.

I am not an expert on horseracing. In this country horse racing is nearly dead anyway, and attracts little attention beyond the gambling aspect. Which NOT a good thing for the horses, if the public doesn't know and doesn't care.

there are positives of riding disciplines...what are you talking about. If a horse didnt love there job you would know, sure some push there horse regardless but if my horse didnt want to jump a 3ft jump she would refuse and throw me off but she loves to do it because we are both become relaxed and happy. In Australia where the video was made, racehorses have a brand so they are easily recognisable. Watch closely and you will see the horses in the video are all branded. I've been to the saleyards where many racehorses are sold. Three quarters are sold for dog meat. Want the proof and I'll send it to you. Horseracing stinks and anyone involved in it is complicit.

with any equine sport there comes the bad along with the good. Accidents are apart of life you cant change that. I would be bothered to see any animal killed, but honestly you can only save so many there is just know where else for them to go. This is so wrong I am discusted, I have worked with race horses for years and have owned many once retired. Racing like any other sport has its dangers but these horses are loved well looked after during their racing years and a majority do get re-educated and sent to loving homes to carry on living wonderful lives, just ask my 2.
This is an absolute outrage. I am tired of people making gross assumptions on something they know nothing about. Breeders and owners spend millions of dollars on these horses, give them the best care possible, they LOVE their horses. Most horses retire to be bred and live out their lives at beautiful horse farms, very well taken care of. I love this sport, these horses were bred to run and they love it.
Please ban this vid, most ex racers are put up to bred and to be retrained as jumpers, or to farms where they live out the rest of their lives, in good care, helping children learn how to ride and take care of horses.

Alot of ex racehorses are used for breeding, the better stallions attracting big fees. Alot of mares are also used. Alot of ex racehorses are put into training programs to be put back into society. Pony clubs and equestrians use them.

Eventing horses fall and injure themselves, sometimes fatally. Show horses are stabled all day. Overstocked breeders of pleasure breeds use slaughterhouses. 80% of horses that go to slaughter are from the pleasure/hack industry. As a part of the horse racing industry, and having been a part of it my entire life, along with family and my boyfriend this video is an INSULT to us, to our careers, and to our horses. Most of the horses that end up in slaughter houses are BACKYARD BRED ANIMALS THAT are neglected by their owners not RACEHORSES. Our horses are able to race until age 14 and if they don't make it that far they are either kept with us or given to a GOOD home, one which has been SCREENED.

Horses are meant to run - its in their nature.
Not all racehorses are sent to the doggers - many trainers try to find out new homes but unable to due to people not wanting a horse straight off the track.
Thats when the doggers come in - they have a job to do.
I dont like the slaughter of horses either but in this current society we, as in the whole world, cannnot stop cruetly to animals until we stop it on ourselves.

I have just finished working in the race industry for this very reason it is a harsh reality that this is what actuallay happens. Horses are pushed till they can t go anymore and then spelled (the good ones) patched back up then sent in again. this happens till they physical can not stand up to the work. Most horses that have raced have great damage to there joints.I could go one but it makes me sick.

Thats the best piece of propaganda Iv ever seen. Reality is that a good majority of racehorses go on to new careers or rescues groups. They may even be kept for emotional reasons by owners and live as a pleasure horse or even lawn ornaments. But yes a number of them do get sent to slaughter but its not like a big truck roles up to the training barn an shouts 'bring out ur dead' they change hands many times before there sent to lesser. Slaughter is a far reaching problem on restricted to racing.

The racing industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that inst about to stop b/c a few people stuck a few pictures & videos together of some horses being abused or getting injured. Race horses are one of the most looked after domesticated animals on earth, & once they have retired from racing,they are usually given away or sold to be used as pony club mounts, hacks & show horses.A lot of people I know, myself included have ex-racehorses & there the best horses to own.

This video is true. Most people do send ex-racers to slaughter. But that is only if the horse did not get famous. Like, Affirmed. Did he get sent to slaughter? No, because he was famous. Although I will admit that it is more common in jumping. If the horse misses a jump, they are sent to slaughter. It is not very common is racing.

I work on the racetrack galloping racehorses. Most of the people that work on the backside think like I do about these horses. We get attached to them and we have a scence of love for them. We don't like to see this side of the racing industry but in any sport where there is day after day of vigourous training there will be injuries. There are injuries in EVERY sport you can think of. I start work at 4:30 in the morning and dont leave sometimes until after every horse is done eating and settled in for the night. All true. ive got an ex racer and anyone who knows anything about horses can tell he's never been loved. He was just an accessory. He has horrendous whip scars from an overenthusiastic jockey and whenever he does something wrong he shys away because at some point someones obviously hit him when he's done something wrong. His only past owners raced him so thats the only reason he could be like he is. It took me 4 months to get him calm enough to hack out. Racing destroyed him.

