  • not to sound like an idiot in that comment btw.

  • cus would never put him in the ring with marciano, secondly patterson never had a weak jaw.. he was just really scared of sonny liston in pattersons second comming in the late 60's early 70's he went through wars his fight with george chuvalo is a testament to how much of a decent jaw he had.

  • I'd love you to do a video on Sonny Liston. I'd like to know your thoughts on him. Thanks.

  • FLOYD PATTERSON MOVIE !

  • to add to my other comment i posted on this video....this reminds me of the patterson v ellis fight...he put the badly beaten ellis down in the 14th, and like you say helps him up...he didnt get credited with the knockdown, afterwards he was badly robbed {in most peoples eyes} of winning a title for the third time in that fight....i have a great photo i must show you of him not complaining with the decision...i also have a photo with me and him in 95 i'd like to show you.

  • Floyd had some good fights after he lost to Liston and Ali. He was doing pretty good for a while too until he lost his rematch with Ali in 72. That fight was stopped on cuts.

  • patterson was a great legend thats why i loaded him on my fight night round 4 game on ps 3 lol even though he was like 180 or 188 i put him 208 on the game cause he would have to be atleast around that weight to hang in there with the bigger heavyweights like ali, foreman, lewis, and the klitshckos

  • very interesting video.

  • @wukillah92 Thanks for the comment. There is a little bit of Floyd Patterson in all of us.

  • Looking back I remember reading Floyd's book

"Victory Over Myself". No contest, Floyd was more than an Olympic champion and the two-time heavyweight

champion. He was a class act inside the ring

and in the everyday life where he helped others.

  • Good video! Floyd was a great champion and human being

  • Floyd Patterson was a wonderful man. He became a Roman Catholic Deacon in the 1980s-

He was such a gentleman and a great champion.

I admired him so much. Just a gentleman's gentleman.

    Rest In Peace, Floyd-

    God Bless you

  • The 8 rounder you refer to was Floyd Patterson defeating Esau Ferdinand Oct. ll, 1954 in NYC.

Alas, I was only a spectator.

  • i got to spend a little time with patterson in 95 {?} when he was in dublin for a lennox lewis fight...a very un-asuming almost shy man..a great honour for me to meet him and speak with him...

you said you fought an 8 rounder...thats a good level...tell us more about your career...

also...do you have any memories of charley burley ??

  • not taking enything away from patterson he was a great boxer and a great champion. thanks for sharing that with us.

  • I think that quick KO's by Liston revealed the truth about Patterson.

  • patterson had a glass jaw! he also had weak punching, when marciano retierd patterson was a light heavy weight THEN he moved up. patterson whent down WAY down with Ingemar Johansson, and was brutilized by mr. liston. marciano had power, stamina, and a great condition fighter with a "fair" defence. if liston could cacth floyd in R1, then marciano would cacth floyd no later than 3.

  • thanks for that old timer.

  • Patterson & Sonny Liston met in Sept 1962. Liston became world champion knocking out Patterson in the first round. Patterson & Liston signed for a rematch, held in July 1963. This fight lasted two seconds longer than their first fight, with Liston once again knocking out Patterson in the first round. A reporter interviewing Patterson, who I think may have been Howard Cossell, said You dont have to run away and hide like you did after the first fight. You have nothing to be embarrassed about.

  • octogenerian, thanks for your reminiscences. I enjoyed hearing you talk about Floyd. I remember a couple of things. Many in the press assumed that light heavyweight champ Archie Moore would become the heavyweight champion after Marciano retired. Moore was a terrific fighter, but as you said, Patterson knocked him out. Also during Patterson's reign as the heavyweight champ, for some strange reason he was lightly regarded by much of the press. Were they comparing him to Marciano and Joe Lewis?

  • Floyd will always be remembered by boxing fans, casual fans dont know about henry armstrong, beau jack, charlie burley, ezzard charles or many other great fighters. But Floyd is the youngest undisputed heavyweight champ of the world, tyson might of won the belt at 20, but he didnt have all 3.

  • Floyd like you said was an utter gentleman, we can all learn sometihng from this great champion. What i most admire aobut flotd in the ring was the rematch with johansson after being knocked down 7 times in the first fight and was amde to look like an amatuer, he took the rematch straight away and came back and learnt everything thats where the phrase "you learn more in defeat than you would in victory " originated as he scored an amazing 5th round ko what a fighter!

  • Thank you but God I hope that you could speak FASTER...

  • Interesting comment. Thank you.

  • Re Floyd's chin. He did get knocked down a lot, but he also got up a lot, and more often than not climbed off the canvas to win. Only Liston genuinely KO'd him. Against Ali and Ingo he was on his feet when the fight was stopped. Liston would knock out anyone he could hit cleanly. Ingo, for all his faults, did have a hard punch and Floyd twice avenged that one by KO; and Ali was a lot bigger and at his absolute peak when they fought.

  • Yaw heard of Alvin Williams he my Granpa he fought Floyd For the Belt

  • Interesting stuff, thanks.

  • Thank you sir for your memories. Much appreciated. Kym

  • My greatest recollection was when Floyd regained the title from Johansson. Listening on the radio, I remember my apprehension everytime Ingo through a punch expecting to hear "Floyd's down!". I loved Floyd as a kid, but in retrospect, it's hard to overlook the championship years, ducking Zora Folley, Eddie Machen, etc. It's interesting that he had his most notable victories post championship against Machen, Bonavena, Chuvalo and was robbed against Jimmy Ellis. Thanks for the memories.

  • Oh no octo thanks for bringing up the bitter memories of seeing my hero Archie Moore getting toppled by Patterson. What an amazing hook that was. But the saddest I've ever been to see one so good. Archie moore what a bizarre yet amazig person and boxer.

  • Patterson's chin was too weak, and Marciano's was granite - I see Marciano grinding one out by stoppage in the mid-to-late rounds, though he might hit the canvas once or twice on the way.

  • Thanks for the 1st comment on this video and for the interesting comment of a few days ago.

  • You're quite welcome. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on some of the more modern boxers (from the 70s up through the present), especially any that you saw live. I'm a very big fan of Arguello and Hearns, in respect to more recent boxers of yesteryear.

  • @Tengoshi i disagree when Patterson came along Marciano was the old lion,Patterson was the young lion. Patterson's young legs would have been too much for the aging Rocky. All fighters face the day when their legs fail them. Father time would have have beaten the Rock more than Patterson. Rocky was great, but also human.