Ok hunny. First of all the last minute had nothing to do with racehorses. Plus, a lot of the horses who do end up in the slaughter house are dangerous to the public and permently like that. Slaughter is their best option. Most ex-racehorses get a new job as pony horses or used for a lot of different disaplines. Try going back into the barns and seeing them, being spoiled. you are correct i know someone who was a race horse trainer she currently has 4 of her ex-racers all dressage and jumper mounts now while they where not made for the racing industry they have done great in their secondary carriers. while some trainers are crazy with whips not all. all of her horses on the track where worked on the track for 30min daily handwalked for hourse swam ect. and groomed constantly .

oh excuse me while I LOL. I have over 20 years experience re-educating ex-racehorses, as well as teaching and training in a variety of equine disciplines. I have far more understanding of equine psychology than most people who will see this video. The fact of the matter is "competitiveness" in the sense of winning a race is an anthropomorphism: horses don't "compete" the way humans compete.

What a load of rubbish you have put in your video! Most ex racers here are rehomed and go onto another discipline! They only spend a lot of time in the box when the are in 'training'so out of 12months they get 6 months at grass! I have lived next to a trainer and have family involved in racing. Most (not all) of what this video refered to is true. While the horse are in training and racing they are generally well treated but when not useful anymore a lot if not most are sent to sale yards and slaughter. I have seen that with my own eyes having frequented saleyards and knackeries. There is only a fraction of foals bred that end up with trainers or homed for other uses.

icancanter, it seems as if you have NO experience in real horse racing. i have been working with 20-some head of racing thoroughbreds, and they are all the most passionate animals i've ever met. horses love to race and compete, you'll find that with any horse athlete. racing greats all had that desire and passion to win. i've never seen ANY abuse on the track OR backbarns. and humans do NOT race for pride. they race for the thrill and passion of the sport.

You don't think horses love to run? They're not competitive? Watch Invasor in the Donn hcp. At the top of the stretch he is behind a wall of horses and looking left and right for a space to go through he practically climbs over them while his jockey tries to restrain him.

I am not an expert on horseracing. In this country horse racing is nearly dead anyway, and attracts little attention beyond the gambling aspect. Which NOT a good thing for the horses, if the public doesn't know and doesn't care.
And all I can say about the slaughter houses is that slaughter houses are places of death and misery for all the species that end up there, not just horses.

there are positives of riding disciplines...what are you talking about. If a horse didnt love there job you would know, sure some push there horse regardless but if my horse didnt want to jump a 3ft jump she would refuse and throw me off but she loves to do it because we are both become relaxed and happy. There is positiveness, there are tons of people who do try and make a difference by trying to help these horses...w/e

In Australia where the video was made, racehorses have a brand so they are easily recognisable. Watch closely and you will see the horses in the video are all branded. I've been to the saleyards where many racehorses are sold. Three quarters are sold for dog meat. Want the proof and I'll send it to you. Horseracing stinks and anyone involved in it is complicit.

with any equine sport there comes the bad along with the good. Accidents are apart of life you cant change that. I would be bothered to see any animal killed, but honestly you can only save so many there is just know where else for them to go. The racing industry may have some people who are cruel or w/e but most are not. This video does not make me want to ban racing, you have only shown the extreme of one side and disregarded the positiveness.

why would you say that this video was made to prove a point and the part where it said racehorses stay in a stall for up to 22 hours a day is true my uncle owns a bunch of racers they only get a hour in the paddock 30 mins on the hot walker a 15 min swim and a 15 min bath thats all they get so it makes sense why all these accidents happen becasue they arent excersied enough to keep their legs in shape to run in races this video wasnt made because some1 lost a bet

This is so wrong I am discusted, I have worked with race horses for years and have owned many once retired. Racing like any other sport has its dangers but these horses are loved well looked after during their racing years and a majority do get re-educated and sent to loving homes to carry on living wonderful lives, just ask my 2.

This is an absolute outrage. I am tired of people making gross assumptions on something they know nothing about. Breeders and owners spend millions of dollars on these horses, give them the best care possible, they LOVE their horses. Most horses retire to be bred and live out their lives at beautiful horse farms, very well taken care of. I love this sport, these horses were bred to run and they love it.

also the horses sold to knackery why dont you just get over it there is no other home for them, the same way dogs are put down at the pound, the same way we kill animals for meat to eat - go make a video on that dum fucker- you have no idea about horse racing. Alot of ex racehorses are used for breeding, the better stallions attracting big fees. Alot of mares are also used. Alot of ex racehorses are put into training programs to be put back into society. Pony clubs and equestrians use them.
